Do you remember how you felt when you learned machines (cars, appliances, etc.) are intentionally built to break down?! After spending hard earned money you discover that in just a few years you will need to spend even more money to replace it – SHEESH! This, however, should not surprise us. For not only is this true of man-made things, but it’s also true of man himself. Solomon, wrote, “There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven – a time to give birth, and a time to die,” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2). Yet knowing this about ourselves (and others) does not make our ultimate demise easier, especially when death comes unexpectedly. We ask, “Why did God cause my [child, parent, spouse, friend, etc.] to die?” It never seems “fair”! While we know God created us to be mortal, we may wonder, “Why NOW?!” Sometimes the answer is people die because of their choices. We know that if we keep our tires until they are bald, they may go flat. And if we leave our car lights on, the battery will die. This is not obsolescence – but choices. Some choices that typically reduce a person’s lifespan include; smoking, drinking alcohol to excess, mountain climbing or base jumping, etc. Choices! People also may die because of the choices of others. Drivers who are DWI, criminals/terrorists who are bent on killing, etc., all can cause death “before someone’s time.” But if we make wise lifestyle choices, and strive to be aware of our surroundings, we may extend our personal life-expectancy. Yet eventually, unless Jesus comes first, we will all die. Knowing this, our best choice is to live in such a way we never have reason to fear death! See 2 Corinthians 5:10; 2 Peter 3:10-13; Revelation 20:15!
