Introduction

My magazine is primarily targeted at teenagers and young adults, mainly because of it “pop” genre. This is the reason that the codes and conventions that I have used on the front cover of my music magazine are different then that of any other music magazine. But the question that arises is that how did I attract/address my target audience through the usage of these conventions !

Mast Head

Starting off with the Mast Head. Firstly the mast head is centralized and the font of the mast head is bigger compared to other written matter on the cover page to make it more prominent. A difference in font is another contributing factor to what makes the mast head stand out. But the most important thing is the color of the mast head, red. Red is a very attractive color which is why I have used it for the mast head to attract and address a larger audience. And a fact that the mast head of the cover page goes behind the main image, showing sign of professionalism, may also contribute to the audience attraction. Which is why I think that my target audience (young adults) will find the magazine appealing and will eventually buy it.

Main Image

The main image of my magazine is the main attention grabber and one of the most important convention of a music magazine that attracts/addresses my target audience. The main reason is that the models on the cover page fall under the same category as the target audience for my magazine, and that the “style” of the models is very modern, so naturally the target audience (young adults) are persuaded to buy the magazine. Secondly the direct mode of address is a very important convention that lets the audience know of their importance, so if my target audience feels important and is attracted to it they will surely buy the magazine.

Contents

The contents of my music magazine quantity of features are less as my target audience like to see more pictures and less text in the magazine. Secondly I have made use of the left side third convention to make it easier for my target audience to read the matter. The additional information I have used in the footer of the cover page so it takes up less space. The most important things that are also the highlight of my magazine and are the most interesting feature for the audience are the cover line and the pull quote. Now the cover line (like mast head) is centralized, bold and in red color. So after the mast head it is the main feature that attracts my target audience accompanied by the pull quote. All this done in a consistent color scheme. One other thing that I kept check of is the usage of language. I have kept is rather simple so the target audience of my magazine find it easier to understand the text and keeps them interested. Also I made use of the very attractive “FREE” giveaways convention, which is a major contributive factor to the popularity of my magazine amongst my target audience. The price of my magazine (along side the bar code) is within the reach of an ordinary person to make my magazine even more appealing for the target audience

Images

Like I mentioned before, the target audience for my music magazine prefers to see more images than text which is why I added multiple images (main and subsidiary) to attract my target audience. Also the placement of the images with respect to the text, I tried to make it easier for the reader to read and go through pictures by placing them on either side of the page keeping the convention of left side third in play as well while adressing my target audience.

Starting off with the heading, it is written in big, bold font to let the reader know what the contents of the page are. Then the name of the band is tilted and again written in a bigger font comparatively, to attract audience towards it. Keeping the color scheme constant through all the components of my magazine, here to I have used the same colors, however since he text on this page is more than the cover page so the usage of the red color is increased to keep the audience attracted. An additional thing I added to this page is the slogan of my magazine in the bottom (again with the colors red and black), that again an attractive feature. The language that I used in this page too is easy and with reasonable fonts making them easier for my target audience to read. The page numbers too are made as attractive as possible and their fonts are bigger, compared to how usually the page numbers are in the magazines, to make it easier for my target audience to find what article they are looking for.

The image is placed on the left so that the reader is instantly attracted to the page. Again the style f the models and the props have been used to attract audience and the color scheme goes so well with the picture so a certain level of enthusiasm is upheld when we see this page as a whole.

Contents

The important content such as the heading and the name of the band is in red color for maximum attention by the audience. Other important text such as the pull quote is written in yellow so that it too is highlighted and the rest of the text is in white making it easier for the reader to read and maintains a level of enthusiasm as the color scheme is in play. Here I have not used the left side third convention in terms of the text because the amount of text present on this page is the maximum compared to all the pages so I wanted the image to be the highlighted to attract the audience. The page numbers however have been kept small to be the least attention seeking so that the reader pays more attention to the contents and is not distracted.
