Theme ASO13 Logo

Theme Song Shine -

financially weak and needs loads of time to do part-time jobs. Since he is an architectural student and needs tons of money and time to make models in studio. And now He/she is presented with a chance to get into a hall. So he/she needs to choose between hall life, a possible chance of meeting loads of people and a possibly joyful hall life, or earning money rather than getting pocket money from parents. The theme of this booth will start at ‘Money’ 金錢. Scenario 5: The fifth scenario will be about friendship. The freshman has got a handful of new friends which he/she found useful when doing projects. Those friends urged him/her to a function which has serious time clash with the freshman’s secondary school friends gathering. He/she needs to choose which functions to go to. Page 39: Pre-Orientation Forum Booklet

39

l Inflating balloons Each group has to assign 3 freshmen to inflate 5 balloons. The faster group finishing the inflating process is the winner.

l Balloons battle Each group has to assign some freshmen to battle. They will put the blown balloons on their knees. During the battle, freshmen should step on the enemies’ balloons until the balloons blast. At the end of the battle, coordinators will count the balloons left. The group has most balloons left is the winner.

l Guess and draw The freshmen of each group should line up. Coordinators then tell the first freshmen a word or sentence. The mission of the freshmen is to pass the message to the end and tell the answer to coordinators. The first freshmen should draw a picture to express the message and the second one have to write the message in word then the third freshmen shall draw the message out until the message is passed to the end.

l Blind and drink

Each freshman has to use the black plastic bag to cover the eyes. Then, coordinators will set a line that the total volume of water should not exceed the line after the freshmen drink the water. Freshmen have to drink the water until they think the volume of water is near the line. The nearest group is the winner.

l Who are OC?

Page 40: Pre-Orientation Forum Booklet

40

The coordinator gives out a measuring unit like the ‘longest’ or the ‘biggest’ but without an object. Each team will send the person whom they consider to be most fitting with the description. Then the coordinator gives out the complete measuring requirement such as the longest hair and compares the group members who are being sent out to see who fit the description most.

l 報數 Teammates from two teams first sit in alternating pattern. The coordinator will ask the participants to give the multiples of a particular number and each participant will need to give a multiple in order. The one that fails to give the according multiple will lose.

The coordinator will set a nylon line in front of participants as a boundary not to be crossed. A candy will be put beyond the boundary and participants need to use their own method to pick the candy up. The group which uses the least time to finish picking up all candies will be the winner and each teammate must pick up at least one candy.

3. Rules

l The 8 groups will be divided into 4, and undergo the program in 4 different places. Two groups will compete with each other. 10 roles will be assigned by the coordinator to each freshman in a group, namely bomb, 1st class soldier, 2nd class soldier, 3rd class soldier, 4th class soldier, 5th class soldier, 6th class soldier, 7th class soldier, 8th class soldier and commander. The roles are similar to military ranking, from the highest 'Commander' to the lowest 'Bomb', It should be noted that when either person in a battle is 'Bomb' (the lowest rank), both of them will die immediately without mini-game. Whatever any roles battle with 'Bomb', both side died. The main principle is to make a higher rank role to kill a lower rank role in the other group. Each role possesses a particular mark, bomb contains 1 mark, 1st class soldier contains 2 mark and so on, commander contains 10 marks. The first round lasts for 2 hours and 15 minutes and the survivors of each side carries particular points. The group with a higher score by adding up the points of survived roles will win the round.

l During the battle, the freshman being chosen will pick another person in the other group to battle. Then exco will only announce whose rank is higher. Freshman with a higher rank (HRP) will need to win a mini-game in order to kill the lower rank person (LRP). The role of the person being killed will be revealed. If HRP loses in the mini-game, both of them will return to the team. If the two participants coming out are of the same rank, coordinator will inform them of this and they will return to the team. After first pair of battles, it is the other group's turn to send out a group member and battle again. Therefore, battles will be carried out in alternating order.

l Trial: Freshmen will not be informed of the roles of their own or the other group. Therefore each freshman will first submit a little paper to the coordinator, choosing 3 people in the other team to battle.

