Age

For our opening sequence we chose to aim at the higher end of the teenage bracket of about 15-18. We chose this age group as we also fall into the same category. After conducting research we discovered that teenagers loved horror/thriller genres. Also the characters that were present in the opening sequence fall into the social group of teenagers and therefore being an ideal audience for our opening sequence.

Gender

In terms of a target genre for our product, we did not have one as we knew that the horror/thriller genre is significant with both genders and so we thought that it would be right to make a product suitable for male and females. Also, because the characters that were in our opening sequence were male and female we decided to make it gender applicable.

Social Demographic

The social demographic we are aiming at is those within the D-E categories, this is the unemployed/students as most commonly they are teenagers. However some possibly from categories C1- C2 as these are working class people and due to the narrative enigma and plot twists may be seen less challenging to understand is someone is from a higher social demographic category.

Similar Films

After watching many films of a similar genre and storylinewe discovered teenagers watched films of this genre mostoften. Also from the uses of gratifications theory of entertainment where teenagers love watching films as they are entertaining. Films under the horror/thriller genre provide the second most entertainment alongside comedy.

Importance of a target audience

It was very important for our group to have a target audience so we can make sure that our product is convincing enough due to feedback from peers. This is to ensure that the audience can also understand what is going on in the opening sequence, however narrative enigmas are used in order to make the audience question what is going on thus creating a more engaged audience.

Theory

For our opening sequence product we thought about our audience types, these come under Young and Rubicams audience type theory.

We believe that ‘The explorer’ would be one of our audience types as these people are ones that are often ones to try out new things and our opening sequence would be perfect as it is something that is slightly different from some real products today. For example, the swap of gender roles and thus creating a female clown. This would be a good audience type as they respond to products that are different meaning that we could have a successful product.

The other audience type would be ‘The mainstreamers’ as they look for very cliché products and our opening sequence provides those cliché, conventional feature of a horror meaning that they are more likely to enjoy our product, such as blood
