Page 3: Preliminaries.ppt

1. X, a 2000 movie starring Jared Leto, Reese Witherspoon and Willem Dafoe, among others, is often considered the only movie of its kind to have been directed by a woman, Mary Harron. Based on a violent and sexually explicit novel published in 1991, X was deemed highly controversial and inappropriate. The open-ended ending of X was also of note, followed by the conclusion with an interior monologue we get to hear, occuring in the protagonist’s mind. In the S01E06 of Dexter, he used the above character’s name as an alias while purchasing drugs. Identify X.

7. The etymological origins of the word X are difficult to determine. It is commonly thought that Gerard introduced X, in connection with a belief held by local peasants, into print in her travelogue The Land Beyond the Forest. However, X had already appeared in an 1865 journal article by Wilhelm Schmidt. A common etymology suggests that X meant "not breathing", which appears to be attempting to read a derivative of the Latin verb spirare ("to breathe"). Identify X, immortalised just after the end of World War 1.
