PREPARE YOUR CLUB – GUIDANCE FOR SHINTY CLUBS
CORONAVIRUS (COVID 19) SHINTY’S ROUTE MAP
03/07/20
PREPARE YOUR CLUB
The purpose of this guidance is to provide a framework of support for our member clubs and
associations to interpret Scottish Government Guidance on Coronavirus in relation to our
sport. Shinty’s phased exit from lockdown will be released phase by phase in line with Scottish
Government guidance and phases. The steps we take are focused on protecting the health
and wellbeing of our communities in line with Scottish Government Guidance. In the first
instance our focus is on preparing our clubs. No shinty is permitted at this time.
PHASE 2 GUIDANCE Update – PREPARE YOUR CLUB
Each individual and each member club has a duty of care to ensure they understand the
guidance provided. Implementation of this guidance is vital for the protection of our sport
and our communities. We encourage every member and friend of shinty to focus on zero
transmission by following government guidelines at all times.
It must be stressed that an easing of lockdown does not mean a return to normal, and we
urge everyone to be mindful of how their individual actions reflect on their community. The
key will be for individuals to take a sensible approach to their activities, use their judgement
to manage and mitigate the risks, and to consider the social responsibility we all have to each
other, to protecting our emergency services and to minimise the transmission of COVID -19.
It is the Camanachd Association position to implement a phased return to our sport aligned
to the Scottish Government route map and given the contact nature of our sport the first
steps will be focused on following the extension to exercise as prescribed by Scottish
Government and focusing on the preparation of your club to be ready for hosting members
at a date to be confirmed in a future phase providing your club have completed the readiness
checklist and appropriate insurance is in place.
This guidance is subject to change and updates as further information becomes available. This
Shinty route map applies to shinty at all ages and stages and for male and female clubs under
the umbrella of the Camanachd Association in Scotland.
At this time we are focusing on club preparation to ensure our clubs are ready to host activity
safely when Scottish Government confirm it is safe to do so. On an individual family basis we
would encourage you to maximise the opportunity to follow the government
recommendations to be physically active and exercise in your household group (where social
distancing is not required) or with 8 people from a maximum of two different households
under social distancing guidelines.
As a sport our main concern is the safety of our members and the wider public. To this end
we will follow Government advice and ask that your facilities remain closed during this phase
and that no formal club activity is undertaken.
People who are shielding are now permitted to undertake activities providing strict physical
distancing is adhered to.
People who are symptomatic should self-isolate for 7 days; household members for 14 days
as per info on NHS guidance. No one who is self-isolating should attend an outdoor sports
facility/activity.
Clubs and participants should be aware that the easing of restrictions does not mean that facilities/venues will open immediately. Owners and operators will require time to consider all the implications of opening facilities/venues and put plans in place to set up operations that ensure the safety of participants, staff and volunteers. This is a difficult time for everyone so please be patient.
Scottish Government Guidelines
All clubs and members are advised to follow all advice from the Scottish Government in
relation to Coronavirus. Further information can be found below www.gov.scot/coronavirus
Approval Phase 2 has been compiled in conjunction with Scottish Government guidance as of 3rd July 2020. During Scottish Governments Phase 2 the Camanachd Association are asking all clubs to liaise with their Regional Development Team member to prepare their club and ready themselves for a future return to the sport (at a date yet to be determined)

General guidance;
• The club committee or venue operator should ensure all appropriate management processes are in place to oversee and maintain the implementation of measures outlined herein. Venues are advised to take time to ensure they reopen safely.
• It is the responsibility of each venue, club and deliverer to undertake documented risk assessment, based on their local circumstances, prior to activity taking place. Consider safety first, particularly focusing on minimising the risk of infection/transmission. Appropriate measures must be put in place to ensure participants, staff and volunteers are always protected.
• Outdoor hospitality, including catering and bar services can reopen from 6th July 2020 providing they adhere to Scottish Government guidance. Further information is available at Scottish Government: Tourism and Hospitality Guidance
• Clubs should check with their insurance company that correct and full insurance cover is in place and valid before any activity takes place. Phase 2 and no organised Club Shinty activity
• sportscotland has produced the Getting your Facilities Fit for Sport guidance to help
owners and operators of sports facilities as they prepare for when sport/activity

19 routemap and can be adapted to support other planning-based work being
undertaken by sports, clubs and community organisations

should remain closed to the public. While we understand this delays the ability of our
facilities to reopen fully.
• Sports facility operators and clubs may now open toilets for public use if they follow the guidelines outlined on the Scottish Government website Opening Public Toilets Guidelines .

