Our history

This is the story of a heart-felt passion for vine cultivation. This isthe result of the constant daily effort and dedication of peoplewho have firmly believed in their work for over 50 years. Thanksto the initiative of 19 farmers, Colonnara was founded inCupramontana in 1959. The ideal microclimate of the sweet hillsof the Marches region lead to the cultivation of Verdicchio, which has become the pride of this territory over the centuries. This company has grown over time. Today it hasover 100 associates and thanks to the use of innovativetechnology and the practice of environmentally friendly farming,it has managed to develop a production range that may besingled out among high quality wines, which are distributed overthe entire national and foreign territory. Colonnara has notforgotten its roots, its link to farming traditions. Around herethey say wine is made in the vineyard, it is only educated in thecellar and then “presented’ in the best possible way in thebottle.

Our territory

It is in the heart of this region, in the province of Ancona, inCupramontanta, that we find Colonnara, a company that has beeninterpreting and expressing the essence of this territory for over fortyyears. Situated in the hills of the Castelli di Jesi, where the “Verdicchio”wine has been cultivated in an ideal habitat for centuries now, producing a wine that is unobtainable elsewhere. The vine growing andwine producing tradition of Cupramontana is thousands of years old.The precious visual testimony of this is the cornucopia containingbunches of grapes which is held up by a winged putto, a fragment of abigger marble decoration dating back to Roman times, which oncedecorated the home of some patrician from the ancient Cupramontana.Benedictine monks taught the people again about agriculturalcultivation and in particular about the vine. Then the monks weredispersed but their “teaching” conquered growing spaces and the vinegrowing and wine producing sector progressively affirmed itsimportance making Cupramontana a land that “is full of vines thatproduce exquisite wines in abundance”

The Colonnara vineyards are situated in the oldest Verdicchio grapeproduction area.

The microclimate, which varies from area to area along with thedifferent altitudes of the vineyards, which range from 350 to 650metres above sea level, and the distinct composition of the soil, allrepresent aspects of the company patrimony, which are unrepeatablein any other zone.

It is thanks to this patrimony that Colonnara manages to producesparkling wines, fresh young wines and more full-bodied and noblewines for ageing from the autochthonous Verdicchio grape.

The Colonnara wines, the vineyards of which are situated on the righthand of the Esino River, are mostly influenced by the proximity of theApennines.

Colonnara wines are the result of a perfect blend of various differentelements: the territory, the microclimate and the workmanship. Itsfour ranges of wine: Nobili, Classici , Contemporanei and Autoctoni –represent the ideal “stages” in a “journey” towards pleasure.
