ض في كل خفيكبر ملسو هيلع هللا ىلصرسول اهلل كان قال [ بن مسعود ] عن عبد اهلل وعمرورفع وقيام وقعود و أبو بكر

(الترمذي وأبو داود والنسائي)

‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud h said : “Rasulullah g used to

perform takbeer (say Allahu akbar) for every

bowing, rising, standing and sitting, and likewise Abu Bakr and ‘Umar k.”

ل أال أصلي بكم صالة رسو[ بن مسعود ] عن علقمة قال قال عبد اهلل مرةفصلى فلم يرفع يديه إال في أول ؟ ملسو هيلع هللا ىلصاهلل

Abdullah bin Masood h said: “Should I perform the

salah of Rasulullah g for you?” He then prayed and

raised his hands only in the first instance.

al-Bara` h narrated, “whenever Rasulullah g started

salah, he used to raise his hands close to his ears

and he would not repeat [this] thereafter”

كوع، ال يرفعهما، ما يرفع رأسه من الر(عوانةأبو )

Abdullah bin ‘Umar g said, “I saw Rasulullah g raise

his hands up to [his ear] when he started his

prayer” – according to some narrators: up to his

shoulders – “and when he proceeded to ruku’ and

after rising from ruku’, he did not raise them.”

Abdullah h said, “I prayed with Rasulullah g, Abu Bakr hand ‘Umar h. None of them raised their hands except

during the first takbeer, in the beginning of the Salah.

Asim bin Kulayb r narrated from his father that ‘Ali hused to raise his hands in the first takbeer of salah

and did not raise them thereafter.

Mujahid r said, “I prayed behind Ibn ‘Umar h and

he did not raise his hands except in the first

takbeer of salah.”

Ibrahim r said, “Abdullah bin Masood h would not

raise his hands in any part of the salah except in

the beginning.”

عن ابي إسحاق قال كان اصحاب عبداهلل واصحاب علي ال يرفعون أيديهم إال في افتتاح الصالة، قال وكيع ثم ال يعودون

Ishaq r said, “The students of ‘Abdullah and ‘Ali

would not raise their hands except in the

beginning of salah.”

Waki’ r further said, “they would not repeat it

thereafter.”

“There is no salah for the one who did not recite Fatihahal-Kitab and more”

الة إذا قمتم إلى الصقال ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص عن أبي موسى قال علمنا رسول اهلل فليؤمكم أحدكم وإذا قرأ اإلمام فأنصتوا

(مسلم)Abu Musa h said, “Rasulullah g taught us, ‘When you

stand for salah, one of you should be the Imam,

and when the Imam recites, all of you remain

silent’.”

(Sahih Muslim: 404)

راءة من كان له إمام فإن قراءة اإلمام له ق ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص رسول اهلل جابر قال عن (ابن ماجه)

Jabir h narrates that Rasulullah g said, “He who has an

imam, the recitation of the Imam is his recitation.”

‘Imran ibn Husain h said, “The Messenger of Allah gled us in Zuhr salah – or Asr – then said, ‘Which of

you recited [Surah al-A’laa] behind me?’ A man

replied, ‘ I did, but I did not intend anything but good by it.’ He g replied, ‘I realized that some of

you were disputing with me over it.’”

(Muslim, 398; Abu Dawood: 828,829; Nasai:917,918,1744)

بح صالة نظن أن بأصحابه ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص هريرة، يقول صلى النبي عن أبا ها الصي إني أقول ما ل "قال .قال رجل أنا ."هل قرأ منكم من أحد "فقال

أنازع القرآن (:897ماجه، ابن :919، النسائي:827 ,826، أبو داود:312، الترمذي:192الموطا)

Abu Hurairah h said, “The Prophet g led his companions

in a prayer, we think it was Fajr. [After the prayer] He gsaid, ‘Did any of you recite?’ A man replied, ‘I did.’ He g said, ‘I was thinking, why am I being disputed

in Quran.’”

