19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried tothe lions’ den.

20 When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in ananguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has yourGod, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue youfrom the lions?”

21 Daniel answered, “May the king live forever!

22 My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of thelions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocentin his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you,Your Majesty.”

23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel outof the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, nowound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.

24 At the king’s command, the men who had falsely accusedDaniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den, alongwith their wives and children. And before they reached thefloor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed alltheir bones.

25 Then King Darius wrote to all the nations and peoples ofevery language in all the earth:“May you prosper greatly!

26 “I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom peoplemust fear and reverence the God of Daniel.“For he is the living God    and he endures forever;his kingdom will not be destroyed,    his dominion will never end.

27 He rescues and he saves;    he performs signs and wonders    in the heavens and on the earth.He has rescued Daniel    from the power of the lions.”

Psalm 29 Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings,    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;    worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.

 The voice of the Lord is over the waters;    the God of glory thunders,    the Lord thunders over the mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful;    the voice of the Lord is majestic. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;    the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon leap like a calf,    Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord strikes    with flashes of lightning. The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;    the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord twists the oaks    and strips the forests bare.And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;    the Lord is enthroned as King forever. The Lord gives strength to his people;    the Lord blesses his people with peace.

Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.     He makes me lie down in green pastures,he leads me beside quiet waters,     he refreshes my soul.He guides me along the right paths    for his name’s sake. Even though I walk    through the darkest valley,I will fear no evil,    for you are with me;your rod and your staff,    they comfort me. You prepare a table before me    in the presence of my enemies.You anoint my head with oil;    my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me    all the days of my life,and I will dwell in the house of the Lord    forever.

Prayer Before the Altar

Lord, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earthbelow—you who keep your covenant of love with yourservant who continues wholeheartedly in your way. Youhave kept your promise to your servant David my father;with your mouth you have promised and with your handyou have fulfilled it—as it is today.

The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you.How much less this altar I have built! Yet give attention toyour servant’s prayer and my plea for mercy, Lord my God.Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying inyour presence this day. May your eyes be open toward thisaltar night and day, this place of which you said, ‘My Nameshall be there,’ so that you will hear the prayer your servantprays toward this place. Hear the supplication of yourservant when I pray toward this place. Hear from heaven,your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive.

Page 10: Prayers (draft)

When anyone wrongs me and I take an oath and come andswear the oath before your altar, then hear from heavenand act. Judge between your servants, condemning theguilty by bringing down on their heads what they havedone, and vindicating the innocent by treating them inaccordance with their innocence.

When I have been defeated by an enemy because I havesinned against you, and when I turn back to you and givepraise to your name, praying and making supplication toyou in this altar, then hear from heaven and forgive mysin.

When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain becauseI have sinned against you, and when I pray toward thisplace and give praise to your name and turn from my sinbecause you have afflicted me, then hear from heaven andforgive the sin of your servant. Teach me the right way tolive, and send rain on the land you gave me for aninheritance.

When famine or plague comes to the land, or blight ormildew, locusts or grasshoppers, or when an enemybesieges me, whatever disaster or disease may come, andwhen a prayer or plea is made by me—being aware of theafflictions of my own heart, and spreading out my handstoward this temple—then hear from heaven, your dwellingplace. Forgive and act; deal with me according to all I do,since you know my heart (for you alone know everyhuman heart), so that I will fear you all the time I live.

Page 11: Prayers (draft)
Page 12: Prayers (draft)
Page 13: Prayers (draft)

When I go to war against my enemies, wherever yousend me, and when I pray to the Lord toward the altarI have built for your Name, then hear from heaven myprayer and my plea, and uphold my cause.

When I sin against you—for there is no one who doesnot sin—and you become angry with me and give meover to my enemies, who take me captive, far away ornear; and if I have a change of heart in the land whereI am held captive, and repent and plead with you inthe land of my captors and say, ‘I have sinned, I havedone wrong, I have acted wickedly’; and if I turn backto you with all my heart and soul in the land of myenemies who took me captive, and pray to you towardthe altar I have built for your Name; then fromheaven, your dwelling place, hear my prayer and myplea, and uphold my cause. Forgive all the offenses Ihave committed against you, and cause my captors toshow me mercy; for I am your servant and yourinheritance. May your eyes be open to your servant’splea, and may you listen to me whenever I cry out toyou. For you singled me out from all the nations of theworld to be your own inheritance.

Praise be to the LORD, who has given rest to me justas he promised. Not one word has failed of all the goodpromises he gave through his servant Moses. May the

LORD my God be with me as he was with myancestors; may he never leave me nor forsake me.

May he turn my heart to him, to walk in obedience tohim and keep his commands, decrees and laws. And

may these words of mine, which I have prayed beforethe LORD, be near to the LORD our God day andnight, that he may uphold the cause of his servant

according to each day’s need, so that all the peoples ofthe earth may know that the LORD is God and that

there is no other. And may my heart be fullycommitted to the LORD our God, to live by hisdecrees and obey his commands, as at this time.

Joel 2:2‐11Blow the trumpet in Zion;

sound the alarm on my holy hill.Let all who live in the land tremble,

for the day of the LORD is coming.It is close at hand—

a day of darkness and gloom,a day of clouds and blackness.

