December 2016 to February 2017

Foreword from Bishop JohnPeople use ‘straplines’ nowadays to describe what they are about. It’s not a very elegant term but if we were to have one in the Diocese of Worcester we couldn’t do better than ‘Thy Kingdom come’. That is the first thing that Jesus asks us to pray for and, in a sense, all other prayers are encapsulated in it.

We have pledged ourselves, as a diocese, to seek to fulfil our vocation to become Kingdom People who, in the power of the Holy Spirit, will take our part in God’s great plan to reconcile the whole creation to himself in Christ.

As I write this we are about to enter ‘Kingdom Season’. By the time you read it, it will be over but, as I see it, every season should be a Kingdom season. These next few months are set to be just that as our exciting Calling Young Disciples programme within our Kingdom People vision begins to be implemented.

Please pray that God will bless this programme and, more than that, will bless all our efforts to further the coming of the Kingdom. Please pray continually, and for all you are worth; ‘Thy Kingdom come’, remembering that God has promised to answer our prayers and is able to achieve more than we can ask or conceive.

to this latest edition of the prayer diary which starts right at the beginning of the new church year. As we continue to pray for all the parishes in the Diocese, this quarter we’re focusing on the deaneries of Malvern, Stourport and Martley and Worcester West.

We also pray for Bishops around the world using the Anglican Cycle of Prayer and the Porvoo prayer calendar (www.porvoochurches.org) – these are included in italics at the bottom of each day. Plus each month we pray for our overseas partners – the Diocese of Peru, the Diocese of Morogoro in Tanzania and the Evangelische Kirche in Mitteldeutschland (which includes Magdeburg in Eastern Germany).

Do let me know if you’ve got a story to feature on a Sunday in a future diary – the more notice you can give me the better! And if you (or someone you know) would like a large-print copy of this prayer diary, please email me on [email protected], or contact the Diocesan Office reception on 01905 20537.

Best wishes, Sam Setchell, Communications Officer

Sedgley Christmas Tree Festival

Over the first two weekends in December, All Saints’ Sedgley will be hosting its annual Christmas Tree Festival.

The event was started after a member of the congregation had seen a similar idea in a nearby village and thought All Saints’ could do their own. The festival aims to encourage people in the community and from further afield to come into church over the Christmas period and experience the warmth and joy of the season.

2016 will be the festival’s 8th year and the theme is ‘charities’, with each tree decorated to depict a different charity. Church and community organisations decorate the trees which are purchased with donations from local businesses and money raised from a quiz. There is also a ‘Tree of Memories’.

The Festival will open at 10am on Friday 2 December with a ‘Blessing of the Trees’, followed by singing from local school choirs. The church is then open from 10am – 4pm on the Fridays and Saturdays and 2-4pm on the Sundays. Admission is free, light refreshments will be available and any donations during the weekends will be given to the Salvation Army.

Please pray for all those involved in the Christmas Tree Festival at Sedgley, for all those who will visit and for everyone across the Diocese planning community events in the run up to Christmas.

Christmas peace & friendship party

Next Saturday an inclusive community event is being organised by St Martin’s Church, London Road in Worcester, in association with the Worcester Mosques and the Rotary Club of Worcester South.

The Christmas Peace and Friendship Party will be held in St Martin’s Parish Centre, where tea, coffee and soft drinks will be provided, and all will enjoy a

‘bring and share’ lunch. Children will be invited to make Christmas decorations which will then be taken over to the church to dress a Christmas tree to be added to the ‘Festival of Christmas Trees’.

The event is free and open to everyone, and there will be an opportunity to make donations to Worcester Foodbank - either money or Christmas goodies will be particularly welcome.

David Scott, who is organising the event along with Cllr Jabba Riaz, said: “Christmas is a family time for people of many different traditions, not just Christians, and it’s a good time to spread peace and friendship to all our neighbours. We’re hoping to bring together people from all our communities, including our Italian and Eastern European residents.”

