Long Term Causes1.Sectionalism – different ideas and views on economic, political, social, and cultural issues within different sections of the United States2.Slavery - Northerners felt it was morally wrong and the South viewed it as a way of life necessary to maintain economic stability3.Westward Expansion – as the country expanded westward so did the idea of slavery4.States Rights – states felt that the people living in that state should have the right to decide to adopt or nullify federal laws in their state.
