8 Exponential Trends That Will Shape Humanity

Prepare for Hyper-Local Manufacturing:
The Rise of 3D Printing
“With 3-D printers, the cost of manufacturing complexity goes to zero,” …
“Complexity is now free.”
We live in a time of great abundance and unparalleled possibilities fueled by
exponential growth from the impact of technology. Our job at sparks & honey is to
understand the accelerators, balancers and patterns that are driving exponential cultural
change in the near term and foreseeable future. Our team of cultural strategists and
curators works with leading brands and thought leaders to apply these trends and use them
as a catalyst for disruptive innovation.
We eat culture for breakfast in order to understand the value of emerging fringe signals,
cultural shifts and explosive doubling patterns. While monitoring thousands of inputs
and mapping and scoring them, we have identified 8 rapidly accelerating trends that will
shape institutions, governments, businesses and everyday consumers.
We have consolidated these trends into short vignettes, in order to share a curated snapshot
of what will either create great opportunities or unexpected challenges. We will cover
these trends over the next few months. This report covers 3D Printing. We hope you engage
us in the debate and exploration of how these exponential trends will shape your business
and the World.
Please enjoy and share this fourth in a series of eight free reports. The discussion will also
continue in our core social channels - @sparksandhoney, www.bigthink/blogs/amped and
www.facebook.com/sparksandhoney.
Our blind spot comes from the fact that we have lived in a linear world.
But today’s changes are exponential.

Prepare for Hyper-Local Manufacturing:The Rise of 3D Printing
Affordable 3D printing is ushering in a new era of localized, consumer-centric manufacturing.
No longer just a geeky hobby or the domain of expensive rapid prototyping systems, the technology is allowing customized, on demand production to become a reality.

Everyone Becomes a Producer: As the price of 3D printers continue to drop and makerspaces and local manufacturing operations proliferate, we will witness a massive disruption of the manufacturing status quo.

Bringing the Factories Home: Within the next five years, the United States is expected to experience a manufacturing renaissance as the wage gap with China shrinks and certain U.S. states become some of the cheapest locations for manufacturing in the developed world.

On-Demand Personal Clothing: Designers are crafting on-demand custom apparel and shoes that can be tailored to the customerʼs unique needs.

Custom Medical Devices: Everything from facial prosthetics to synthetic tissues to bone replacements are now able to be created via 3D printer.

Lab Grown Meat and Leather: Startup Modern Meadows is pioneering the technique of bioprinting, with the aim of creating ethical and sustainable animal products.

An Explosion of New Materials: As additive manufacturing evolves, the price of production decreases, speed increases and an expanded palette of new materials such as plastic, metal, wood, sand and stone will be used.
3D printing
Prepare for Hyper-Local Manufacturing: More goods will be created on-demand at or close to their point of purchase (think: vending machine publishing). Household-level production will be possible for many items, and at-home spare part production will likely change the DIY industry. This will fuel Americaʼs “just in time” on-demand customized culture, and impact expectations from brands.
Crowd-Sourced Distribution Channels: As individuals become manufacturers and more “stuff” is created on a small scale, there will be different distribution requirements to get the “stuff” to the end user. Plan for crowd-sourced distribution systems to arise taking advantage of existing networks and peopleʼs movements. Marketers may find these new channels useful for their products and/or be compelled to create and manage new channels.
Assume New Materials Will Have Mass Appeal: Anticipate consumersʼ growing interest in material innovation (i.e., what is it made of? how was it made?) and the introduction of “smart” 3D printer materials (think: materials with memory). Expect 3D printers to differentiate with their materials, and concurrently an increase in ingredient branding (think: made with Lycra). Average Americans will have demand for raw materials to feed into their 3D printers. Overall, there will be more pressure put on brands to disclose their ingredients and raw materials, and to lower their carbon footprint.
Donʼt Stop Upgrading- 4D Will Reinforce the Upgrade Mindset: Just as weʼve seen the upgrade from Hi-Def TV to 3D TV to 4D TV, Itʼs only a matter of time before 3D printing goes 4D (i.e., self assembling objects). Expect a technological leap in the next few years. While it will take some time for the trend to become mass, it will be a household technology in the near term. Marketers can prepare for this trend by imagining their brands in 3D and 4D, as an exercise.

3D Printer Material ManagerConsumers who print their own products on their 3D printers will want to recycle these products, creating demand for a refining and salvage industry just focused on 3D printer material scrap and recycling.
Job of the Future?
At sparks & honey we track and analyze thousands of cultural data sources in real time, incorporating live data feeds from numerous APIs as well as hundreds of offline sources. Using a proprietary Culture Mapping Platform, we monitor cultural bursts, identify clusters of activity and trends, score their energy levels, project their lifespans and analyze their cultural resonance. This intelligence helps brands understand and connect with popular culture in order to make more strategically informed business decisions.
Our platform incorporates three different frameworks to structure and contextualize raw data:

A mapping system used to model dynamic, interconnected webs of cultural activity.
The Energy Score is rated on a scale of 1-5. It reflects the speed of reach and volume of buzz, and incorporates a ranking of influencer activity that includes reach, resonance and relevance.
A unique set of attributes that describes the core concepts of each trend.
