HOW DO I CHOOSE WHICH MILK TO GIVE TO MY BABY ?

In fact, certain milks made for infants are specifically produced for specific situations (ex: allergies) . A wide variety of milk for infants exists . Discuss with your doctor or an ONE social worker about the best milk options for your baby .

Avoid adding cookies, vitamins, sugar, cocoa, or honey to your child’s milk .The milk itself is enough !

WHAT BOTTLE AND WHAT NIPPLE SHOULD I USE ?

Without first being modified, cow’s milk is not suitable to the needs of infants . Its composition is not helpful for an infant’s growth or his health .

This is why many infant milk formulas exist, each adapted to the age of the child .

• Try to use bottles made of glass . Since 2011, laws have been adopted which prohibit the sale of plastic baby bottles containing bisphenol A .

• Different nipple models exist . There are models made of silicone or rubber, of diffe-rent shapes and variables rates of flow . There is no ideal nipple for all infants, so try different types to see what works best for your child .

• Replace bottles and nipples at the first signs of wear, such as cracks .

• BOTTLEOFWATER: Some bottles of water have labels which say they are suitable for the preparation of infants’ food . Try to use only these bottles of water when mixing your child’s meals .

Water filtration systems are not necessary . In fact, if not used correctly they could become infested with bacteria and therefore be a danger to your baby .

• TAPWATER:Suitable for the preparation of bottles from the age of 4 months . To ensure good water quality, use cold water and let it flow a while before using it .

HOW MUCH MILK TO GIVE MY BABY ?

In general, a baby will take at least 6 to 8 bottles every 24 hours during the first three months of life .

THEAMOUNTOFMILKYOURBABYNEEDSWILLRISEASHEGETSOLDERANDBIGGER.Just like for adults, a baby’s appetite varies from day to day and meal to meal .

Giving a baby a bottle with an excessive amount of milk can cause increased frequency of regurgitations .

After the introduction of solid foods, gradually increase to 3 bottles of 180 ml of water + 6 scoops . Up until the child is one year old, he needs 600 ml of milk each day .

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY BABY IS HUNGRY ?

His mouth is open, and he is searching

for a nipple .

He makes little noises with his mouth .

He is alert

He moves his hands, his feet, and he puts

his hands in his mouth .

Trust that your baby will communicate his hunger to you in ways other than crying . Observe your baby and you will learn his ways of communicating .

SHOULD MY BABY DRINK WATER ?

During the first months your baby will only drink milk . It is not necessary to give him water or anything to drink other than his bottles of milk . On the contrary, in case of fever or hot weather, do not hesitate to offer a few spoonfuls of natural water to your baby .

Fever

Hot Weather

Don’t add anything to the water (herbal tea, grenadine, sugar, lemonade, syrups) . If your baby is thirsty, he will drink the wa-ter without anything added .

The crying is not necessarily due to his food . Take the time to understand the needs of your baby . Don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor or one of ONE’s social workers .

Yourbabyneedsmilkduringthenight,too.

During the first months of life, your baby’s stomach is small (1 week: 30ml and 1 month : +/- 120ml) . Therefore, your baby needs to eat regularly, which includes eating during the night . Every nursing infant has his own sleeping schedule, with some sleeping 5 to 6 hours at a time for the first few weeks, whereas other infants won’t start to do until later . Be patient . The sleeping schedule of your baby will develop little by little and the nights will become longer .Until your baby reaches the age of 4 to 6 months, a feeding in during the night is considered normal and healthy .

Ifigivemybabyalargebottleofmilkbeforebedtimehewillsleeplongerduringthenight.

During the first months, it is completely normal for your baby to wake up during the night because he is hungry . Offering him a large bottle before bedtime will not lead to him sleeping longer and skipping this nighttime meal .

On the contrary, this could make nights more difficult because it could give the baby digestion problems and regurgitations due to consuming too much milk at one time .

The evolving sleep schedule of the baby is not related to his feeding schedule .

Horsemilkisjustasgoodformybabyasbreastmilk.

Mammal milk (sheep, horse, cow) are not suitable for infants and children . When the child no longer receives breast milk, it is then recommended to give him formula .

These types of milk for infants are produced using some cow or sheep milk that have been modified to meet the specific nutritional needs of nursing and growing infants . These products must meet very strict legislation standards .

Thebabybottlesthatmysister-in-lawgavemecouldcontainbisphenolA(BPA).

IshouldgraduallyraisetheamountofmilkIgivemybabyashegrows.

Increasing the amount of milk given to your baby via one bottle or another can cause more frequent regurgitation for your baby and therefore lead to discomfort and dif-ficult nights . When your child completes all his bottles and you have the impression that he is still hungry, then you can increase his bottles to 30ml + a scoop of formula .

Icangivewholeorskincowmilktomychildwhenhereachestheageofoneyear.

Infants of one year maintain specific nutritional needs that cannot be met by regular cow milk .

It is recommended to continue to use follow-on formula (2nd age) until the child reaches at least 18 months . Ordinary cow’s milk can be given at the earliest at the age of 18 months, but ideally after 3 years .

Nowthatmychildis2yearsold,Ishouldofferhimmilkinaglass.

It is around the ages of 15 to 18 months that you can stop giving your baby bottles, but milk will stay important . This is the age to begin to give milk in something other than a bottle . He already knows to drink water out of a glass . You can choose to give your baby milk in a cup or a glass; he will be able to drink either .

With a balanced diet, dairy products are given in forms other than milk (yogurt, cheese,…) and the quantity of milk given can therefore be reduced . The worry with continuing to give your baby bottles of milk is that he risks consuming too much milk in the place of other important nutrients for his health (breads, fruits,…) .

IcangivemybabythesamesoymilkwhichIdrink.

There are some soy-based infant formulas which are suitable for your baby because they contain essential nutrients for his growth .

Actually, it is recommended to avoid soy milk before the age of 6 months for reasons concerning its high content of phytoestrogen (a substance that related to the female hormone estrogen, which may cause hormonal disturbances) .

For any further questions, do not hesitate to contact your doctor or one of ONE’s social workers .
