PROJECT DESCRIPTION
2. INTRODUCTION
As the transparent variety iolite, it is often used as a gemstone the name "iolite" comes from the
Greek word for violet. It has also been called "water-sapphire" and "Vikings' Compass" because of
its usefulness in determining the direction of the sun on overcast days, the Vikings having used it
for this purpose.] This works by determining the direction of polarization of the sky overhead.
Light scattered by air molecules is polarized, and the direction of the polarization is at right angles
to a line to the sun, even when the sun's disk itself is obscured by dense fog or lies just below the
horizon. the main uses for this gemstone is ornamental jewelry, there are other uses that this
stone was used for including ceramic coatings for catalytic converters and as a polarizing filter.
Today, Iolite is creating buzz in the jewelry industry, because it is becoming very popular. It is very
affordable and looks great in many settings whether it is a ring, bracelet or earrings. The mining
of minerals is based on the competitive bidding for the project on the area of 52.795ha. The lease
area of 52.79 5 ha is of Non forest land. Mining will be carried out by manual method of open cast
mining.

3.59MT/annum of Iolite will be produced. Cost of the project is Rs.1.5cr.
2.2 NEED FOR THE PROJECT
Mineral resources reflect the potential of economic growth of the country. Our natural mineral
wealth has been exploited considerably during the past 50 years. With increase in
industrialization coupled with population growth, the demand for different minerals has
increased and is likely to grow further in years to come. This has resulted in irreversible impacts
on diminishing reserve, with simultaneous generation of solid wastes and effluents causing
environmental degradation. In order to mitigate the impact of mining on the environment, a
scientific assessment is a pre-requisite for framing sustainable development strategies. It is
therefore important to tackle the problem for control of pollution and mining of minerals in a
cost- effective method causing least damage to the ecosystem. In order to commence/enhance
production/ renewal of any mines, it is necessary to obtain Environmental Clearances from the
Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change (MoEF & CC), Govt. of India as per EIA
Notification 2006. Therefore, the implementation of scientific mining principles through EIA &
EMP plays a vital role in sustainable economic growth of our country.
ENVIRTA Sustainable Solution India Pvt. Ltd is QCI-NABET accredited consultant for study of
mining of minerals was assigned to conduct EIA study for the proposed project of Cordierite Schist
Ore mining (semi precious stone ) mineral at the village Bandoguda, Taluk Junagarh & District –
Kalahandi, Odisha.
The basic objective of the project is effective use of mineral in the country and /or region. With
the development and industrialization and enhanced the demand of Jewellery material in last 10-
15 years. Iolite is a natural birth stone it has physical and emotional healing energy it has uses in
medicine. It helps in economic growth of the state that will ultimately enhance the socio-
economic status of the people of the region / area. The production of minerals will benefit to the
state in the form of royalty, taxes and duties. Apart from this, the project will generate direct and
indirect employment opportunities to the tune of about 90 persons from the nearby villages. Also,
the mine management will conduct medical camps at regular interval in the nearby villages and
will help the nearby villages in providing infrastructure like school furniture, water tankers, etc.
2.3 DEMAND-SUPPLY GAP
In India Iolite gem is extensively used in Jewellery, meditation, treatment of ailments etc. Hence
with the advent of growth and development of mega infrastructural projects in the state of
Odisha, the demand of Gem is on a high-rise. The local region demand is increasing. Hence the
proposed project aims to fill the demand – supply gap through optimum allocation and excavation
of natural resources required to meet the demand effectively in the local region.
2.4 IMPORTS VS. INDIGENOUS PRODUCTION
Indigenous production of mineral will be used for economic growth of the country. No export is
envisaged of the mineral present. Domestic demand is very high to meet the requirement of
growing requirement.
2.5 EXPORT POSSIBILITY
The proposed project does not have prospects export possibility. Demand for domestic market is
very high and there is wide gap in supply and demand of minerals. Iolite mineral has direct
relation with the development of the economy of India. More extraction & exploration are
required for keeping high demand in domestic market.
2.6 DOMESTIC/ EXPORT MARKETS
In India iolite gem is extensively used in jewellery, medicine, meditation etc. Hence with the
advent of growth and development of such projects in the state of Odisha and in the adjoining
areas, the demand of gem is on a high-rise. The local region demand is increasing; hence newer
areas for iolite gem are approached and explored. Hence the proposed project aims to fill the

