Welcome back to Austin for the 79th Annual Meeting, April 23–27, 2014.We are delighted to be returning to this vibrant city for the meeting,during which there will be a broad array of papers, posters, forums, andworkshops. This year’s meeting will open with the President’s Forum “Publishing

Archaeology in the 21st Century.” Here, we will explore the opportunities and challenges thatface SAA, including digital publishing, the future of print, open access, and a variety of othertopics. I encourage all to attend.We have designed a number of events specifically with students in mind. New to the

Annual Meeting is the Speed Mentoring session. Continuing in Austin, there will also be theResume/CV Review for students and post-docs. The CRM Expo is back in Austin,highlighting the diversity of research and employment opportunities in the CRM field. The 79th Annual Meeting is returning to Austin. The conference willinclude more than 180 organized paper and poster sessions, more than 600papers and 400 posters in general sessions, and more than 20 forums. ThePresidential Forum, “Publishing Archaeology in the 21st Century,” willtake place on Wednesday from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, and the SAA Annual

Business Meeting and Awards Ceremony will take place on Friday at 5 pm. Sessions will runfrom 8 am until noon and from 1 pm to 5 pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday; from 6 pmuntil 10 pm on Thursday; and from 8 am until noon on Sunday. Badges will be necessary foradmission to conference events and meeting spaces. Aside from the conference, Austin boastsgood venues for music and feasting, and it has a vibrant urban bat colony. GUEST BADGES

Guest Badges were initiated for immedi-ate family members who are non-archae-ologists and who need access to themeeting venue as guests of meeting regis-trants. Guest badges are available only toimmediate family members of a regis-tered meeting attendee (assuming theguest is a non- archaeologist). Immediatefamily includes spouse/partner, parents,and children. Friends, colleagues, andother relatives are not eligible for guestbadges. The registrant must purchase aguest badge, which the guest must dis-play at the meeting venue. Guest badgessimply provide access to the meetingvenue. Guests are not “meeting atten-dees.” Guest badges will be availableboth through the advance and on-siteregistration process. SATURDAY, APRIL 26

Speed Mentoring—For StudentsThe Committee on the Status ofWomen in Archaeology (COSWA) willbe hosting a new student “Speed Men-toring” event during the 2014 AnnualMeeting. The purpose of this session isto allow students to explore differentcareer paths in the field of archaeologyby speaking directly with professionalsin varying fields, such as cultural

resource management, academia, labo-ratory studies, lithic analysis, etc.

All Students—undergraduate andgraduate, male and female—are invitedto take advantage of this opportunity.

Ten mentors will be available for con-sultation during this one-hour session,from 12 pm� –1 pm on Saturday, April26. Students will be allowed to sign upfor time slots with mentors of theirchoosing, and one to five students at atime will be able to speak with eachmentor. The student(s) will be given 10minutes, per mentor, to ask questions.If additional time is needed, mentorsand students can make plans to keep incontact. It is important that studentscome prepared with a list of questionsin order to maximize the limitedamount of time spent with each mentor.Mentors will be available to speak aboutcareers in academia, CRM, museums,and government, as well as talk to stu-dents about minority issues in anarchaeological career. Analytical special-ties represented will include botanical,faunal, and lithic analyses; GIS; andgeophysics.

Interested students will be able to signup to speak with up to six mentors dur-ing the one-hour period, but they canalso register to talk to fewer. Registra-tion is free! Walk-ins will also be accept-ed, as space allows. All participants areexpected to arrive at the event at noonto ensure that the 10-minute rotationsgo smoothly.

SAA’s Second Annual Meeting Student Day!Saturday morning has special program-ming designed to introduce students toarchaeology and the SAA. Students reg-istered for Student Day may attendexclusive morning activities, as well asany other annual meeting events includ-ed in the regular registration fee (orga-nized symposia, general sessions, postersessions, Exhibit Hall, etc.). Eventsinclude an archaeology career panel,hands-on archaeology activities, and atalk by Dr. Stephen Black on Texas

archaeology. Please note that any stu-dent registered for the full meeting mayalso attend any Student Day activity.

