Precious industryWho we are
Empac (European Metal Packaging) brings together more than 200 companies involved in the manufacture and supply of rigid metal packaging together with their national associations to promote the benefits of metal packaging.
We are proactive on industry issues across this vital sector to ensure that stakeholders fully appreciate how metal packaging contributes to social, environmental and economic objectives demanded throughout the supply chain.
We support over 70,000 employees in 23 European countries using 5 million tonnes of metal to produce annually in excess of 70 billion units in steel and aluminium which reach consumers every day of the year.

We promote the metal packaging industry in Europe. We work on a wide range of challenges common to the industry and communicate to stakeholders including policymakers, retailers, customers and other partners on the industry’s contribution towards the sustainability of products and its versatility as a packaging material.
We develop sustainability thinking with our members, including position statements and future commitments. We provide them with information and support at a National and European level. We also share good manufacturing practice guidelines through technical committees of acknowledged experts.
We prepare common messages for the industry and create communication programmes, on behalf of our members, for a wide range of stakeholders.
Objectives• As an integral part of Metal Packaging Europe, Empac supports the industry aim to achieve an average European recycling rate of 80% by 2020 by working with relevant stakeholders; thus moving towards our vision of no metal packaging going to landfill.• Ensure metal packaging is recognised as the foremost packaging choice in Europe.• Ensure the metal packaging industry positively influences the regulatory agenda.• Ensure the metal packaging industry speaks consistently with one voice.
Our visionTo establish metal
packaging as a recognised and valuable contributor to
sustainability throughout the supply chain and
beyond.
What we do
Empac acts as a unified voice for the rigid metal packaging industry throughout Europe. We present the views of the industry, make recommendations and voice opinions on the social, environmental and economic issues affecting us.
Metal packaging solutions
Innovative can shapes and cutting edge designs are constantly being developed providing customers with stronger brand profiles and shelf differentiation.
Endless possibilitiesThe role of metal packaging
Metal packaging is found everywhere in modern daily life due to its versatility and universal consumer acceptance. Its sustainability credentials combined with the outstanding characteristics listed below make it an ideal packaging solution to meet the changing demands of society in the 21st century:
• Keeps content safe for longer• Prevents product waste• Keeps nutrients in and impurities out
4 Precious industry
Metal packaging with its extended shelf life provides protection against light, oxygen and bacteria and is an excellent solution for modern lifestyles. The can ensures products stay fresh until consumed contributing to value for money for consumers.
Metal continues to have immense potential for the development of innovative packaging solutions. The applications are unlimited, ranging from packs for chewing gum, microwaveable ready meals to aerosols and do-it-yourself (DIY) products. The solutions are continually being improved and refined to meet customer and consumer needs.
Today, metal is used for a vast range of products and packaging solutions, yet designers continue to seek new opportunities to delight consumers. Cans come in many shapes, sizes and decorations for:
• Food• Beverages• Lifestyle and luxury products• Personal hygiene• Household products• DIY• Industrial

Climate change results in unpredictable harvests. The can is the ideal packaging to capture and preserve products in the “good” years and thus balance production with consumer demand – a veritable food warehouse.
Infinitely recyclable... ...again and againA permanent material
Metal packaging is 100% recyclable, infinitely, without loss of its inherent properties. It is a permanently available resource that is widely recycled globally and one of the most recycled packaging materials in Europe3.Regardless of its form today, a metal product will come back as another metal product in the future. Metal can always be recovered, re-melted and turned into a variety of products and structures again and again – from a can to a bridge, to a bike and back to a can again. Thus, metal is a permanent material.
The industry vision is that no metal packaging should go to landfill in Europe. We aim to achieve an average European recycling rate for metal packaging of 80% by 2020. Due to metal’s unique properties and with the support of industry, policy makers and the public, this is achievable. Today a number of European countries have already achieved rates in excess of 90%.
• Metal is a permanent material• Metal is infinitely recyclable
Metal collection systems are simple and cost effective, and major investments have been made by the industry into recycling infrastructure. Its unique magnetic properties make steel packaging the easiest and most economical packaging material to sort and recover4.
The existence of an effective market driven scrap industry, combined with a long established infrastructure, means that metal recycling rates will continue to improve.

A sustainable solutionMetal packaging makes a valuable contribution to social, environmental and economic sustainability by protecting content for the consumer, preventing waste and enabling efficient business conduct.
Sustainability for the metal packaging industry is about managing resources and materials responsibly and supporting this by a continuous stream of innovative products and processes.
When talking about sustainability we focus on people, planet and performance. Our major focus points in these areas are:
• Equitable treatment and suitable employee training• Supply of products which benefit consumers• Continuous reduction of environmental impact • Provision of the safest possible products.
In order to better represent the benefits of recycling, Empac has developed an interactive scorecard which measures key aspects of environmental impact, including an average European carbon footprint. This informs stakeholders in a consistent manner of the strengths of metal packaging, including the undeniable benefits of reduced emissions and energy consumption through recycling.
Shaping the futureInnovative solutions
The metal packaging industry is progressive and forward looking. Its products have strong environmental credentials and exceptional protective qualities, which underpin its ongoing evolution and position as a leading packaging material.
Manufacturers and their research and development teams will continue to listen to consumers, whilst working in partnership with brand owners, to develop innovative and inspirational design solutions to meet consumer needs.
Empac is a driving force for the industry, representing producers and promoting the potential and versatility of this natural product for packaging.