This is the second year that this event has been held and the organisers hope to fill St Martin’s Parish Centre again with peace and friendship this Christmastide.

Calling Young Disciples

Calling Young Disciples is a project to help parishes better connect with children and young people

arising out of the Kingdom People vision. During research for Kingdom People, churches consistently maintained a need for help and support in this area of ministry and Calling Young Disciples is putting a team in place to enable this to happen.

The Revd Ruth Walker became Director of our Calling Young Disciples project in November. In this new role she will help recruit and support a team of ‘Mission Enablers’, who will work with parishes across the Diocese of Worcester to build on the work many are already doing with children and young people.

Ruth said: “Over the course of my ministry, I have increasingly focussed on working with schools and families. There is a real joy in seeing children and young people come to and grow in faith and I’m a firm believer that this is where we need to be putting our energies if we want our church to thrive in the future. It’s exciting to be at the start of this new project, to be able to help shape and grow the vision which has been embraced by the Diocese and see where it leads!”

Over the next few years, up to ten Mission Enablers will be recruited to be deployed in parishes. They will work with each parish for around a year, helping them to develop and strengthen their ministry with the children and young people in their communities.

Advent 3 Sunday 11 DECEMBER

Please pray for the Calling Young Disciples project as more team members are recruited and it begins to take shape.

Cathedral Crib service

For the third year running, the Crib Service on Christmas Eve at Worcester Cathedral will feature a live crib with real animals.

“A building of this size,” said the precentor, Michael Brierley, “requires as large a crib as possible. Life-size is currently the best that we can do.” A member of the cathedral staff kindly provides the sheep, and a member of the cathedral council kindly brings her donkey. “It’s a very special service,” continued Michael, “as important for children as a formal carol service is for adults, so we give it a lot of care and attention. People seem to come along after their final shopping on Christmas Eve, and get their Christmas off to the best possible start, by reminding themselves what it’s all about.”

“The Dean wondered about having camels as well. That’s a bit too Epiphany for me. However, I wouldn’t say no to an ox. If anyone knows of a well-behaved cow, perhaps they could be in touch!”

Please pray for the cathedral crib service and all crib services across the Diocese, that they might enable the Christmas story to come alive in new ways, especially for families who have not been to a crib service before.

Stourport Community Christmas Dinner

On Christmas Day 2015, St Michael’s Church welcomed 40 people for a wonderful turkey lunch with all the trimmings! The initial idea was born from a desire to offer hospitality to those who would be on their own on Christmas Day without the luxury of having their family around them.

The local Tesco store very generously donated all of the food from turkey and vegetables to gravy, Christmas pud and custard! Church members spread the word in the community and were absolutely amazed at the support received in so many different ways. Volunteers for the day, loans of equipment, gifts donated to give to the guests on Christmas Day poured in and there was wealth of support from people.

About 20 people booked their meal at the church and there was a fabulous bunch of volunteers who also enjoyed lunch, many of whom were on their own too. The age range was 5 – 92! Those people who attended made new friends and enjoyed a Christmas Day that they would not have experienced on their own.

The organisers said: “There are so many lovely memories of the whole day and it was probably the best thing we have ever been involved in! Having learned so much from this meal, we know we can make it even better this year and hope to find even more people who are on their own and would benefit from the lovely food and great company!”

Please pray for all those on their own on Christmas day and those giving up their time to ensure others are not.

Holy Innocents’ Church in Kidderminster has a tradition of a pre-Christmas festival with the church open to the community. This year however, they’ve decided to ‘ring the changes’ by opening the church next weekend with a bells theme to ‘ring out the old, ring in the new’ for New Year.

Plough Sunday

All Saints’ Hanley William are celebrating Plough Sunday today. Priest in Charge of Teme Valley South, Robert Barlow, explains:

“Plough Sunday, the Sunday after the feast of Epiphany or “Twelfth Night” marked the end of the mid-winter Christmas festivities. The twelve days of partying and celebrations finished. Plough Monday was back to work. But before work started, the plough (often a communal one for the whole village) was brought to church to pray for a blessing on it and the work it would do. After the service it was taken (often with dancing) round the village and villagers were invited to make contributions to the cost of its upkeep and the upkeep of the Church that had blessed it.