The first 100 high school students toregister attend for free. Rolfe Mandel (University ofKansas) and Alston Thoms (TexasA&M University) will lead a field tripto the Richard Beene archaeological site,next to the Medina River on the south

side of San Antonio. Extensive excava-tions have been conducted at the site,sampling well-stratified hunter-gatherercomponents ranging from Angostura toLate Prehistoric. Also, there are remainsof historic era structures and occupa-tions dating from the Spanish Colonialto the early Anglo-American andAfrican-American eras. In all, 20 dis-tinct prehistoric archaeological horizonswere excavated at the site. This makesRichard Beene one of only a handful ofsites in the United States to have a near-ly complete record of human occupa-tion spanning the last 10,000 years.Field-trip participants will take a short,easy walking tour to view multiplestratigraphic sections exposed in andadjacent to the excavation area. ThePresnal-Watson house, built in the1850s by slave labor, also will be on thetour.

La Belle/Bullock State History Museum Tour 9:00 am−12:00 pm; 22 persons maxi-mum; $49La Belle was a ship brought by theFrench explorer Robert Cavelier, Sieurde La Salle, in 1684 to establish acolony at the mouth on the MississippiRiver. La Salle missed the Mississippiand instead landed along the centralTexas coast. Two years later, La Belle waslost during a storm in Matagorda Bay.Archeologists from the Texas HistoricalCommission found the vessel in 1995and excavated it in 1996−1997 inside asteel cofferdam. Including lead shot andglass beads, more than one million arti-facts were recovered, essentially repre-senting a kit for building a colony in theNew World.This small group tour will visit the

Bullock Texas State History Museum inAustin to view artifacts recovered fromthe wreck. Dr. Jim Bruseth, the archae-ologist in charge of the excavation, willdiscuss the objects and provide informa-tion about what has been learned fromextensive analysis on the excavatedmaterials. There will be ample opportu-nity for discussion about the artifacts.The group will then go behind thescenes to view the timbers of La Belle,being stored for reassembly as part of a$7.8 million exhibition of the wreck.Dr. Bruseth will talk about what thearchaeological team has learned aboutthe hull and describe how it was con-served. Finally, a presentation will begiven about future plans to exhibit theshipwreck and associated artifacts in themuseum. The new exhibit will includethe reassembled hull with an approxi-mate reconstruction of the missing deckand masts, which will project upwardthree stories in the museum atrium.Artifacts will be exhibited around thehull, including several thousand in atwo-story display case, to illustrate thelarge quantities of supplies La Sallebrought with him.

Susan Snow, Arche-ologist with the San Antonio MissionsNational Historic Park, will summarizethe Spanish Colonial history of SanAntonio during the short (1 ½ hour)trip to the seventh largest city in theUnited States of America.Five frontier missions and the Pre-

sidio San Antonio de Béxar were estab-lished along the banks of the San Anto-nio River in the 1700s, representing theSpanish Crown’s effort to strengthen itsclaim to the North American territoriesand fend off intrusions by France andEngland. The success of the missions toacculturate and convert the native peo-ples was critical in achieving this goal.San Antonio de Valero—more com-monly known as “The Alamo”—wasthe first mission to be founded in SanAntonio, followed by missions San José,Concepción, San Juan, and Espada. SanAntonio’s very existence is very muchintertwined with its mission heritage.This tour will visit Mission San José

y San Miguel de Aguayo, often referredto as the “Queen of the Missions.” Mis-sion San José was founded in 1721 andmoved to its current location between1721 and 1724. It was originally madeof jacal construction, with a pueblo forthe indigenous people, in what wasknown as a traditional mission plan.Over time, the mission compound wasaltered and expanded to include a gran-ary, soldier’s quarters, a two-story con-vent, workshops, and a stone churchwith carved stone decorations, includ-ing the sacristy window known as the“Rose Window.” Regular services arestill held in the church while thegrounds are managed by the NationalPark Service.The tour also will visit Casa Navarro