Page 41: Pre-Orientation Forum Booklet

41

Coordinator will only inform freshmen whether they can kill or to be killed by the people they chose. This session only serve as a chance for freshmen to try to figure out what role they are. A freshman being able to kill another person in this try out is considered as a win. The group with more wins in this session has the right to start real game first.

l Real war first round: The group that accumulates more wins in the trial has the priority to start the game and choose to send out a group member. The key of winning in this round is to have higher accumulation of marks according to the roles. For example, after the first round of real War, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd soldier of group A survive. For the group B, only commander survives. As commander possesses higher mark than the total marks of 1st, 2nd and 3rd, so group B wins in such situation.

l Real war second round: In second round, the game starts all over again with all the roles. Two different groups are competing with each other. This time the group wins as soon as it kills the Commander and Bomb of the other team. This round also lasts for 2 hours and 15 minutes. However, if the commander and bomb are not killed at the end of game, Exco will still use the same way as the first round to calculate the points of each group. So, at the end, there are two winning groups will survive. The group which used less time to win in second round will be considered as the winner in the whole program

4. Expected scenario l This program may clash the Hall interview. If there are some freshmen in a group have to leave for

the interview, the participants of that group will not as same as the other group. In this situation, if the number of participants of both groups is not equal, the coordinators will be substitute in the groups so that both groups have equal number of participants. If it is raining in the campsite, the venues will be moved to the living rooms. However, based on the limited room area, some mini games will not be held in the living room.

44

Expectation: 1. Some of the freshmen have no ideas or planning for their futures and don’t know what to do.

2. They are likely to know that the University provides variety opportunities for them, but they only know some general and common one such as becoming executive committee and applying internship.

3. Some specific and less common (services, etc.) can be told to them in the unspecified checkpoints. Freshmen will know that there are many other opportunities that they still don’t know.

4. Freshmen can get that through their active searching, they can explore a lot of opportunities, which may help to find out their goal.

5. At the end, freshmen will know that going to different checkpoints symbolizes that they try to learn about different aspects.

6. More importantly, they have to explore more to find out more opportunities.

Remarks:

1. The script and the position of the checkpoint should be clearly shown on the coordinators handbooks and ensure they understand the potential danger of the route (stated on the handbook)

2. The checkpoints are set up with lighting and the potential dangerous point of the route shall be lit. 3. The night program should mainly initiate freshmen to think about the possibilities they will face in

university life. To control the atmosphere, freshmen are not likely to be allowed to speak and should keep quiet.

4. To ensure safety , coordinators should stop freshmen from running 5. Some helpers should be responsible for patrolling the whole area 6. A small pack of first-aid material will be distribute to each group and the coordinators should report

to OC and exco if any accidents happen 7. The PIC of the night program will be responsible to clear all the checkpoint after the event 8. Format: This program will have at least ten checkpoints. They are representing different possibilities in the university, in this case activities. These checkpoints will let freshmen acknowledge more activities rather than those common one such as living in residential hall. Each checkpoint will be decorated and at least one coordinator is in charge of this checkpoint. a. Photos showing a particular object are given to freshmen. Each object is unique and representing

one freshman, i.e. pieces of puzzles. Freshmen are told that this puzzle is their own wishes and interests. They have to find out their own puzzles in the following journey. This symbolizes that the freshmen have to find their own wishes among the checkpoints representing their potential interests or wishes.

Page 45: Pre-Orientation Forum Booklet

45

b. Every group will have different starting checkpoint. Groups are brought to the assigned checkpoint by at least two coordinators. The coordinator-in-charge will give a speech which presents the possible picture of involving in this activity. The speeches in each checkpoint are aimed at acknowledging freshmen the new activities and giving them brief information.

After that, freshmen are told to remove their eyeshades. A box is placed in front of them. Those pieces of puzzles are already put in the box while freshmen are told to find their unique piece of puzzles in the box. However, at most two freshmen can find their puzzle in every checkpoint. Since each freshman will have a unique piece of puzzle, the list of freshmen that can find their own puzzles in this checkpoint can be figured out. A note of this list will be given to the coordinator-in-charge. The coordinator can delete the name and personal photo on the list after the freshmen could find the puzzle and leave this checkpoint. Those freshmen who cannot find their own puzzle have to decide their next checkpoint before they put on their eyeshades again. Those freshmen who have found their own puzzles have to be the “walking sticks” of remaining freshmen. c. Though out the journey, step 2 will be repeated until every freshman in the groups has found their

own puzzles. Furthermore, some of the freshmen may have more than one piece of puzzles which are of identical shapes. However, this will not be informed in advance. These freshmen will be told if they still haven’t attempted to find the extra puzzles. In this attempt, all the freshmen will be inspired that there would not be one and only one choice among all the possibilities.

d. After all the freshmen in one group have found their own puzzles, they will be told to merge all the puzzles they have found. They will find out that part of it is missing. Coordinators will tell them that the missing part will be on the top of Tai Mo Shan. Freshmen are asked if they would be willing to climb up there or go back to campsite. This action symbolizes that they should get out of their comfort-zone to find more possibilities.

e. After the freshmen reached the top of Tai Mo Shan, a coordinator will again give a speech which conclude the whole program and give them the remaining piece of puzzle. Then, they can go back to campsite quietly.