اءة مع اإلمام ؟ سأل زيد بن ثابت عن القرأنه عن عطاء بن يسار أنه أخبره فقال ال قراءة مع اإلمام في شيء

Ataa ibn Yasar r asked Zaid ibn Thabit h about reciting

with the imam.

He replied, “There is no recitation with the imam

for anything”.

(Muslim:577; Nasai:960)

ذا صلى أن عبد اهلل بن عمر كان إذا سئل هل يقرأ أحد خلف اإلمام قال إقال أحدكم خلف اإلمام فحسبه قراءة اإلمام وإذا صلى وحده فليقرأ

وكان عبد اهلل بن عمر ال يقرأ خلف اإلمام (192الموطأ )

Abdullah ibn Umar h, when asked whether one should

recite behind the imam, used to say, “When one of you

prays behind the imam, the recitation of the imam

suffices him. When he prays alone, he should recite.” Abdullah ibn Umar h did not use to recite behind the

imam.

أم القرآن فلم من صلى ركعة لم يقرأ فيها ب: بن عبد اهلل يقول عن جابر يصل إال وراء اإلمام

Jabir ibn Abdullah h said, “The one who pray a single

rakat without reciting Umm al-Quran (Surah al-

Fatihah), he did not pray except behind the imam”

(Muwatta:187)

Ibn Masood hsaid, “Woe unto the one who recites

behind the imam. May his mouth be filled with

dust!”

من أدرك الركوع فقد أدرك الركعة: األصل A Basic Principle:

The one who caught the rukoo’ [with the imam] caught the rakat.

‘Ali h narrated, “My Beloved g prohibited me from

reciting while in rukoo’ or sajdah”.

Ibn Umar h narrated, “The Messenger of Allah gused to wear a white cap.”

Rukanah h said, “I heard the Prophet g say: ‘The

difference between us and the polytheists is that

we wear turbans over caps.’”

Aisha i narrated, “The Prophet g used to wear

eared caps while on journey and Shami ones while

at home.”

(Abu Shaikh in Akhlaq an-Nabi)

إذا دخل الخالء غطى رأسه ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص كان : عائشة رضي اهلل عنها قالتعن وإذا أتي أهله غطي رأسه

Aisha i said, “Whenever he g entered the

bathroom, he used to cover his head. Similarly,

when he would approach his family, he would cover

his head.”

Musa n spoke to His Lord, he had on a wool sheet, a

wool garment, a small wool cap, wool pants…”(Tirmizhi 1734)

turban with a topi underneath. He

would sometimes wear only a topi

Abu Hameed h narrated that the Prophet g,

‘used to straighten the toes [toward the

Qiblah]’.(Bukhari, in ta’leeq)

راء أقيموا صفوفكم فإني أراكم من و قال ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص عن أنس، عن النبي .ظهري

.أحدنا يلزق منكبه بمنكب صاحبه وقدمه بقدمه وكان ( 725البخاري)

Anas h narrated, the Prophet g said, “Straighten your rows, for I see you from behind me.”

Anas added, “Everyone of us used to put his shoulder with the shoulder of his companion and his foot with the foot of his companion.”

Anas h narrated, “Among the prophetic characteristics is

hastening the iftar, delaying the suhoor, and placing the

right hand on the left below the navel”.

Abu Hurairah h narrated that the Messenger of Allah gsaid, “When the imam says [the last ayah of Surah

al-Fatihah:] ghairil maghdhoobi ‘alaihim waladh

dhaalleen, say AAMEEN. He whose words coincide

with that of the angels will have all his past sins

forgiven.”

Abu Hurairah h narrated that the Messenger of Allah gsaid, “When the imam says [while rising from

rukoo’:] ‘sami’Allahu liman hamidah’, say ‘rabbana

lakal hamd’. He whose words coincide with that of

the angels will have all his past sins forgiven.”

Wa’il ibn Hujr h said, “The Messenger of Allah g led us

in salah. When he recited [the last ayah of Surah al-

Fatihah:] ghairil maghdhoobi ‘alaihim waladh

dhaalleen, he said AAMEEN silently and placed his

right [hand] on the left and turned for salam right and

left.”

