CIRCLES

Some Important Formulae

1. Circumference = 2π x radius

2. Circumference = π x diameter

3. Area of circle= π× (radius)²

4. Diameter = 2 x radius

5. Radius = Diameter ÷ 2

Q1. Find the diameter of a circle whose radius is

a) 24 cm

b) 12.5 m

Answer: a) Diameter = 2 x radius

Diameter = 2 x 24 cm

Diameter = 48 cm

Answer: b) Diameter = 2 x radius

Diameter = 2 x 12.5 m

Diameter = 25 m

Page 8: PREPOSITIONS - DPS Bokaro

Q2. Find the radius of a circle whose diameter is

a) 84 cm

b) 17 m

Answer: a) Radius = Diameter ÷ 2

Radius = 84 cm ÷ 2

Radius = 42 cm

Answer: b) Radius = Diameter ÷ 2

Radius = 17 m ÷ 2

Radius = 8.5 m

Q3. Find the circumference of a circle whose radius is

a) 14 mm

b) 20 m

Answer: a) Circumference= 2π x radius

Circumference = 2 x 22

7 x 14 mm

Circumference = 88 mm

Answer: b) Circumference= 2π x radius

Circumference = 2 x 22

7 x 20 m

Circumference = 125.71 m

Q4. Find the circumference of a circle whose diameter is

a) 35 cm

b) 15 mm

Answer: a) Circumference= π x diameter

Page 9: PREPOSITIONS - DPS Bokaro

Circumference = 22

7 x 35 cm

Circumference = 110 cm

b) Circumference= π x diameter

Circumference = 22

7 x 15 mm

Circumference = 330

7 mm = 47.14 mm

Q5. Find the area of a circle whose radius is 21 m.

Answer: Area of circle = π× (radius)²

Area = 22

7 x 21m x 21m

Area = 1386 m2

Q6. Construct a circle of diameter 8 cm.

Solution: If diameter is 8cm, then radius is 4cm.

So, let us draw a circle with centre O and radius OA= 4 cm.

Page 10: PREPOSITIONS - DPS Bokaro

Q7. Draw two concentric circles with radii 2.5 cm and 4 cm.

Exercise:

Q1. Find the radius of a circle whose diameter is 15 cm.

Ls-12 Light and Shadow (Contd.)

Shadow- A shadow is a dark shape that is formed when an opaque or

translucent object blocks a source of light.

Following are the things necessary for the formation of a shadow:-

a light source

an opaque object

an opaque screen or surface on which the shadow is to be formed.

Formation of a shadow

Characteristics of a Shadow –

1) Position of a shadow- A shadow is always formed opposite to the source of

light.

2) Shape of a shadow-The shape of shadow depends the angle in which light

falls on it or the shape of the part of the object that blocks the path of light.

3) Size of a shadow- The size of a shadow decreases when the object is moved

towards the screen. The size of a shadow increases when the object is

moved towards the light source.

Page 12: PREPOSITIONS - DPS Bokaro

A shadow usually has two parts- an area of complete darkness

at the centre known as the umbra and an area of partial darkness at

the edges known as penumbra. The umbra receives no light from the

source while the penumbra receives only some light from the source. A

large source of light forms a shadow with an umbra and penumbra.A

small source of light forms only an umbra.

Eclipses- Shadows formed when the Sun, the Earth and the moon come in

a straight line, with the Sun at one end are called eclipses.

How does an eclipse occur ?

The sun remains stationary in its place. The earth revolves around the sun

and the moon revolves around the earth. An eclipse involving the sun, moon

and the earth occurs when they are nearly in a straight line, allowing one to

be hidden behind another.

Solar Eclipse- Solar means ‘related to the Sun’. During a solar eclipse, the Sun

is hidden from our view. Solar eclipse occurs when the three celestial bodies

(Sun, moon and Earth) form a line, and the moon comes in between the Earth

and the Sun. It usually occurs during the new moon.

Page 13: PREPOSITIONS - DPS Bokaro

When the Sun is completely blocked by the moon, it is called a total solar

eclipse. When the Sun and the moon are not exactly in line and the moon

only partially blocks the Sun, it is called a partial solar eclipse.

Lunar Eclipse- Lunar means ‘related to the moon’. During a lunar eclipse,

the moon is hidden from our view. Lunar eclipse occurs when the three

celestial bodies ( Sun, Earth and moon ) form a line, wherein Earth comes

in between the Sun and the moon. It occurs during full moon.

Lunar Eclipse

When the moon is completely blocked by the Earth, it is called a total lunar

eclipse. When the Earth only partially blocks the moon,it is called a partial

lunar eclipse .

MS EXCEL: FILTER (AUTO FILTER)

Filters can be used to narrow down the data in your worksheet andhide parts of it from view.

Filtering is different because it allows you to qualify and display onlythe data that interests you.

The FILTER function in Excel is used to filter a range of data based onthe criteria that you specify. The result is an series of values thatautomatically spills into a range of cells, starting from the cell whereyou enter a formula.

AutoFilter, is a quick way to display only the information relevant ata given time and remove all other data from view. You can filter rowsin Excel worksheets by value, by format and by criteria. Afterapplying a filter, you can copy, edit, chart or print

Page 23: PREPOSITIONS - DPS Bokaro

only visible rows without rearranging the entire list.

There are 3 ways to FILTER data1. On the Data tab, in the Sort & Filter group, clickthe Filter button.

Page 24: PREPOSITIONS - DPS Bokaro

2. On the Home tab, in the Editing group, click Sort &Filter > Filter.

3. Use the Excel Filter shortcut to turn the filterson/off: Ctrl+Shift+L

Whatever method you use, the drop-down arrows will appear ineach of the header cells:

A drop-down arrow in the column heading means that filteringis added, but not applied yet. When you CLICK over the arrow, ascreen tip displays (Showing All).

To filter data in Excel, do the following:

1. Click the drop-down arrow for the column you want tofilter.

2. Uncheck the Select All box to quickly deselect all data.3. Check the boxes next to the data you want to display, andclick OK.

Page 25: PREPOSITIONS - DPS Bokaro

For example, If we want to see the names of only those studentswho scored 25 in maths.