-50% of the total capital of the group -50% of the number of trials of booths by each group

1.3 Announcement of result Result will be announced in Cafeteria Old Beach right after barbeque. 2. Gaming system 2.1 Money system The initial capital of each group is given in the game of running and grabbing money from a box. They are required to use the capital to bid the plots and buildings specifically of different nature, play the booths and invite other groups to demonstrate cheer. 2.2 The determination of initial capital Location: Car park in the campsite Materials needed: banknotes, group flags, a non-transparent box, cheque Aims: To determine the initial capital Description: First, a freshman representing a group will run 50m to take their own group flag and return to their starting point. When the freshman arrives, another freshman will run about 30m to grab money by one hand from a non-transparent box. The box contains only $1000 notes. The notes grabbed by the freshmen will be counted by OC. The first three winners will receive a bonus of $1500, $1000, and $500 respectively. The initial capital will be the money grabbed and bonus received by the group. It will be presented as a ‘cheque’ given by OC Chair for the coming auction.

There are two plots of the same nature respectively. Elements in the dream city the freshmen build should correlate with the themes. The minimum price set for ‘Mixed city’ shall be higher than the others. The minimum price set for all city shall depend on the minimum initial capital among all groups. A renovation card, the instruction of program, map of campsite and surrounding areas, will be given in the end of the first auction for their reference. Freshmen will also be reminded that the second auction is about buildings with themes. 2.3.2 Second Auction: Selling special buildings Time: 1445-1515 Location: Car park in the campsite Materials needed: banknotes, group flags, and specialized buildings Description: There will be six buildings in the second auction of different nature with the use of different materials, belonging to the category of “Artistic city”, “Tranquil City” and “City of Life”. Each category has two buildings for biding so there will totally be six buildings. The purpose of the nature of plots is for regulating the types of buildings they can bid at the second auction. Groups can bid the building with corresponding nature. A minimum price of $3000 for each building is set. 2.4 Renovation system Two renovation cards are needed for allowing adding an additional nature into the plot, e.g. artistic etc. Each group is given a renovation card at the end of the first auction. Groups can obtain the other card either by playing challenging booth games as * as below or by performing better when demonstrating cheers with the other group. Groups with plots that are of mixed nature cannot upgrade their plots, i.e. cannot add more nature to their plots. For plots with only one nature, they can upgrade their plot with two renovation cards. They can choose one more nature to add into their plot. Obtaining renovation card at booths: every group can only obtain renovation cards from booths of higher difficulty as * as below. These booths will be indicated on the map. Each group has to pay $1000 for playing the booths. If the group succeeds in winning the game, the group will get the renovation card. If they lose, the group will not get the renovation card and they will lose that $1000. But the group will have one more chance in trying the game.

Page 53: Pre-Orientation Forum Booklet

Demonstrating cheers with another group: Demonstrating cheers with another group is another way to obtain renovation card. If one group wants to obtain one more renovation card, they have to invite another group to compete by demonstrating their respective cheers when the two groups meet each another. The group which initiates the demonstration of cheers has to pay $ 1000 to the opponent no matter the result of competition. One group will win if they can demonstrate their group cheers in a higher volume. It should be judged by coordinators nearby by an app, namely noise sniffer. The winner can get the renovation card of the opponent. No group can refuse the challenge unless they do not possess any renovation card. 2.5 Plots A land with different landscapes such as sea and mountain is divided into eight pieces. These pieces possess different natures: -City of Life x2 -Tranquil City x2 (with either a mountain or a lake on it) -Artistic City x2 -Mixed City x2 (groups can choose the two land uses they want to include into the plot) The minimum price of a plot shall be confirmed after knowing the least amount of money a group grabs during the determination of initial capital.
