HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL

GROUPS?

WHAT IS A SOCIAL GROUP?

A social group is a collection of people who usually share the same beliefs and values, having something in common with each other and therefore getting on well as a group like structure.

The social group for our character Detective Crawford is represented by male detectives. Through research and opinions from our target audience we decided they liked stern, serious detectives to be in thriller investigating the mystery. As soon as I found this out I decided to research into suitable yet similar characters from different thriller films. Using Seven as an example I concluded that stereotypically male detectives are used in thrillers. The features of this social group are:• They are usually very sharp and witty.• They are masculine; yet sensitive usually madly in love with

their partner which is normally their downfall.• They are mostly represented as a loving family man.• Detectives are always represented as being dedicated to the

case they are investigating.

DETECTIVE SOCIAL GROUP

DETECTIVE CRAWFORDA key representation of this social group is the Detective from The Fugitive. The detective in The Fugitive, Samuel Gerrard costume and design is quite casual. This shows his authority, dressing in everyday clothing. This shows us that the character is not suspicious being in a detective type role. Our detective is similar in terms of clothing wearing black as a code of convention of a thriller. The social group is detectives, who are not very formal showing their power. When the detective is on screen in our thriller the sound on the sequence is always very serious. The score represents the Detective as being angry with himself as he cannot figure out the case. The detective similar to Samuel Gerrard use weapons and are perceived as a serious character socially in conversation. For example in our film Vindicta conversation between the detective and assistant the conversation is extremely awkward and not much is said in the over the shoulder. I think this shows that the film is mysterious making you ask yourself what the detective is thinking.

JANE CRAWFORD

• The victims social group is the Crawford's, being girlfriend to the detective who is investigating the case into the serial killer. The story changes as it becomes very personal when the girlfriend is included in the path of obstruction which the serial killer creates when he decides to target her. I think this is a good ending because it can lead well onto the story leaving it on a cliff-hanger. The victim could be compared to Helen Kimble from the fugitive as they are both vulnerable and put in an awkward situation which is hard to react to.

ROMAN MORTEM

I would say that the villain of the film is similar in regards that the social group for murderer's would predominantly wear black and there face would not likely be shown to the audience near till near the end of the opening. This creates a sense of mystery as the identity of the villain is not revealed till near the end. I would compare the villain in our film to Jack Torrance from The Shining. This film is unpredictable as is our behind the motives of the killings, both Jack Torrance and Roman Mortem are intriguing characters.

ASSISTANT DETECTIVEThe assistant detective would be in the assistant social group. He works under a more respected person with more authority which is Detective Crawford. The main characteristic of the assistant is that they must remain professional. The assistant must be formal to show respect to the main detective as he is working under his orders and power. This was influenced from the assistant detective in The fugitive. The assistant detective Detective Kelly is male and this occupation is widely male populated.
