INTRODUCTION

• International competition; Organized by the U.S. Department of Energy

• First held in U.S.A in 2002; Held biennially since 2005

• Design and construct a fully functional house powered by solar energy

• 20 teams are selected from across the world

• First ever Indian team to be selected in the competition

• Collaboration of IIT Bombay and Rachana Sansad’s Academy of Architecture

• Over 70 students and 10 professors from various disciplines

• Shunya- “Zero” to represent a net zero energy house

• Sustainable and affordable house in the Indian context for the middle class home owner

• To sustainably meet the exponentially growing demand for urban housing in India

Mission

• To bring about a change in the building industry by demonstrating the affordability and feasibility of sustainable housing

• To raise awareness in the nation about energy efficiency, responsible energy use and the potential of renewable energy with focus on solar energy