“At the 10.30 service at Hanley William a local farmer will bring a vintage tractor with a small plough attached. We will pray for the work of all the tractors of the farms of the villages. After the service we will follow the tractor and plough up the lane to the local pub for Sunday lunch. And we will hope for better fortune than last year when the tractor started to overheat and had to limp home as we went on to the pub!”

Please pray for all the plough Sunday services taking place today and for all the farmers across our diocese.

Stourport Prayer Shawl Ministry

A new prayer ministry has come to Stourport deanery connecting people’s faith, concern for others and the love of knitting / crocheting as a tangible expression of prayer.

St Michael’s & All Angels’ Stourport and St Bartholomew’s Areley Kings have a growing ‘Prayer Shawl and Square’ ministry within their churches. Items are knitted (or

crocheted) in an atmosphere of prayer, meditation & compassion before being blessed and given to those in need of prayer for sickness, anxiety or other trouble.

Pauline Wilkinson from Stourport tells of how the prayer shawls are making a difference to people: “Wrapped in the love of God and the prayers of his people, the shawls bring comfort; sometimes ease from pain and always the knowledge that they are not alone.”

Great is the need which is being realised by those trying to keep up with demand for the prayer squares which are mini prayer shawls, small enough to fit into a handbags or pockets. Kathryn Parkes from Areley Kings says: “Little did we know how they would fly out; so many have been knitted and blessed. I see it as a cover of prayer to all people”.

This ministry is growing as it finds its way into St Peter’s, Astley and churches along the Teme Valley, as well as into local hospices.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Later this year the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation will be commemorated across Europe.

The commemoration of the Reformation provides the backdrop for the 2017 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which runs from 18 - 25 January.

Prepared by the Council of Churches in Germany, the theme under the

heading Crossing Barriers is ‘Reconciliation - the love of Christ compels us,’ based on the Biblical text 2 Corinthians 5:14-20 and prompted by Pope Francis in his apostolic exhortation Evangelium Gaudium.

Epiphany 3 Sunday 22 JANUARY

Almighty God,

you sent your son Jesus Christ to reconcile the world to yourself.

We praise you because through your Gospel, in all parts of the earth a community of love has been gathered together, and that in every place your servants call upon your name.

May your Spirit awaken in every community a hunger and thirst for unity.

Amen

Kingdom Projects at Old Hill Church

Old Hill Church recently applied for and was awarded £1,000 from the Kingdom People Fund. The money will be put towards the Stepping Stones coffee mornings and the church’s ‘Tea and Toast’ initiative.

Stepping Stones was started by Community Outreach Worker, Linda Taylor who felt that God was pointing out a real need to bring people together, out of isolation, insecurity and loneliness. It meets once a month in the Church Hall, is open for anyone, and offers a place of love, friendship, belonging and welcome. Often people feel intimidated and scared at the thought of entering the door of a church, so Stepping Stones aims to be the first neutral step in coming to faith. The group offers prayer, support, signposting, visits and friendship and connections have started to be made with each other and the wider community. Some of the visitors have started attending one of the services at Old Hill.

Tea and Toast is an outreach ministry which meets each Monday during term time for two hours in the Community Flat in Addenbrooke Court, Old Hill. After working in the community flat for over a year, primarily with parents and young children, Julie Billingham and Irene Portman, community workers at Holy Trinity Old Hill, sensed God’s call to work with the lonely and marginalised. Anyone is welcome to drop in. Support is offered to people who feel overwhelmed by their life circumstances and the community workers share faith and encourage it to grow in the people they meet.

Both these projects aim to fulfil the mission statement of Holy Trinity to take the love of Jesus in action and words to ALL people.