Abu Wa’il r said, “Ali and Abdullah did not used to

recite Bismillah, Ta’awwuzh or Aameen aloud”.

When Samurah ibn Jundub r used to lead them (the

people) in salah, he would remain silent at two

instances, when he began salah and also when he

said ‘wa ladh dhaalleen’, for a little while. They objected to this, so he wrote to Ubay ibn Ka’b h. He

responded that what Samurah did is correct.”

Abu Hurairah h narrated that the Messenger of Allah gsaid, “The closest a slave ever is to his Lord, is

during sajdah. So, make abundant dua [in sajdah].”

Mu’awiyah ibn’l Hakam as-Sulami h narrated, in a lengthy

hadith, the Prophet g said, “Surely, salah is not the

proper place for common humanly speech. It is

rather meant for tasbeeh, takbeer and recitation of

the Quran.” ~ or as the Messenger of Allah (s) phrased it.

Abu Umamah h narrated that it was said, ‘O Messenger

of Allah g, which dua is most heard?’

He g replied, “In the last depths of the night and

after the fard salah.”

Fadl ibn’l Abbas h narrated, the Messenger of Allah gsaid, “The salah is in twos, you perform tashahhudafter every two rakat. You should humble yourself, show devotion, be destitute while raising your hands to your Lord – your palms towards face –and calling ‘O My Lord! O My Lord!’ He who does not do that is this-and-that.”

رأى رجال رافعا رأيت عبد اهلل بن الزبير و: وعن محمد بن أبي يحيى قال ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص رسول اهلل إن: يديه يدعو قبل أن يفرغ من صالته فلما فرغ منها قال

لم يكن يرفع يديه حتى يفرغ من صالته (، وابن أبي شيبة324رواه الطبراني )

Muhammad ibn Abi Yahya r said, “I saw Abdullah ibn az-

Zubair when he saw a man raise his hands for dua before

completing his salah. When he finished, he (Abdullah) said, ‘Surely, the Messenger of Allah g did not used to

raise his hands until he completed his salah’”

after every salah and said [the dua

mentioned] except that it becomes a duty

of Allah, the Exalted, not to return his

hands empty”

Al-Aswad al-Amiry r narrated from his father, “I prayed

Fajr with the Messenger of Allah g. When he

finished, he raised his hands and made dua”

Abdullah ibn Umar h said, “The Messenger of Allah

g used to raise his hands in dua and would not

lower them until he wiped his face with them.”

She replied, “Rasullullah g did not used to pray [tahajjud] more than 11 rakat in Ramadan or otherwise. He used to pray four – don’t ask me about the beauty or length of them – then he used to pray four [more] – don’t ask me about the beauty or length of them – then he used to pray three”

Abdullah ibn Abbas h narrated that he once slept [overnight at the house of] Rasullullah g. He g awoke, brushed (with miswak) and performed wudu while reciting (the last few ayat of Surah Aal-Imran)… He then stood and prayed two rakat and lengthened the qiyam, rukoo’ and sujood in them. He then went to back to sleep until he snored. He repeated this thrice [praying] six rakat [in total]…He then prayed three rakat Witr.

Sa’eed ibn’l Aas h asked Abdullah ibn Masood h, Abu Musa al-Ash’ari h and Huzhaifah h regarding the takbeerin Eid salah.

Huzhaifah said, “ask al-Ash’ari”, who in turn said, “ask Ibn Masood, as he is the most senior and most knowledgeable one of us.”

Ibn Masood h said, “He g used to perform 4 takbeer, then recite, then go to ruku with a takbeer. He would then stand in the second rakat and recite then perform 4 takbeer after recitation.

recitation. Thereafter, he used to perform 4 takbeer, one of

which would be for ruku’.

Ibraheem al-Nakha’I r narrated: The Messenger of Allâh ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص passed away and

the people were of different opinions regarding the takbeeraat of the janâzah… They remained in this state until Abu Bakr passed away.

