How to use these lesson plans
This lesson plan packet contains the following:
Book list
1-page weekly lesson plan grid o Alternate weekly grids for 4 day, 3 day, and 2 day programs
5 daily lesson plan sheets
2-page centers explanation
Printables
Use the Book List to stock your classroom reading center and choose which books
you’ll read aloud during the apple theme.
The 1-page weekly lesson plan has ideas for center activities, read alouds,
whole group lessons, small group math lessons, small group science lessons, and small group literacy lessons.
The alternate lesson plan sheets are perfect for creating your own plans if
you teach a 4-day, 3-day, or 2-day preschool program. Simply grab the items you’d like and arrange them to the calendar that’s best suited for you. These sheets are editable – so you can type in the dates, days of the week, and activities. You can also just print the templates and handwrite your plans.
The daily lesson plans delve into the specifics of each lesson idea. Materials are
included along the top of each daily plan. The days of the week and dates on these sheets are editable.
The centers explanation has more information about each center activity. There
are 2 to 3 ideas for each center. Some teachers keep the same activities in each center for an entire week, while others like to change the activities a couple times a week.
You can pick and choose the activities that suit you and your classroom best. For example, maybe some of the small group ideas would be better done during your whole group time. You may decide to use some of the small group ideas during center time. Even though the plans are listed as one week, there are really enough activities to encompass an additional week or two if you incorporate non-themed activities.

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy Things to do in the Snow
Talk to the children about what happens when it snows. Make a list of the things that they like doing in the
snow (make snowmen, have snowball fights, etc.), along with other things
people do when it snows (wear heavy jackets, shovel the driveway, etc.). Model writing as you create the list.
Leave the list up for future reference.
Snowball Names Kids use paper hole-reinforcement stickers to make their names out of
“snowballs”.
Small Group Science Small Group Math
Snowflake Videos Engaging videos the kids can watch to
learn more about snow.
Counting Snowballs Use tweezers and cotton balls to
practice early math and fine motor skills.

Rhyming Words
Remind the children that rhyming words sound the same at the end. Give them an example or two. Ask them to help come up with words that rhyme
with snow. Write the list on a piece of chart paper. Optional - allow the
children to add illustrations.
Snowflake Sounds Place a snowflake manipulative (cotton ball, printable, etc.) to
represent each sound in a word (ex: “snow” has 3 sounds). Say each sound
while pointing to the appropriate snowflake. Ask child to point to the
snowflake that represents /s/. Move on to the other sounds. Ask them to
identify the beginning sound, as child is comfortable with the task.
Small Group Science Small Group Math
Snowflake STEM Use different shapes to engineer
paper snowflakes.
Popsicle Stick Snowflake Math Invite children to explore symmetry
and art with popsicle stick snowflakes.

Do You Like Snow? Graphing Write the question, “Do you like
snow?” at the top of a piece of chart paper (or a sentence strip in a pocket
chart). Underneath the question, create a column for “Yes” and a column for “No”. Have each child
decide how she wants to answer, and then add her name to the chart. This
can be done by simply writing her name, or art can be integrated by
using a snowflake with her name on it.
Phoneme Segmentation Say a word. Have kids drop/toss/move a "snowflake" (foam snowflake, cotton ball, printable) for each sound in the
word.
Small Group Science Small Group Math
Crystal Snowflakes Explore crystallization and
suspensions with this classic science activity.
Snowflake Sorting and Patterns Sort snowflakes by size and snowflake type. Then use them to create various patterns. Use craft foam snowflakes or the printables included in this lesson
plan packet.

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy
Snowflake Songs Listen and sing along to some kid-friendly snow songs. Get into the
action and be sure to move around, too.
Emergent Reader Have the children read each page and
add the correct number of snowflakes. Use snowflake stickers, stamps, or have children draw the
snowflakes. They can also cut out and glue on the printable snowflakes that come with the reader. Depending on
the children, use the reader that counts 1 to 5, or the reader that
counts 1 to 10.
Small Group Science Small Group Math
Fizzing Snowflakes Mix 3 parts baking soda and 1 part water to form a paste. Spoon the mixture into snowflake-shaped ice cube trays. Add Jell-O powder for scent and color. Freeze for a few
hours. Take the frozen snowflakes out of the tray. Let children make them
fizz by dropping vinegar from pipettes.
Design a Snowflake Give kids 10-20 craft sticks. Challenge
them to design a snowflake with X number of craft sticks. Use the
printable snowflake cards as guides for the challenge number.

Materials Read Aloud Ice cube trays; salt Big Snow
Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy
Snowflake Patterns Get the kids involved in making and extending patterns. Explain that a
pattern repeats over and over. Give an example. Hand out printable
snowflake cards. Have children work together to extend a pattern you start.
Then move to having the kids create their own pattern. Have them stand up
and hold the cards as they create patterns.
Beginning Sound Sort Sort the printable snowflakes based
on initial sound.
Small Group Science Small Group Math
Melt Frozen Snowflakes Freeze water in ice cube trays. Allow
children to experiment with melting the ice using cold water, warm water, and
salt.
Roll and Graph Print and assemble the roll and graph
game. Kids roll the die and record which snowflake pattern came out on
top. Once the game is over, make observations about the graph.

Centers
Arts & Crafts Snowflake blotto art – Explore symmetry with this blotto art activity. Simple snowflake craft – Use paper strips to assemble snowflakes. Then explore art, symmetry, and patterns by decorating the snowflakes.
Science Snowflake observation – Print out real pictures of snowflakes and place in a basket. Include non-fiction snowflake books. Allow children to make observations and record what they see in science journals. Make a snowflake – Place small craft sticks out, along with pictures of real snowflakes. Encourage children to recreate the snowflakes in the pictures, using the craft sticks.
Pretend Play
“Snowball” fight – Place cotton balls or rolled up socks in the dramatic play center. Children could pretend to have a snowball fight or build snowmen. Snowy day – Add jackets, boots, hats, and gloves to the dramatic play center. Be sure to have mugs for “hot chocolate”, too. Children can pretend to be playing outside, and then come in and have a treat in the warmth.
Literacy Snowflake letter cards – Children use the cards to practice ABC order, math uppercase and lowercase letters, and make words. Sensory writing tray – Place Epsom salt in a shallow tray. Kids can use their fingers to draw letters, words, or patterns. Simply shake the tray to “erase” what’s been written.
© Preschool Teacher 101 May not be distributed or shared without express written permission Font © Hello Literacy
Centers
Math Snowflake number cards – Use the number cards to count and order. Add glass gems to explore one-to-one correspondence. Sorting and patterns – Let children continue to practice sorting and making patterns using printable snowflakes or snowflake manipulatives.
Sensory Snowflake play dough – Gather sparkly manipulatives and glittery white play dough, and invite kids to make their own unique snowflakes. Super sparkly fake snow – Make snowy cloud dough for a sensory play experience. Add glitter and snowflake sequins, along with scoops and spoons.
Building
Winter village – Add cotton balls and/or snowflake manipulatives to the block play area. Children can create a winter village using blocks and “snow”. Block snowflakes – Kids can use wood blocks, LEGO, or other manipulatives to create snowflakes.

Directions: Print letter cards. Cut in half diagonally, from the top-right corner to the bottom-left corner (so uppercase and lowercase are separate). Laminate for durability. Children match the uppercase to lowercase letters, like a puzzle.
