Why VLSI Design• The opportunity in VLSI (Electronics Design) are increasing exponentially

• India currently constitutes only about 0.5 % of the total VLSI business

• Around 120 companies being operational in India

• Market needed specialized VLSI Engineers by providing them the requisite real time design tools employed for electronics Design

• Last year we produced 10,000 technical professionals against a requirement of 50,000 (Ministry of Information Technology), the demand for VLSI Engineers far exceeds the supply

• Major Silicon Design companies are reducing their headcount in North America/Europe and increasing it in India

Objectives of the Project

• To deploy “IMAGE VLSI and Embedded System Laboratory” infrastructure in Mizoram University.

• To deliver educational content to the students using distance learning facilities provided by Centre for Distance Engineering Education Program (CDEEP), IIT Bombay.

• To produce qualified VLSI & Embedded professionals and faculty.

Page 7: Presented by N. P. Maity Assistant Professor & Head

Methodology• Setting up of the basic infrastructure called “IMAGE VLSI and Embedded System

Laboratory” in Mizoram University. This global standard infrastructure will make our Laboratory at par with IITs and international universities.

• Perpetual licensing of all software tools having onsite support

• Training of the Teachers in the educational contents in the area of VLSI Design & Embedded system at the Remote Centre

• Training of the students, at the Remote Centre, in the educational contents in the area of VLSI Design & Embedded system including Hardware Description Languages, Simulation and synthesis, and the use of FPGAs

• Streaming video interface to the Internet for delivery of the courses designed by the

Centre for Distance Engineering Education Program (CDEEP), IIT Bombay

• Establishing web interface to the software tools with adequate network connectivity

Page 8: Presented by N. P. Maity Assistant Professor & Head

Content Delivery for Teacher Training & Students

• To train the teachers at the remote centers, CDEEP will deliver course content in the area of VLSI Design and Embedded Systems to the remote centers by means of regular onsite visits by certified personnel

• It will include the provision of training on CAD tools, assistance in course homework and assignments, coordination between the remote centre and course instructor at IIT Bombay

• A series of online laboratory courses in HDL, Simulation and Synthesis

• The Use of FPGAs

Suggested Courses for Training students & teachers

• VLSI System Design

• VLSI Circuit Design

• Hardware Description Languages

• Embedded Systems

• Computer Systems

• VLSI Design Lab

• Modern Electronics Design Techniques

• Digital Circuit Lab

• Foundation of VLSI

• Basic Electronics

Justifications for having VLSI Laboratory in Mizoram University

• Remoteness of the place: Mizoram is remotely located. This will provide great

opportunity for our students to be in sync with the latest in the global job market.

• Poor infrastructure: For Engineering & Technology Education in the state;

it will enable latest technology infrastructure at our University

• Inadequate Faculty: In spite of the availability of teaching positions,

university is unable to recruit qualified faculty. We can tap IIT Bombay faculty

run courses to build skills for our faculty as well as enable our students to

benefit directly from the IIT courses.

Page 17: Presented by N. P. Maity Assistant Professor & Head

At a Glance

• Provide scope for students to carry out projects

• Provide scope for teachers to initiate research in this technology

• Greater job opportunities for the products of the University

• It is evident therefore that the University is developing one and is remotely

located. It needs IIT Bombay’s CDEEP support and IIT Bombay par

Laboratory Infrastructure to become world-class.
