ANDALUSIAN CENTER FOR MARINE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
The Andalusian Center for Marine Science and Technology (CACYTMAR) was created by agreement between the Andalusian Government and the University of Cadiz in 1999, as part of a program intended to the creation of thematic research of regional dimension linked to the University.
The main objective of CACYTMAR is to coordinate the actions of the different institutions and administrations with competences on the marine environment in the Andalusian region, to improve the protection of the marine environment and sustainable management of the marine resources.
Parallel to this objective CACYTMAR also aims to promote the generation of knowledge in the field of marine science and technology through the promotion and implementation of research and development activities that are articulated in the framework of the Andalusian Research, Development and Innovation Plan.
ABOUT US
At present , CACYTMAR is aimed to be a determinant contributing element to the achievement of the scientific improvement plan, committed in the frame of the “INTERNATIONAL CAMPUS OF EXCELENCE OF THE SEA” coordinated by the University of Cádiz.
One of the action plan of the CAMPUS is to create “THE ENVIRONMENTAL OBSERVATORY OF THE STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR” (which actually comprises the Region of the Gulf of Cadiz – Strait of Gibraltar –Alboran Sea).
This observatory is intended to be an essential tool to aid the application of the MARINE STRATEGY FRAME WORK in this important oceanic region connecting the Atlantic and the Mediterranean basins.

ATMOSPHERIC AND OCEANIC MODELING
Development, implementation and validation of atmospheric and hydro-dynamical numerical models in the Gulf of Cadiz – Strait of Gibraltar – Alboran Sea region.
ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY
-Development of new technologies for wastewater treatment in order to minimize the environmental impact of these when they are dumped to sea.
- Development of methodologies to evaluate the quality and the environmental risk of coastal systems affected by different sources of anthropogenic pollution.
Chorophyll concentration (MODIS)
BIOLOGICAL OCEANOGRAPHY
It is devoted to study the eco-physiology of marine plankton and the structure of planktonic communities, with special emphasis on the effects of global change on these communities causes. Also , this laboratory integrate the study of fish population dynamics.
CELL CULTURE AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
This laboratory is intended to the study of the hormonal and environmental control of physiological processes such as development and reproduction of marine species of interest in aquaculture (sea bass, sole).
MARINE BIOGEOCHEMISTRY
The main activity is related to the study of the role of ocean and coastal waters in the uptake of atmospheric CO2. Also it is investigated the use of microalgae culture as a means for eliminating this CO2.
This laboratory studies the behavior of different materials in marine environments. This line is of special interest to improve the materials used to build the instrumentation or facilities which have to remain submerged in the sea for long periods of time.
MARINE CORROSION
It performs coastal-risk analysis by modeling coastal morphodynamic processes and evaluation of possible evolution of these processes against Climate Change.
