How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Page 2: Presentation2

My group and I wanted to make sure that through our main product and ancillary texts there were clear links, and that our target audience could realise that they were all for the same product. To achieve this was very important because it is another selling point that is commonly used in media where you need your target audience to be hypnotise by their own curiosity to gain more knowledge on the product that you want to sell. For instance the way my group and I have used persuasion for our audience to want to find out more background knowledge on the 'I Will Sin’ film and when it’s to be released to have an interesting main image for our promotional poster, but to have the image with our audience left with curiosity. We also made this effect through our trailer by touching people’s emotions through making them feel uncomfortable or unsettled through the atmosphere that we portrayed throughout the trailer. The magazine cover also plays a very big part in our unique selling point because if our target audience see the trailer and poster they will be eager for more information on the film.

I feel that we have achieved this through our magazine cover and poster and it is clear to our target audience that there’s a correlation between both ancillary texts through the main images which are very similar even though there are some differences. The use of font for the title ‘I Will Sin’ and the images that are shown on the bottom page of the magazine cover.

From the beginning of the year we have researched into horror conventions and what needs to consist in a horror trailer, poster and magazine cover. I feel that we have kept to the horror conventions but also went against them to have a main unique selling point; which I feel makes our trailer different from existing ones. Our final product and ancillary texts are all very strong and effective in drawing our audience in to see ‘I Will Sin’. I feel that using different promotional tools and ways of media has helped me to achieve this.

On the next slide you can see that we have kept to some of the conventions used in horror genre posters.

Our poster An existing poster

Both font for titles are simple yet effective.

Both character’s faces are shadowed out to keep some mystery.

Blood is common on horror genre posters.

As all horror posters both have the release date of the film.

What makes are poster unique and oppositional is the month that we chose to release our trailer. The reason why we wanted to have the release date set in June is so that it gives our target audience something to look forward to whilst they’re finishing their exams. We also didn’t want our film to be a cliché ; meaning having it released at Halloween or around winter time. I also thought that it would be a good idea for the film to come out in June so that there's less competition for horror films, making more people interested in seeing our film.

Challenging horror conventions for posters

When my group and I needed audience feedback we chose to upload our trailer, poster and magazine on Facebook and also add our trailer to YouTube. I found that since these were both world wide network sites they would help us to get feed back from our target audience. However, these sites would also help to be a promotional tool for the trailer, where our audience could get information on updates on the film and also watch the trailer on YouTube and also see off set action or interviews with the actors in the film.

Overall I feel that our main product and ancillary texts have been very effective and that all really compliment each other. I think that they all interlink and each one of our productions persuade our target audience to see the film. The use of the powerful image used in the poster and magazine are both effective and make it clear to the audience that they are part of the same project.
