Resources needed: Handouts (below) Scrap paper A few copies of The Giving Tree
Aim: By the end of this stage students will have warmed up to thetopic of friendship by brainstorming a list of words that directlyrelate to friendship.
Stage: Warm-up / Introduction Page:Time: 7 - 10 min
Method: Vocabulary Map In the middle of the board, draw a circle. Inside the circle
write the word Friendship Stemming off the large circle, draw 5 smaller circles. Inside
these circles write good friends, bad friends, childhoodfriendships, adult friendships, how to call people
Instruct students to draw the same Once they have finished, tell them theyll have 4 5 minutes
to brainstorm a list of adjectives (nouns for how to callpeople) that correspond to each subcategory
For example, good friends are loyal, kind, open-minded, etc.
After 4 5 minutes, get feedback from the students and writetheir words on the boardComments
Aim: By the end of this stage students will be familiar with a popularwestern childrens story about friendship.
Stage: Practice Page:Time: 10 - 15min Method: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.
Group students in 5s Handout a copy of The Giving Tree and allow a few
minutes for students to read through it Once everyone has finished, ask students, Is the boy a good
friend? Why/why not? Is the tree a good friend? Why/whynot?

Stage: Practice Page:Time: 15 - 20min Method: Giving advice to a stranger
Handout a small strip of paper to teach student Instruct them to write a problem (2 3 sentences) on the
paper. The problem should be one that theyve encounteredthemselves in the past. Students should be instructed NOT towrite their names
Once finished writing, they should fold the paper up and hand
it in to the teacher. Once all students have finished, the teacher will shuffle up the
paper. Each student should randomly draw out a problem. Group students. Students will discuss the random problem they chose and give
advice on it. Allow students to talk amongst themselves. As
