DHBs have a central role in ensuring New Zealand has a high quality workforce to deliver our health services.

DHBs’ partnership, cooperation and involvement in training are critical to the successful planning and development of the New Zealand health workforce.

Strengthening our workforce

HWNZ expects that in 2016/17 DHBs will:

• Continue to focus upon ensuring a sustainable future workforce based upon workforce planning at the individual, regional and national levels.

Additionally:

• Ensure local DHB and regional leadership development activities are consistent with the national leadership domains Framework, approved by DHB CEOs in October 2015.

Planning Priorities and Requirements – Annual and Regional Service Plans

Health Workforce New Zealand will work with DHBs, through the Regional Workforce Development Directors to:

• Facilitate regionally-based solutions to address national workforce priorities, enabling :o Implementation of community-based attachments for

prevocational traineeso Increasing participation of Maori and Pacific in the health

workforceo Implementation of the Children’s Action Plano Recruitment of new palliative care specialist nurses and

educatorso Support for the role of nurse practitioners, clinical nurse

specialists and nurses performing endoscopieso Support for the training of sonographers and medical

physicists5

Planning Priorities – cont.

• Identify and progress a regionally co-ordinated approach to 'new models of care', planning and development

• Demonstrate leadership and commitment that supports the development of the region’s health workforce

• Strengthen local and regional health workforce intelligence

• Build on the 2015/16 RSP demonstrating further progress on actions to meet milestones.