latitudes and meridians of 81.27 ‘E and 87.29 ‘E longitudes. It is bounded by the Bay of Bengal on
the east; Madhya Pradesh on the west and Andhra Pradesh on the south. It has a cost line of
about 450 kms. It extends over an area of 155,707 square kms. Accounting about 4.87 of the
total area of India. According to the 1991 census, it has a total population of 31,512,070. The
District has two distinct physiographic regions, the plane lands and the hilly tracts. The plan
region runs Southward up to Bhawanipatna and then Westward through Junagarh and
17
Dharmgarh and then further up to the boundary of the District. The plains cover about 59
percent of the total area of the District. The Hilly tracts are mostly located in the South Western
part of Bhawanipatna Subdivision. Some of the hilly regions are covered with dense forest.
4.3.1 Geology of the area
Regional Geology
Orissa, situated on the eastern seaboard of India is one of the gifted parts of the world, where a
gamut of mineral resources exist in bounty. The state is endowed with large reserves of bauxite,
china clay, chromite, coal, dolomite, fireclay, graphite, gemstones, iron ore, limestone,
manganese ore, mineral sand, nickel ore, pyrophylite and quartz. Recent discovery of diamond in
the Dharambandha area of Nuapada district by the State Directorate of Geology has added a
colored feather in the cap of the state. Other minerals of the state include copper ore, lead ore,
titanium bearing vanadiferous magnetite, talc/ soap stone and high magnesia igneous rocks.
Recent boom of the mineral industry has turned the state into a hotspot, with entrepreneurs
from all over the world crowding for their share of fortune. The rich mineral wealth of the state is
attributed to its favourable geological setup. Situated on the eastern fringe of the peninsular
India, Orissa has about 72.5% of the area occupied by Precambrian metamorphic rocks (of
Archaean and Proterozoic age) which host the majority of the minerals. The Gondwanas hosting
the coal resources occur over about 8% of the land mass. The Tertiary and Quaternary formations,
occupying rest of the area, provide avenues for aluminous/ nickeliferous laterite and heavy
minerals (in beach sand). The Archaean rocks in northern Orissa include the Supracrustal belts of
metasedimentary rocks including Iron Ore Super Group having deposits of iron, manganese, gold
and basemetals. These are also represented by the gneisses, granite, migmatite (Singhbhum,
Bonai and Mayurbhanj Plutons) and mafic/ ultramafic intrusives. These intrusives are associated
with the chromite, titaniferous vanadiferous magnetite and PGM. The Bastar cratonic complex of
Archaean age in the Western Orissa includes gneisses, granite, migmatite and Strontium-
Tantalum-Niobium bearing pegmatites
Local geology –
The applied ML area is fully covered by soil and alluvium. However within the existing clandestine
pits occurrence of gem variety iolite bearing cordierite schist is found in the colluvial zone. The
field investigation of the existing pits has established the local straight graphic sequence.
EXISTING LAND- USE PATTERN
The applied represents a flat terrain with gentle sloping topography, with an average height of
254m AMSL and lowest of 251.5m AMSL.
4.4.2 Power
18
Working will be confined in day shift only. No power will be required for mining activities

The total man power requirement for the project is 94
4.5 SOIL CLASSIFICATION
The district has five types of soils broadly classified as under:
The red laterite soil which is different in phosphorus and nitrogen is found all over the district.
Mostly under the feet hill and hillocks, in Bhawanipatna and Dharmgarh Tehsil occurrence of
heavy soil is common. It is rich in potassium and Nitrogen but poor in Phosphorus. Sandy loan soil
is seen in Lanjigarh and of the Bhawanipatna Tehsil. The area on the river bank of Udanti, Utei and
Sagada are alluvial sandy and sandy Loam spills. The fertility of soil in Dharmgarh and Jaipatna
Tehsil areas is high.
The red soil, black clay, sandy loam , yellow soils occur in the district with following percentages :
1. Red soil 31.68%
2. Black clay (heavy) 13.90%
3. Clay & sandy loam 54.44%
4.7 METEOROLOGICAL DATA
The climate of the District is of extreme type. It is dry except during monsoon. There are large
varieties of day and night temperature. The average annual rainfall of the district is 1378.20 mm.
The variation in the rainfall from year to year is not large. The monsoon starts late in June and
generally lasts up to September. 90% of the rainfall received from June to September .August is
the month with more number of rainy days. About 28% of rainfall is received during this month.
Drought is normal feature of this district. There are large variations in the day and night
temperature. The summer seaso9ns starts from the beginning of March. May is the hottest
month when the maximum temperature is about 45 C (82 degree F). The temperature drops
down with the onset of monsoon towards the second week of June and throughout the monsoon
the weather remains cool. December is the coldest month, as the mean daily minimum
temperature is recorded at 11 decree C. Relative humidity is generally higher from June to
December. It is lower (27%) in the non-monsoon months. During August, it is the highest i.e. 70%
and March is the month lowest when it is lowest 27%. Northern plateau (at 2150 MSL) of
Sunabeda in Komna Block of Nawapara district has a cooler climate so also The Rampur area (at
2700 Feet MSL).

