Religion

“Religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of life and the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a supernatural agency”.

What sociology says about Religion

“The word religion is the matter of faith or belief system, based on conviction rather scientific

evidence.” Religion differs from private belief in that it has

a public aspect. Most religions have organized behaviors, including congregations for prayer, priestly hierarchies, holy places, and scriptures.

Many religions have narratives, symbols, traditions and sacred histories that are intended to give meaning to life.

They tend to derive morality, ethics, religious laws or a preferred lifestyle from their ideas about the cosmos and human nature.

Academics studying the subject have divided religions into three broad categories.

Christianity

Christians believe that God is the creator of all people, the world, the universe, and everything seen and unseen.

They believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

They believe that Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit of God and born through the Virgin Mary.

Virtually all Hindus believe in: The three-in-one god known as

“Brahman,” which is composed of: Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the Preserver), and Shiva (the Destroyer).

The Caste System. Reincarnation.  Also known as “transmigration

of souls,” or “samsara.”  This is a journey on the “circle of life,” where each person experiences as series of physical births, deaths, and rebirths.  With good karma, a person can be reborn into a higher caste, or even to godhood.  Bad karma can relegate one to a lower caste, or even to life as an animal in their next life.

Nirvana.  This is the goal of the Hindu.  Nirvana is the release of the soul from the seemingly endless cycle of rebirths. 

They believe that when they use to burn their dead bodies then there will we no punishment given to them.

Muslims believe that God is one and incomparable.

Muslims also believe that Islam is the complete and universal version of a primordial faith that was revealed at many times and places before, including through the prophets Abraham, Moses and Jesus.

Muslims maintain that previous messages and revelations have been partially changed or corrupted over time, but consider the Quran to be both unaltered and the final revelation from God.

Judaism

Judaism, the first and oldest of the three great monotheistic faiths, is the religion and way of life of the Jewish people. The basic laws and tenets of Judaism are derived from the Torah, the first five books of the Bible.

Judaism believes that the world was created by a single, all-knowing divinity, and that all things within that world were designed to have meaning and purpose as part of a divine order.

Judaism does have a concept of reward and punishment in the afterlife.

Three Branches of Judaism

When someone dies, the disembodied soul leaves this sensory world and enters “Gan Eden,” the spiritual Garden of Eden (a.k.a. “Heaven”).

These are the three branches of Judaism which form the framework for the type of lifestyle and beliefs of Jewish individuals:
