Luther and the Stories of GodBiblical Narratives as a Foundation for Christian Living

Robert Kolb

“We think of Martin Luther as a great reformer, preacher, theologian, and writer of oceanic breadth and depth. But he was also a compelling master of the spiritual life. In this engaging study, Robert Kolb shows how Luther’s spirituality is rooted in the metanarrative of God’s words and deeds conveyed through the sacred Scriptures. A major contribution both to Luther studies and to spiritual theology.”—Timothy George, Beeson Divinity School; general editor, Reformation Commentary on Scripture

“Written by one of the foremost Luther scholars of our day, Luther and the Stories of God provides an expert and engaging account of how the Wittenberg reformer sought to cultivate a rich sense of Christian identity in his contemporaries through narrative, both in his teaching and preaching of the Word of God. Kolb masterfully shows how Luther invited his hearers and readers into a conversation with the speaking Creator God, a conversation that was to define them as human beings and sustain them as they faced the vicissitudes of life in a fallen world. Valuable for historians, theologians, and literary scholars alike, Luther and the Stories of God contains much that will be of interest and inspiration to anyone who wishes to engage in the same divine conversation today.” —Ronald K. Rittgers, Valparaiso University

“Robert Kolb has once again written a superb study of Luther that opens new avenues for understanding of the thought of the Reformer. The book is sensitive to current analyses of narrative theology and profoundly immersed in the thought-world of Martin Luther, adding significant insight to the discussion of themes in Luther’s theology such as Law and Gospel and the two kinds of righteousness.”—Richard A. Muller, Calvin Theological Seminary

Theological, Historical & Ethical StudiesMapping Modern TheologyA Thematic and Historical Introduction

Kelly M. Kapic and Bruce L. McCormack, editors

This text offers a fresh approach to modern theology by approaching the field thematically, covering classic topics in Christian theology over the last two hundred years. The editors, leading authorities on the history of nineteenth- and twentieth-century theology, have assembled a respected team of international scholars to offer substantive treatment of important doctrines and key debates. The volume enables students to trace how doctrinal questions were discussed, where the main debates lie, and how ideas developed.

E n d o r s e m e n t s

“This intriguing volume fills a gap in teaching materials for theological students that has long been noteworthy: it tackles the traditional loci of systematic theology through the lens of modernity’s particular challenges. . . . [T]his book will prove to be an excellent textbook and focus for debate.”—Sarah Coakley, University of Cambridge

“This collection of fifteen essays on key topics will repay careful study. Through examining the different ways in which the central doctrines of the Christian faith have been handled under the pressures of modernity, it provides valuable orientation for students of modern theology. Clear, informed, and insightful, it deserves inclusion on all relevant reading lists.”—David Fergusson, University of Edinburgh

New Release Postliberal Theology and the Church CatholicConversations with George Lindbeck, David Burrell, and Stanley Hauerwas

John Wright, editor

How does postliberalism relate to Roman Catholic theology? More specifically, how reliant is postliberalism on what happened at Vatican II? This volume centers on conversations with three of the most important North American theologians in the last half of the twentieth century—George Lindbeck, David Burrell, and Stanley Hauerwas—to examine the Roman Catholic roots of postliberal theology. After two opening chapters by John Wright, the book includes three chapters based on interviews with each theologian, followed by a dialogue between them and a conclusion by Wright. This work not only offers insight into the contingent histories of three seminal theologians but also places postliberal theology within the broader stream of the Great Tradition of the church.

E n d o r s e m e n t

“A powerful and much-needed defense of Christian ‘postliberalism’ as central to the unity of the church catholic. . . . Wright shows how the words of Lindbeck, Hauerwas, and Burrell serve as best witness for the defense, and his own words brilliantly join theirs to the ressourcement of Congar and de Lubac. . . . Wright’s book marks a new day (and new names) for ‘postliberal’ theology, now Protestant and Catholic, and more urgent than ever. The book is amazing.” —Peter Ochs, University of Virginia

E x c e r p t

The term postliberal theology still generates heat. . . .

Postliberal theology, as we have known it, is radically liberal—a movement of updating the faith given to the saints—at the same time that it is radically conservative—nothing less than a return to the normative historical sources of the faith. It seeks to faithfully carry on the life of the church catholic. . . .

This theological program grew out of and developed its ecumenical potential as a response to a divided church whose witness was helpless—a church that had even supported the devastation that World War II wrought upon the world. For the postliberals Christian language is not merely verbal but encoded within the embodied life and practices of the ecclesial body and its individual members. The Christian witness to peace is inextricably bound to the ability of the church to live, speak, and confess in harmony. Postliberal theology addresses concerns for the unity of the church within a world devastated by violence and war.

