OSMOTIC PROPERTIES OF SWIM BLADDER
To investigate the osmotic properties of swim bladder using
data logger.
OBJECTIVE
Fish is the one of aquatic life. it can swim to the deep and shallow level of water. What is the ability of the fish that affect it to swim in the water? Explain.
ENGAGE
I need stability to swim
Hypothesis 1• Is swimming bladder is selectively permeable
then it will demonstrate osmotic properties
Experiment procedure 1 1. A fresh swim bladder is used to construct an
osmometer (see photograph below). 2. The bladder is filled with sucrose solution and
placed in a beaker of distilled water. 3. Pressure sensor is used to measure the pressure
change inside the swim bladder.

Hypothesis 2 If the tissue of swim bladder is “killed” by boiling,
then the membrane will cease to be selectively permeable, and osmosis will not occur.
Experiment procedure A fresh swim bladder is boiled until it appears
well done. The boiled swim bladder is used to construct an
osmometer as before. The bladder is filled with sucrose solution and
placed in a beaker of distilled water. Pressure sensor is used to measure the pressure
change inside the swim bladder.

Hypothesis 3 If the tissue of swim bladder is “killed” by freezing
and drying, then the membrane will cease to be selectively permeable, osmosis will not occur.
Experiment procedure A fresh swim bladder was hung in ambient air and
allowed to dry for days (see below). Another fresh swim bladder is left frozen overnight, in
the freezer compartment of a domestic refrigerator. Both swim bladders were soaked in tap water at room
temperature for 20 minutes. Osmometers are constructed with the swim bladders. The bladder is filled with sucrose solution and placed
in a beaker of distilled water. Pressure sensor is used to measure the pressure
change inside the swim bladder.

1. What happen to the swim bladder in the water?2. What does the relationship between selectively
permeable of swim bladder and the change of pressure in the experiment?
3. What is the effect of high and low temperature to the osmotic pressure in the swim bladder?
4. Does the high temperature affect the tissue of the swim bladder?
5. Does the tissues of swim bladder is affected by freezing and dried condition?
6. What are the osmotic properties of swim bladder
EMPOWER(DISCUSSION)
ENHANCE
Have you ever seen this phenomenon before? Why does the fish unable to swim properly in order
to rise to the top of the water.
