Cutting-Edge Technology
The Preclinical Catheterization Laboratory Core is equipped
with a Seimens Axiom Artis fluoroscopic C-arm capable of
producing computerized tomography-like images known
as Dyna-CT®. These images can then be transferred to the
Siemens Syngo® workstation to produce 3-D images. The
3-D image can be used for subtracted and unsubtracted
contrast injected angiography as well as bone radiography.
The fluoroscopic unit is equipped with a large flat panel
detector which provides larger images during acquisitions
that are typically used in peripheral angiography.
Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory
The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory is used to perform procedures such as:
The laboratory is equipped with a conference room for didactic sessions and a large control room to view procedures away from the field of radiation.
Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory provides training in:
Experience
The Preclinical Catheterization Laboratory Core is managed and operated by Daryl Schulz, a registered radiographic technologist. Schulz has more than 25 years of cath lab and preclinical research experience, along with years of experience preparing protocols and budgets for preclinical studies. The core personnel perform many cardiovascular surgical procedures such as vessel access and cath lab surgical procedures, and have extensive experience operating simulators for cardiovascular surgery. The core members collaborate with the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center in conducting physician training programs and conferences.
Core Support
The Preclinical Catheterization Laboratory Core
is supported by the Houston Methodist Research
Institute’s Comparative Medicine Program.
The Comparative Medicine Program is approved
by AALAAC and provides veterinarian support for
all preclinical procedures. The program staff and
members of the core ensure that the preclinical
procedures meet or exceed the requirements
set forth by the prescribed guidances and
regulations.