When ‘Umar assumed responsibility of leadership, he saw the differences of

the people in this matter and it was unbearable for him. So he sent for some of the Companions of the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص and said to them, “O Companions of

Rasoolullah As long as you have differences, the people will continue to !ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص

differ after you. And when you come together (i.e. form ijmâ – consensus) on

a matter, the people after you will have a consensus. So look for a way to

come to a consensus in this matter.” And it was as if he had awakened them

and they said, “Yes! What do you think (about this matter), O Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen? Advise us!” ‘Umar said, “No, you must advise me, for truly I am

a man like you.” So the issue was turned to them and they came to consensus

that the takbeeraat of the janâ’iz should be as the takbeeraat of

the Adha and Fitr: four takbeeraat (i.e. including the takbeer-e-tahreemah, etc.).

Thus, this issue was settled with that consensus. (Sharh Ma’any al-Aathar:2846)

‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Auf h narrates that the Messenger of Allah g said, “Indeed, Allah, the Exalted and Almighty, has made the fast of Ramadan obligatory upon you and I have made the nightly prayers of Ramadan a Sunnah for you. So, whoever fasts in Ramadan and offers this prayer at night, with firm belief in the promises of Allah, seeking only to please Him, and hoping for reward, will be cleansed from his sins like the day his mother gave birth to him.”

The Mother of the Believers, ‘Aisha i, narrates that the Messenger of Allah g once prayed at night in the masjid and a group of people prayed with him. Then he prayed again the next night and the number of people praying with him increased. They gathered again the third or fourth night but he did not come out to [pray with] them. When the Messenger of Allah gawoke in the morning, he said, “I saw what you did and nothing would have stopped me from coming out to [pray with] you, except that I feared it may be made obligatory upon you.”That was in Ramadan.

‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Abd r narrates, “One night, I went out to

the masjid in the company of [Ameer al-Mu’mineen] ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab h and found the people in different groups.

One man was praying alone here and another was praying with a little group behind him there. So, 'Umar h said, 'In my

opinion, it would be better if I collect these (people) under

the leadership of one Qari (Reciter) (i.e. let them pray in

congregation!)'. So, he made up his mind to congregate them behind Ubai bin Ka'b h. Then on another night I went out

again in his company and the people were praying behind

their Qari. On that, 'Umar remarked, 'What an excellent

innovation this is! However, that [prayer] which they sleep through

is better than the prayer they are performing.’ He meant by this the

(Tahajjud) prayer at the end of the night. (In those days) people used

to pray in the early part of the night.”

severity of the extended standing in the prayer.

This is regarding Tahajjud Salah (Qiyaam al-Lail),

not Taraaweeh Salah (Qiyaam Ramadan) as is

evident by

‘Aisha i says that He g would not pray more

than this in Ramadan or any other time.

Taraaweeh Salah is only in Ramadan, not any

other time. Tahajjud however is performed all

throughout the year.

Imam al-Bukhari lists this under the chapter of

Tahajjud (chapter 25, subchapter 16).

Ibraheem Nakha’ee r (d 96 A.H.) says: “When a woman prostrates, she should bring her thighs together and press her stomach against them.”

He also said: “When a woman prostrates, she should press her stomach against her thighs. She should not raise her bottom nor should she leave room between the limbs of her body as a man does.”

as much as possible. She should not allow

any space between her limbs so that her

woman) prostrates, she should bring her

arms up close to herself and press her

stomach and chest against her thighs. She

Abu Bakr al-Kasani al-Hanafi r writes: “A

woman should spread her forearm out on

the ground, and lower herself without

raising her body as a man does. She should

also press her stomach against her thighs,

as this is more concealing for her.”

Dusuqi al-Maliki r states: “It is preferable

for a woman to contract herself in such a

way that her stomach is attached to her

thighs and her elbows are attached to her

knees.”

Ibn Qudamah al-Hanbali r writes: “The general principle is that the laws of salahwhich apply to men apply to women as well. However, she differs with a man in this aspect that, she should not leave space between the limbs of her body. Therefore, it is preferable for a woman to contract herself as this is more concealing for her.”