Theological, Historical & Ethical StudiesThe Space BetweenA Christian Engagement with the Built Environment

Eric O. Jacobsen

Cultural ExEgEsis

William a. Dyrness and robert K. Johnston, series editors

The entire material world can be divided between the Natural Environment and the Built Environment. Over the past forty years, the Natural Environment has received the greater share of attention of the two, but that is beginning to change. With a renewed interest in “place” within various academic disciplines and the practical issues of rising fuel costs and scarcity of land, the Built Environment has emerged as a coherent and engaging subject for academic and popular consideration.

While there is a growing body of work on the Built Environment, very little of it approaches the Built Environment from a distinctly Christian perspective. This major new work by Eric Jacobsen, author of the well-received Sidewalks in the Kingdom, represents a comprehensive and grounded approach. Jacobsen develops a framework for understanding the Built Environment and addresses timely and controversial topics such as gentrification, urban sprawl, and energy consumption. Employing tools from the field of theology and culture, he demonstrates how looking at the Built Environment through a theological lens provides a unique perspective on questions of beauty, justice, and human flourishing.

The Space Between is embellished with plentiful photographs, illustrations, charts, and exercises and will be of interest to students in cultural hermeneutics, theology and culture, urban ministry, or New Urbanism/Built Environment courses at the college and seminary level. Pastors, missionaries, church planters, and Christian professionals will also find it of interest.

A b o u t t h e S e r i e s

The Cultural Exegesis series provides methodological and foundational studies that address the way to engage culture theologically. Each volume works within a specific cultural discipline, illustrating and embodying the theory behind cultural engagement. By providing the appropriate tools, these books equip the reader to engage and interpret the surrounding culture responsibly.

Baptismal Imagery in Early ChristianityRitual, Visual, and Theological Dimensions

Robin M. Jensen

Robin Jensen, a leading scholar of early Christian art and worship, illuminates the theological meaning of baptism by exploring multiple dimensions of the early Christian baptismal rite. She examines five models for understanding baptism, showing how visual images, poetic language, architectural space, and symbolic actions signify and convey the theological meaning of this ritual practice. Considering image and action together, Jensen offers a holistic and integrated understanding of the power of baptism. The book is illustrated with photos and will be useful to professors and students in courses on theology, ritual studies, liturgy, and sacraments as well as to art historians and archaeologists.

E x c e r p t

This study does not try to reconstruct the details of actual baptismal practices in different places and times; rather, it elucidates its effects and meaning for those who received and administered the ritual. Baptism not only inaugurated Jesus’s ministry on earth, but as it developed into the inauguration of the Christian life, it effected certain social, spiritual, and ontological changes in the lives of those who received it. Thus, this book seeks to explicate the sensory as well as the spiritual experience by showing how symbols and figures emerged, merged, and took precedence at various points in the ritual process. It wishes to demonstrate how visible images and actions, along with verbal recitation of ancient stories, prayers, and hymns, all contributed to making an invisible presence more palpably sensed. Every aspect of the sacrament aimed at bringing a transcendent reality to earth where it could be apprehended through the bodily senses. To accomplish this required created matter (i.e., water, oil), human agents, ritual actions, a special spatial context, and a set of stories and symbols that could be reinforced, both verbally and visually.

Theological, Historical & Ethical StudiesThe Early Church on KillingA Comprehensive Sourcebook on War, Abortion, and Capital Punishment

Ronald J. Sider, editor

Noted theologian Ron Sider lets the testimony of the early church speak in the first of a three-volume series on biblical peacemaking. This volume offers a thorough, comprehensive treatment on topics of perennial concern—war, abortion, and capital punishment—providing English translations for all extant data directly relevant to the treatment of these issues by the early church until Constantine. Primarily, it draws data from early church writings, but other evidence, such as archaeological finds and Roman writings, is included. The book contains brief introductions to every Christian writer cited and explanatory notes on many specific texts. The Early Church on Killing will be a helpful text in courses on ethics, theology, and church history.

E x c e r p t

In his treatise On Idolatry, Tertullian asks whether a Christian can be a government official. He responds by listing a large number of activities, including pagan sacrifices, such a person must avoid. One of those includes “sitting in judgment on anyone’s life”—that is, a Christian dare not participate in ordering capital punishment. Two chapters later, Tertullian asks whether a Christian can serve in the military even at a low rank, where “there is no necessity for taking part in [pagan] sacrifices or capital punishment.” Tertullian clearly means to say that a Christian dare not participate in either pagan worship or capital punishment.

