Chipset History

The first chipset was the “NEAT” (New Enhanced AT chipset) chipset by the company named, “Chips and Technologies” in 1998.

What are Chipsets?

Refers to a group of integrated circuits, or chips, that are designed to work together.

Chipsets control the motherboard.

Chipset Parts

The term “chipset” often refers to a specific pair of chips on the motherboard: the northbridge and the southbridge.

Northbridge chip functions: • Memory Controller• AGP Controller• CPU Controller

Southbridge Chip Functions:• Hard disk drive ports• PCI bus• USB ports

Latest Chipsets

Current manufacturers of chipsets for motherboards include NVIDIA, AMD, VIA Technologies, Intel and Broadcom.

Quantenna Communications has made a high speed chipset with 600 mbps which is twice the speed of competing chipsets.