Please pray for these projects at Old Hill Church, for opportunities to befriend and encourage people and enable them to be a friendly face in the community.

Bishop John leads visit to Peru

This month, Bishop John will be leading a small diocesan party to visit friends in our link diocese of Peru.

Bishop John last visited Peru in early 2012, and there have been major changes since then and since the last group visited in 2014, with three Peruvian bishops consecrated in July 2015 and an indigenous diocesan bishop in place since April last year. The aim of this visit is to strengthen relationships with the new diocesan

leadership and to discuss the direction the partnership might take in the future.

The group will travel around the Diocese, hopefully visiting at least three of the five areas of work: Lima, Arequipa and Chiclayo. Recent months have been a period of transition and although the Diocese of Peru is still struggling financially, real efforts are being made to encourage sustainability.

Those in the group who have visited before will be renewing old friendships, and will hopefully provide support and encouragement to the people of the Diocese and the projects they support. As always, there will also be many things to learn from the Peruvian hosts.

Bishop John said: “I’m very much looking forward to going to Peru again to visit our Christian sisters and brothers there. Our link is a precious one which I value greatly.”

Please pray for those travelling and for the people and projects they will be visiting, and for the life and work of the Diocese of Peru.

Home for Good in Worcester

From Joy Pollock, a member of All Saints in Worcester:“As a foster parent, there are two questions I get asked regularly. The first: ‘What made you foster?’ For me the seed was planted hearing someone talk about his experiences as a child being in and out of care. What he said he wanted was a clean home and regular hot meals. It was such a basic need - my house was clean-ish and we had a hot supper every single night. I could meet that need for a child. I then heard about ‘Home for Good’ one year at Spring Harvest.

Home for Good is a charity with a vision for a home for every child who needs one. In the UK, 4,000 children are waiting for adoption and 9,000 foster families are desperately needed. Home for Good believes that the Church can make a difference. It raises awareness of the need for foster and adoptive parents, encourages families to provide loving homes for children in care, and equips the Church to offer welcoming communities.

The charity works on the ground with collections of churches who have caught the vision to see vulnerable children’s lives changed. Here in Worcester, there are eight churches currently involved and we want that number to grow.

The second question I get asked most frequently is how can I give them up? Well, it’s very hard. But, children who have suffered loss, trauma and neglect need me to love them more than I need to protect my own feelings. And the support I have experienced from my church family at times of loss and stress has been such a blessing. Freezer meals, babysitting, chocolate, nappies, clothes and equipment at the start, and cards, flowers and even a spa day at the end of a placement have all characterised Christ’s love to me.”

Please pray for all those involved in fostering and adoption, particularly the many children whose lives are changed.

New Stewardship Officer

The Revd Alison Maddocks has just started as the new Stewardship Officer for the Diocese. Alison will work with parishes to help them think about their financial giving as part of their Christian discipleship.

Alison comes to Worcester from the Diocese of Derby where for the past five years she has been a Leadership Development Officer in the diocesan

office and vicar of Breadsall, a village two miles outside of Derby city centre. Prior to this Alison was a workplace chaplain in Nottingham and Birmingham and before ordination had 18 years’ experience working in the head office of Boots in Marketing and Personnel.

Alison said: “I’m really excited about this new post and further exploring the theology behind good stewardship. Discipleship in the everyday has been a strong part of my ministry to date and I’m looking forward to building on this. The Church has been slow to realise the changing nature of the world and the need to re-engage with the material as part of our worship. I’m looking forward to getting out and meeting people, finding out where they are and hearing their stories.”

Stewardship is an important part of the Kingdom People vision. Christian discipleship entails not only commitment to the life of prayer, to study of the scriptures and to receiving the sacrament in public worship, it also shapes what we do with our time, talents and money.

Alison moved to the Diocese in January with her two relatively grown-up daughters, husband and aged dog! The family love messing about in boats, as well as walking and are looking forward to having a whole new area to explore.

Please pray for Alison and her family as she starts this new role.