Like dawn spreading across the mountainsa large and mighty army comes,

such as never was in ancient timesnor ever will be in ages to come.

Before them fire devours,behind them a flame blazes.

Before them the land is like the garden of Eden,behind them, a desert waste—nothing escapes them.

They have the appearance of horses;they gallop along like cavalry.

With a noise like that of chariotsthey leap over the mountaintops,

like a crackling fire consuming stubble,like a mighty army drawn up for battle.

At the sight of them, nations are in anguish;every face turns pale.

They charge like warriors;they scale walls like soldiers.

They all march in line,not swerving from their course.

They do not jostle each other;each marches straight ahead.

They plunge through defenseswithout breaking ranks.

They rush upon the city;they run along the wall.

They climb into the houses;like thieves they enter through the windows.

Before them the earth shakes,the heavens tremble,

the sun and moon are darkened,and the stars no longer shine.

The LORD thundersat the head of his army;

his forces are beyond number,and mighty is the army that obeys his command.

The day of the LORD is great;it is dreadful.Who can endure it?

Page 16: Prayers (draft)

Psalm 58

Do you rulers indeed speak justly?Do you judge people with equity?

No, in your heart you devise injustice,and your hands mete out violence on the earth.

Even from birth the wicked go astray;from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.

Their venom is like the venom of a snake,like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,

that will not heed the tune of the charmer,however skillful the enchanter may be.

Break the teeth in their mouths, O God;LORD, tear out the fangs of those lions!

Let them vanish like water that flows away;when they draw the bow, let their arrows fall short.

May they be like a slug that melts away as it moves along,like a stillborn child that never sees the sun.

Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns—whether they be green or dry—the wicked will be swept away.

The righteous will be glad when they are avenged,when they dip their feet in the blood of the wicked.

Then people will say,“Surely the righteous still are rewarded;surely there is a God who judges the earth.”

Page 17: Prayers (draft)

Psalm 94The LORD is a God who avenges.

O God who avenges, shine forth.Rise up, Judge of the earth;

pay back to the proud what they deserve.How long, LORD, will the wicked,

how long will the wicked be jubilant?They pour out arrogant words;

all the evildoers are full of boasting.They crush your people, LORD;

they oppress your inheritance.They slay the widow and the foreigner;

they murder the fatherless.They say, “The LORD does not see;

the God of Jacob takes no notice.”Take notice, you senseless ones among the people;

you fools, when will you become wise?Does he who fashioned the ear not hear?

Does he who formed the eye not see?Does he who disciplines nations not punish?

Does he who teaches mankind lack knowledge?The LORD knows all human plans;

he knows that they are futile.Blessed is the one you discipline, LORD,

the one you teach from your law;you grant them relief from days of trouble,

till a pit is dug for the wicked.For the LORD will not reject his people;

he will never forsake his inheritance.Judgment will again be founded on righteousness,

and all the upright in heart will follow it.Who will rise up for me against the wicked?

Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?Unless the LORD had given me help,

I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.When I said, “My foot is slipping,”

your unfailing love, LORD, supported me.When anxiety was great within me,

your consolation brought me joy.Can a corrupt throne be allied with you—

a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?The wicked band together against the righteous

and condemn the innocent to death.But the LORD has become my fortress,

and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.He will repay them for their sins

and destroy them for their wickedness;the LORD our God will destroy them.

Page 18: Prayers (draft)

Psalm 146Praise the LORD.Praise the LORD, my soul.I will praise the LORD all my life;

I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.Do not put your trust in princes,

in human beings, who cannot save.When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;

on that very day their plans come to nothing.Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,

whose hope is in the LORD their God.He is the Maker of heaven and earth,

the sea, and everything in them—he remains faithful forever.

He upholds the cause of the oppressedand gives food to the hungry.

The LORD sets prisoners free,the LORD gives sight to the blind,

the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down,the LORD loves the righteous.

The LORD watches over the foreignerand sustains the fatherless and the widow,but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

The LORD reigns forever,your God, O Zion, for all generations.

Page 19: Prayers (draft)

Psalm 27The LORD is my light and my salvation—

whom shall I fear?The LORD is the stronghold of my life—

of whom shall I be afraid?When the wicked advance against me

to devour[a] me,it is my enemies and my foes

who will stumble and fall.Though an army besiege me,

my heart will not fear;though war break out against me,

even then I will be confident.One thing I ask from the LORD,

this only do I seek:that I may dwell in the house of the LORD

all the days of my life,to gaze on the beauty of the LORD

and to seek him in his temple.For in the day of trouble

he will keep me safe in his dwelling;he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent

and set me high upon a rock.Then my head will be exalted

above the enemies who surround me;at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy;

I will sing and make music to the LORD.Hear my voice when I call, LORD;

be merciful to me and answer me.My heart says of you, “Seek his face!”

Your face, LORD, I will seek.Do not hide your face from me,

do not turn your servant away in anger;you have been my helper.

Do not reject me or forsake me,God my Savior.

Though my father and mother forsake me,the LORD will receive me.

Teach me your way, LORD;lead me in a straight pathbecause of my oppressors.

Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes,for false witnesses rise up against me,spouting malicious accusations.

I remain confident of this:I will see the goodness of the LORDin the land of the living.

Wait for the LORD;be strong and take heartand wait for the LORD.
