What is a fraction

• A fraction is a number that expresses part of a group

• Fractions are written in the form

Fractions are parts of a whole.

They are not indicating how large the whole is. Rather, they describe what part of the whole is

represented.

Denominator

• A denominator tells us how many parts the whole is divided into.

The denominator is b in the fraction.

• The numerator tells us how many of those parts in the denominator that we are dealing with.

The numerator is a in the fraction.

Students are to answer the questions in fraction form and draw a pie chart of the fractions.