Facilities Fit for Sport
• Outdoor group training or play is not permitted other than where it meets specific
Professional & Performance Sport Resumption Guidance
• Activity or exercise undertaken in sports areas, courts and pitches must fully comply
with Scottish Government household, physical distancing and travel guidance with
appropriate hygiene and safety measures also in place.
Health, Safety & Hygiene
• Ensure access to first aid and emergency equipment is maintained. Where equipment is stored indoors please ensure public access to indoor areas is restricted as much as possible with hygiene and safety protocols reviewed as part of the risk assessment.
• Please ensure the first aid equipment has been updated appropriately for the COVID pandemic and first aiders have undertaken appropriate additional training.
• Cleaning of equipment, hand and respiratory hygiene are core measures to be implemented and provision should be made for these.
• Clear guidance and plans are needed for cleaning of facilities and equipment, and waste disposal. For instance, common touchpoint surfaces (gates, door handles, handrails etc) should where possible be left open but if not possible, regular cleaning with disposable gloves should be undertaken.
• Make hand sanitizers or wipes available for use at entrance/exit to venue/facility where possible. Hand sanitiser should be at least 60% alcohol based and detergent wipes appropriate for the surface they are being used on. Cleaning products should conform to EN14476 standards. For example a ‘Milton’ product that meets this standard.
• A checklist for health, hygiene and cleaning considerations and actions is available here: Getting your Facilities Fit for Sport
• Further guidance is available at;
• Health Protection Scotland: General guidance for non-healthcare settings
• Health Protection Scotland: Cleaning in a non-healthcare setting
• Health Protection Scotland: Hand hygiene techniques
• St. John's Ambulance: Covid-19 advice for first aiders
• Clubs and venue operators should, where possible, remove equipment including
benches, scoreboards, tables and any other objects that are not essential for
participation purposes.
• Where the above is not possible appropriate cleaning measures, including provision of
sanitiser and disposable gloves, should be put in place to reduce the risk of
contamination.
• Bins may be provided but should be regularly checked, cleaned/sanitised, emptied and
disposed of using appropriate personal protective equipment.
• All fixed equipment should be checked prior to use to avoid participants having to
adjust or touch it.
• Where shared equipment is necessary for an activity appropriate hygiene measures
must be put in place to ensure the equipment is thoroughly cleaned before, during and
after use.
• No personal equipment should be left at a facility by a participant once the activity has
ended.
• Where balls are used in sports areas, courts and pitches (after 29 June 2020) a risk
assessment should be undertaken to ensure measures are put in place to minimise
uncovered body contact. Appropriate hygiene protocols should be undertaken
including hand hygiene and regular cleaning of balls before, during and after exercise.
• Hand sanitiser should be at least 60% alcohol based and detergent wipes are
appropriate for the surface they are being used on. Cleaning products should conform
to EN14476 standard or any detergent is followed by chlorine releasing agent.
• Where appropriate bookings and payment
- Online bookings should be taken if possible. If not, alterative measures should be
put in place including phone bookings to arrange training for teams.
- Where possible and in line with Data Protection regulations, a register of users
should be kept in case there is a need to track and trace.
- Consider introducing buffer periods between sessions to stagger start times so that
participants do not all arrive/leave at the same time.
- Where possible use online or contactless payment options and avoid handling
cash.
Communication with members/community
• Clubs should communicate clearly and regularly with members and participants setting out what they are doing to manage risk, and what advice they are giving to individuals before, during and after visits to the venue/activity.
• Make them aware in advance of measures you are putting in place at your venue, and
guidelines they are asked to follow.
• Ideally clubs should publish an action plan detailing their plans to re-open safely.
• Communicate clearly opening times and how people can safely access a facility when
it is safe to do so and if relevant, for example through a booking or queuing system.
• It is more important than ever to consider inclusive guidance for people who need
support to be active and clubs should consider this as part of their work to encourage
even more people to return to shinty or continue physical activity.
• Ensure signage is prepared and placed strategically highlighting guidelines for
participating safely and promoting hygiene measures are clearly displayed and up to
date.
Workforce
• Clubs and venue operators must ensure that relevant workplace guidance is followed
for contractors and staff and ensure existing health and safety advice is maintained
and aligned. This should be detailed in the risk assessment.
Coaching, Instructing and Personal Training
• Currently no member is insured therefore no formal shinty coaching is permitted or
should take place at this time. Please continue to follow Scottish Government
Guidance on exercise and work with your club to ready themselves for a return at a
later date
• Guidance for coaches, leaders, personal trainers, and instructors preparing for Phase
3 is available at Getting your coaches ready for sport .
• Coaches and instructors who will be working with children should familiarise themselves with the additional considerations developed by Children 1st: Child Wellbeing and Protection Considerations .
Competitions
• No formal shinty competition is permitted at this time
• The initial focus during this phase should be on facilitating recreational and social play,
and letting participants practice and exercise in line with Scottish Government
recommendations for exercise. It is not yet a return to sport.
• Some formats of competition will be able to resume before others and updates will be
provided at the appropriate phase.
• When a safe start date has been identified by Scottish Government to restart contact
sports the Camanachd Association will consult all clubs relating to their desire to take
part.
• If Scottish Government progress through the phased lifting of lockdown and confirm it
is safe to return to contact sport later in 2020 the Camanachd Association will consult
all clubs on their desire to participate in localised Mini leagues for youths and adults
depending on the time that may be available. Consultation will be carried out to ensure
we progress through this challenging period together and move forward as one. If your
club wish to share any ideas or input into these plans please contact your local
Regional Development Team member.