State Historic Site, a property of theTexas Historical Commission (THC),and an important remnant of Tejanohistory. Casa Navarro served as the resi-dence of José Antonio Navarro, a ranch-er, merchant, land investor, and advo-

cate for Tejano rights who was bornduring the waning years of the eigh-teenth century (1795) and who lived aneventful life until his death in 1871.Navarro served in Texas legislaturesunder Mexico, the Republic of Texas,and the state of Texas and was one ofonly two native-born Texans to sign theTexas Declaration of Independence in1836. He also served on the committeesthat crafted the first two Texas constitu-tions in 1836 and 1845.The limestone, caliche block and

adobe structures at Casa Navarro werebuilt circa 1832–1855, and Navarromoved into the property soon after. Vis-itors will be treated to a guided tour byTHC staff of Navarro's original one-story, white-washed adobe and lime-stone house—a fine example of earlySan Antonio domestic architecture—and explore Navarro's historical contri-butions, stories, and legacies throughnew, multi-sensory, and hands-onexhibits.

Gault Site Tour9:00 am–4:00 pm; 53 persons maximum;$49 (includes box lunch)The Gault site (41BL323) is located inButtermilk Creek valley, approximately50 miles north from the ConventionCenter. Gault is situated in an ideal set-ting for hunter-gatherers/foragers: alongthe major ecotone between two expan-sive ecozones, the Gulf Coastal Plainand the Edwards Plateau. Locally, thissetting is particularly rich in diverseflora and fauna, quality tool stone(Edwards chert), and reliable springs. Intestimony to this richness of resources,every single interval in the regionalarchaeological chronology occurs atGault—meaning that even in theextremes of regional climatic oscillationsover the last 15,000 years or so, the siteoffered sufficient resources for humanoccupation. Regionally, prehistoric peo-ples never adopted horticulture becausethe climate has been highly variablefrom the annual to the millennial scales,producing an unfavorable environmentfor cultivation of tropical cultigens, but

also producing a diverse natural biotaable to support humans throughout theclimatic swings. This tour highlights thesite’s environmental setting.Gault is an extraordinary example of

that iconic site type of central Texas, theburned rock midden, so called becauseit contains large quantities of fire-cracked rocks. These midden sites usual-ly are highly visible on the landscapeand sometimes yield prolific numbers ofartifacts, leading to a long tradition ofcollecting and looting. Early in thenineteenth century, locals found Gaultto be exceptional in this regard, whichled to decades of unrelenting pot hunt-ing, seemingly destroying its scientificvalue. Visitors will see firsthand themidden and the extent of its distur-bance.The midden, consisting of anthro-

pogenic deposits of up to two metersthick and dating from ca. 9,000 to 500years B.P., was the target of looters for90 years. Investigations since 1991 havefound bits of the midden that escapeddestruction and also revealed fluvialdeposits—also up to two meters thick—beneath the midden, containing evi-dence of a long sequence of occupationsestimated to date from ca. 15,000 to9,000 years B.P. These older compo-nents range from Older-Than-Clovisthrough late Paleoindian intervals. Clo-vis and Older-Than-Clovis componentshave been the primary objectives of therecent excavations. Gault is the largestand most complex Clovis site known,and the cultural materials underlyingthe Clovis component are affording pre-liminary insights into the very earlyoccupations of the region. A three-meter-deep excavation block affordstour participants a view of an intact areaof the Holocene (Archaic) midden withunderlying deposits of Late Paleoindian,Clovis, and Older-Than-Clovis ages.Artifacts from the excavations also willbe on display. The tour will be led byDr. Michael Collins and members ofthe Gault School of ArchaeologicalResearch Staff.