ANALYSIS OF PROPOSAL
9.0 ANALYSIS OF PROPOSAL (FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS)
Proposal is analyzed for mining of semi precious stone in the area of 52.795ha in the village
Bandoguda, Tehsil Junagarh & Dist.- Kalahandi in Odisha with Standard procedure and rules.
The guideline from MoEF & CC will be followed in to in mining process and given as follows:
Dry pits will used for mining of minerals.
Mining will be in benches to avoid risk on life of laborers working in mining.
The mining area represents a flat terrain with gentle sloping topography with an average
of 254m AMSL and lowest of 251.5 m AMSL. The mineral extraction will be carried out at
300 days in year.
Mode of Working
For the optimum utilization of the mineral available in the lease area, mine working is planned
in a scientific and systematic way as shown in the working plan and section. The excavation
planning, slope, height, width and length of the bench are planned on the basis of deposit.
Since the deposit is very simple, shallow and the simple manual mining will be most suitable.
Development and Production Program for the first five years
Prior to start production of the area, some development program has to be completed
Maintenance and widening (9.0) of pre-existing roads leading to area will be ensured.
Erection of temporary site Office and two rest shelter shall be completed.
As per Metalliferous mine regulation 115(i) of 1961, barbed wire fencing all around
the mining/applied area will also be provided to avoid accident and inadvertent entry.
Mineral stacking yard of 15x37m with 0.1m high and 0.5m broad walls around, except
at two openings towards main service road will be constructed to avoid spreading and
any kind of leaching effect on the ground.
Risk of health and safety during mining will be taken care as per rule.
9.1 FINANCIAL AND SOCIAL BENEFITS
(Emphasis on the benefit to the local people including tribal population, if any in the
area)
The gems and jewellery sector has been one of the fastest-growing sectors in India in the
past few years. The sector has gained global popularity because of its talented craftsmen,
its superior practices in cutting and polishing fine diamonds and precious stones, and its
cost-efficiencies. The sector has been vital to the Indian economy as well; during 2008-09,
the sector accounted for around 13% of the country’s total exports.
26
The gems and Jewellery sector in India is engaged in sourcing, manufacturing, and
processing, which involves cutting, polishing and selling precious gemstones such as iolite,
other precious stones, gold, silver and platinum.
Iolite Jewellery is the most preferred form of Jewellery in demand in India as it is considered
auspicious to purchase iolite. Also, iolite plays very important role in medicine and
meditation and is considered as the safest investment option. Even though the iolite
demand remained weak, India continued to maintain its second position in the third
quarter-ended 2009 as well and accounted for 20.87% of the total iolite consumed all over
the world.
The gems and jewellery sector in India is highly export-oriented, labour-intensive and a
major contributor to the foreign exchange earnings; therefore, the Indian government has
declared the sector as a thrust area for export promotion.
Corporate Social Responsibility
As a corporate responsibility following measures along with budget provision is proposed for
improving the conditions of persons in and around the project area:

CHAPTER 10
SUMMARY & CONCLUSION
Cordierite typically occurs in contact or regional metamorphism of argillaceous rocks. It is
especially common in horn fels produced by contact metamorphism of politic rocks. Two common
metamorphic mineral assemblages include sillimanite-cordierite-spinel and cordierite-spinel-
plagioclase-orthopyroxene. Other associated minerals include garnet (cordierite-garnet-
sillimanitegneisses) and anthophyllite. Cordierite also occurs in some granites, pegmatites,
and norites in gabbroic magmas. Alteration products include mica, chlorite, and talc. Cordierite
occurs in the granite contact zone at Greevor Tin Mine in Cornwall. Catalytic converters are
commonly made from ceramics containing a large proportion of synthetic cordierite. The
manufacturing process deliberately aligns the cordierite crystals to make use of the very low
thermal expansion seen for one axis. This prevents thermal shock cracking from taking place
when the catalytic converter is used.
