By KEITH PETERSTo the casual track and field observer, Bill Green

and Anthony Curra'n have little or nothing in common.

In fact, prior to today, Green had never heard of,Curran.

Green is a junior and attends CubberleyHigh.Curran is asenior and attends Crespi High'inEncino.'Green is a sprinter and Curran is a pole v'aulter. Buthere any disimilarity ends. "

Both athletes, who have never formally met, willbe in Bakersfield this weekend for the 60th annualCalifornia Interscholastic Federation (CIF) statemeet. And both are national leaders in their respec-tive events heading into today's trials." '

Curran tops the n,ation in the pole ,vault with amark of I7-4114-the national record---:and is theoverwhelming favorite for the gold medal in Satur-day's finals. " " , .

Green, currently the hottest track talent in theCentral Coast Section, is the country's No. I prepquartermiler with his sizzlitlg 47.0." '

Both will carry that extra pressure with them intothe meet. Or will they? '

"I don't think there's any extra pressure," says theunflappable Green, who likes the idea of being thenation's fastest prepquartermiler.

Green has perhaps the best chance of any Midpeninsula athlete of winning a gold medal. Rod Bethany of Fontana High, who finished third in last year'sstate meet with a 47.9, appears to be Green's stiffestcompetition with a 1978 best of 47.31.

After' that, the challenge could be from Region IIcompetitors Art Nicholson of Menlo-Atherton (47.9)and Tony Thompson of Woodside (48.0) or MikeWhite of Richmond (48.1)., ..At stake, along with the gold medal, is the meetrecord of 46.6 held by James Sanford of USC andLarence Jones-a current member of the San Fran-

,!cisco 4ge'rs. ,:""WhiJe Green stands a good chance at a gold in the440'and a decent chance at a medal in the 220 wherehe brings a best of21.4, he's not the onlyCCS athletewith that opportunity.

Carlos Carrasco of Mt. Pleasant is the state leaderin the two mile with a best of 9:02.6 and could' win'sinc;::edefending champion Frank Assumma of Eisenhower High in Rialto qualified onlyinthe mile.Assumma's brother, Chuck, will miss the competi-tion altogether with a stress fracture. ,

Kobert Smith of Awalt has dropped seven secondsin the miJe this year, from a 4: 19.9 early in the year tohis current best of 4: 12.0, but is still three seconds

, behind Dave Bahanl of Hart High in Newhali who isthe state leader and co-national leader at 4:09.4,

CCS pole vault entrants Bert Tardieu of Del Mar(16-1314), Ross McAlexander of Monta Vista (15-61/2)and Mitch Preciado of Homestead (15-6) standchances for medals, as long as they don't mind silveror bronze while Steve Struble of Sunnyvale is milesaway from a gold but could still pick up a secondor third in the discus if he can duplicate his best of185-1.

Dave Porath of Atwater appears a likely winner inboth the discus and shot put with state bests of 206-6 ,and 64-10, respectively. }

Steve Bruce of Menlo-Atherton is among the state Ileaders in the long Jump with a 23-81/2 best, but Gary t

Butler of Fremont High of Lo~ Angeleshas gone 25-4. ~_ SS~:,~ G_!:l!hri~o!S,YI?,e,rJt!Wa~d lY1alcQ"IIJ;;q~xon.oL ~(

COMPETING IN this, one ofthe finesthigh school vault fields ever assembled, were Homestead's Mitch Preciado andMonta Mista's Ross McAlexander.

Both had trouble with a fluctuatingwind in the stadium, to the extent thatPreciado barely made his opening heightof 13-9with a third attempt clearance. Theduo qualified with efforts of 14-3,however,

. to advance it into the 12-man finals ..On Saturday the wind conditions were

the same, constantly alternating betweena headwind and tailwind. McAlexanderhad a moderate clearance at 14-8, then

The pair then sat back and watchedCurran set another national record at 1751,4, adding the senior class mark to hisother class records of 14-8% as a freshman, 15-91,4as a soph and 16-41,4as ajunior. The record may be disallowed forthe UCLA-bound Curran, however, as thebar flipped up off one peg and onto the topof the standard. '

By BRIAN HOEY

DEFENDING champion Kris Costelloof Lynbrook set a state record and tied thenational standard while winning the 110low hurdles at the 60th annual CIF StateTrack and Field Championships Saturday,in Bakersfield.

Costello's performance highlighted DeAnza League efforts, which saw nine of 14area athletes qualify during Friday'spreliminaries for the ,next day's finals.

The senior Vikin~. third at CCS whilefavoring torn cartilage in one knee, blazedan electronically timed 13.83in a race thatproduced the three top clockings in thenation for 1978.The mark was rounded offto equal the national record of 13.8.

"I WAS REALLY nervous at the startof the race," said Costello. who has accepted a full-ride scholarship to the Universityof Oregon in Eugene and plans to major in

, pre-med."Kim (Costello of El Camino, South San

Francisco) had a faster time going into it,and I was never really sure whether myknee would hold up or start ripping. Plus, the fact that I put pressure on mvself.since I was the defending champion."

Lynbrook also entered freshmen CCSqueens Tracy Weber in the mile and Kr.istyCampbell in the long jump. Neither madethe finals as Weber ran 5:03.3 for eighth inher heat while Campbell leaped 17-21/2 for19th overall.

WOODBECK, ONLY a junior, has beensurprising coaches and competitors alikeever since the league meet, where shebroke her foot after a winning toss. Sincethen, she has limped through the regionand section meets on crutches, throwingwith her foot heavily taped.

She was also on crutches during thestate meet where she qualified eighth inFriday's prelims at 123-2,then came backthe next day to place sixth with a 122-9effort.

"The pain is not really a factor," saidthe 5-10 blonde, who gutted out the post-

. season meets this year after a disappointing sophomore campaign in which sheplaced sixth in the CCS after entering withthe second-ranked throw, thus missing thestate meet.

"It only hurts just when I release it. Thedoctors say it'll take about six weeks toheal. "

Cupertino girls' coach Chuck Beanadded, "Karen's key was her consistency, even if it was on a bad foot. She kept getting out to the same distance when ev~ryone around her was choking because of thepressure. "

PIONEER SENIOR Steve Finley, CCSrunner-up in the long jump, placed 19thoverall with a leap of 22-2%in the prelims.Junior miler Dave Avila, also a secondplacer, in the section, did not run due topersonal problems.

Probably the toughest event DALrepresentatives entered was the pOlevault.

The names and heights were awesome;Steve Tully from Millikan, brother ofUCLA's world recordholder Mike, andphenomena Anthony Curran of Crespi-Encino, who set the national high schoolrecord of 17-41,4this year.

THE DAL ALSO sent Steve Struble ofSunnyvale in the discus. The seniorqualified fourth in the prelims at 175-11,but threw three straight fouls in the finalsto finish unplaced. His Friday mark wouldhave tied him for second place overall.