Target Audience: Archaeologists whowant to learn how to perform Bayesianchronological modeling

This workshop will provide a series oflectures and practical exercises todemonstrate the archaeological applica-tions of Bayesian chronological model-ing. The Bayesian approach to chronol-ogy development is still highlyinnovative, despite being in regular usein England for more than a decade. It isrevolutionizing the way archaeology isbeing done and the interpretations pro-duced by allowing, in many cases, sitesto be discussed at the temporal level ofhuman generations. In the simplestterms, Bayesian statistics are used tocombine scientific dating from a sitewith archaeological sequencing andphasing. The analysis produces reduceddate ranges, and these results providethe framework within which new ormore complex questions of chronologyand temporality may be addressed.

This six-hour workshop will begin witha lecture about the history and philoso-phy behind Bayesian chronologicalmodeling in archaeology. This lecturewill also introduce workshop partici-pants to the types of archaeologicalproblems that can be modeled using aBayesian approach, while providing spe-cific model examples that form thebuilding blocks for models developedfrom more complex archaeology. Partic-ipants will then conduct an exercise tomodel the complete chronology of a sitewith archival data. Models created inthis exercise will allow participants tomodel the beginning and ending of thediscrete archaeological events that com-prise the site chronology. An overviewof how to publish models and resultswill be provided. Participants will thenuse their models to perform a secondexercise to demonstrate different typesof advanced analyses such as the incor-poration of the results of other modelsand calculation of the difference in

probability densities. The final sec-tion of this workshop will consist ofa Q&A data clinic for participantsto explore modeling possibilitieswith their own sets of radiocarbondata.

Takeaways from this workshopinclude:

This charming, historic Ger-man Texas town is where the NationalMuseum of the Pacific War, a world-class facility uniquely dedicated totelling the rich and compelling story ofthe Pacific theater battles of World WarII, is located. The National Museum ofthe Pacific War is one of 20 State His-toric Sites administered by the TexasHistorical Commission and preservesthe historic resources of the museum inpartnership with the Admiral NimitzFoundation.Tour participants will be treated to a

guided tour by the museum’s site man-ager, Joe Cavanaugh. On the way to themuseum, Cavanaugh will discuss thereasons behind the Japanese attack onPearl Harbor. Most general historybooks don’t provide much color ordetail, but it is a fascinating story withmany nuances. Upon arrival, the tourwill commence in the main gallery exhi-bition where George Santayana’s axiomis evident in very large type: “Thosewho cannot remember the past are con-demned to repeat it.” Cavanaugh willendeavor to lead the group through the30,000 square foot George BushGallery, a comprehensive look at theAllied campaign to defeat the Japanesein WWII. This is a multi-layered experi-ence designed to appeal to and withcontent for everyone.On the return trip, Cavanaugh will

address the factors that led to the deci-sion to drop the atomic bomb. Thegroup can engage in a Q&A dis-cussion about other facets of thistheater of the war, often givenless focus than the war inEurope.

The Military Archaeology ResourcesStewardship (MARS) interest group willbe touring Camp Mabry on Saturday,April 26, from 9:00 am until 12:45 pm.Founded in 1892 as a permanentencampment by Adjutant GeneralWoodford Haywood Mabry for theTexas Volunteer Guard, Camp Mabry isthe third oldest military installation inthe State of Texas. General Mabry suc-cessfully secured donations for the pur-chase and installation of the original 90-acre tract, donated by prominent Austinbusinessmen and Guardsmen andaccepted by Governor James S. Hogg onbehalf for the state of Texas. Today,Camp Mabry consists of 386 acres, witha National Register–listed historic dis-trict comprising 220 acres. A total of 72elements are found within the historicdistrict, with 37 contributing historicelements. These include both structuresand features, such as buildings, walk-ways, fences, pylons, and bridges. Joinus on the tour of this historic militaryinstallation and learn about the TexasNational Guard's Cultural ResourcesProgram.The trip will take place on an open
