FRACTIONS

What is a fraction

• A fraction is a number that expresses part of a group

• Fractions are written in the form

How much of the pizza is left?

How much chocolate did the kids eat?

Fractions are parts of a whole.

They are not indicating how large the whole is. Rather, they describe what part of the whole is

represented.

What fraction of the animals are pigs?

What whole number names the shaded area?

A. 6

B. 1 C. 5

Denominator

• A denominator tells us how many parts the whole is divided into.

The denominator is b in the fraction.

Numerator

• The numerator tells us how many of those parts in the denominator that we are dealing with.

The numerator is a in the fraction.

Activity

• How many students are in the class?• What fraction of the students are boys?• What fraction of the students are girls?• What fraction of students are wearing short

sleeves today?• What fraction of the students have brown

hair?

Students are to answer the questions in fraction form and draw a pie chart of the fractions.

Example: What fraction of the cake was eaten?
