First TrimesterWeek 1—Week 12Body goes through

tremendous changes, mostly hormonally.

Tiredness, Swollen Breasts, Morning Sickness, Cravings, Mood Swings, Constipation, etc.

Baby in 1st Trimester (@ 4 weeks)

Brain and Spinal Cord are formedHeart Begins to formArm and Leg buds appearYour baby is now an EMBRYO and 1/25 inch long (a

pinhead)

Baby in 1st Trimester (@ 8 weeks)

Baby is now a FETUS

1 inch long, 1 ozBeginning to form:

forward◦Umbilical Cord

1 inch= a small paper clip

Second TrimesterWeek 13—Week

28Pains go away,

but you feel the physical changes:

Aches, stretch marks, patches of dark skin, numbing in hands, itchy, swelled ankles

Baby in 2nd Trimester (@ 16 weeks)

More of a complete skeleton is forming

Skin forms, you can see through it!

Meconium forms (1st bowel movement)

Starts doing sucking noises (a reflex)

4-5 inches long and 3 ounces (100 M& M’s)

4-5 inches = the long edge of an index card!!!

Baby in 2nd Trimester (20 weeks)

More active, fluttering feeling

Covered by fluffy hair called “Lanugo” which protects the skin

Eyebrows, eyelashes, and nails

Can hear and swallow

6 inches long and nine ounces

Baby in 2nd Trimester (@ 24 weeks)

Bone marrow makes blood cells

Taste buds form on tongue

Footprints and finger prints

Real hair grows Lungs form but don’t

work yet Baby sleeps and wakes If a girl- a lifetime of

eggs are formed If male- testicles form 12 inches long and 1 ½

pounds

Lanugo falls off15-17 inches

“Vernix” – a protective wax coating, gets thick

Body fat increase16-19 inches long

and about 6 ½ lb37 weeks is full

term! Organs ready to function on their own!