In his response to Celsus, Origen distinguishes sharply between the “constitution” given to the Jews by Moses and that given to Christians by Christ. Under Moses’s law, the Jews could kill enemies and use capital punishment. But Christ’s gospel is different: Christians cannot “slay their enemies or condemn to be burned or stoned.” Christians must not use capital punishment.

The Fall of InterpretationPhilosophical Foundations for a Creational Hermeneutic, 2nd ed.

James K. A. Smith

This provocative book offers an innovative approach to hermeneutics. The second edition of James K. A. Smith’s well-received debut book provides updated interaction with contemporary hermeneutical discussions and responds to criticisms.

E n d o r s e m e n t s

“The first edition of James K. A. Smith’s Fall of Interpretation cast a clear, sharp light on the important topic of difference in interpretation, and the contribution he made to the theological understanding of hermeneutics has still not been fully appreciated. This second edition, with a new introduction and an added chapter that draws on Smith’s further years of philosophical, theological exploration, makes an even more powerful claim for the attention of anyone concerned about the prospects for hermeneutics.”—A. K. M. Adam, University of Glasgow

“With the absence of an ‘interpretive police,’ in the first edition of The Fall of Interpretation James K. A. Smith worried how to keep at bay the charge of relativism. This revised edition unambiguously affirms the particularity of the Nicene tradition as the locale for genuine interpretation of Scripture. Smith cogently argues that we need the church’s authoritative theological interpretation of Scripture to live with the varying degrees of the author’s ‘real presence’ in the text.”—Hans Boersma, Regent College

“In the hands of the unskilled or unwise, hermeneutics can be dangerous, fueling a blaze of apocalyptic fire where interpretation dissolves creaturely goodness into a relativistic morass. Nonetheless, as Smith persuasively argues, interpretation is inevitable. To reject it for ‘immediacy’ is to close one’s eyes to the obvious. Smith shows how hermeneutics emerges not from our sinfulness but from our creaturely goodness. This second edition guides the reader along Smith’s own path, resisting the ‘emergent’ temptation in favor of ‘catholic’ substance.”—D. Stephen Long, Marquette University

Biblia Americana, vol. 3Joshua–2 Chronicles

Cotton Mather; Kenneth P. Minkema, editor

The manuscript of Cotton Mather’s Biblia Americana has resided for centuries at the Massachusetts Historical Society and is a rich, legendary, yet seldom used monument of scholarship from one of early America’s most colorful figures. In collaboration with Mohr Siebeck and an international team of experts in early American studies, Baker Academic releases the second of ten projected volumes in this long-awaited and magisterial series.

Following publication of the inaugural volume on Genesis, this installment treats Mather’s engagement with the Historical Books. In just over 500 manuscript folio pages, Mather amassed some 1,250 entries on Joshua through Chronicles. Drawing on a dizzying array of classical, medieval, Reformation, post-Reformation, and contemporary sources from virtually every discipline, Mather explores, via the sacred historical texts, a host of issues, including idols and idolatry; parallels with “pagan antiquity”; the people of Israel’s rise, decline, and fall; and modern forms of infidelity. How can we explain Joshua’s making the sun stand still? What was the height of Goliath? Where were the Ten Tribes dispersed? How can we discriminate between prophets, seers, and discerners? How wealthy were David and Solomon? Mather provides a wealth of information about details in the biblical narrative and about the assumptions and state of scholarship in his own day that is illuminating and instructive.

P r a i s e f o r Vo l u m e 1

“A very welcome addition to the primary sources for the study of American religious and intellectual history. . . . This volume, and the volumes to follow, of a long-delayed publication on the oldest biblical commentary in the US will be a nearly inexhaustible resource for biblical scholars, theologians, historians, and linguists. . . . Highly recommended. Graduate students and researchers/faculty.” —B. M. Stephens, Choice

“[This] scholarly effort of extraordinary dimensions is reinforcing the image of Mather as a significant theologian/intellectual/pastor to whom attention must be paid.”—Mark Noll, Books & Culture

“In the Biblia on Genesis, Smolinski has meticulously arranged and edited the text in such a way that Mather’s commentary will be more accessible to historians wanting to probe Mather’s genius. . . . The Mather project is indeed a major publishing event and one that should be welcomed by historians of American Puritanism and acquired by research libraries around the world. The project is as ambitious as Mather’s renowned ego, and one wholly worthy of academic attention.”—Randall J. Pederson, Westminster Theological Journal

“This edition will spark new insights into American religious, cultural, and intellectual history.”—Douglas A. Sweeney, Religious Studies Review

Theological, Historical & Ethical StudiesGod and Charles DickensRecovering the Christian Voice of a Classic Author

Gary L. Colledge

Though Charles Dickens’s writings are now more than 100 years old, many remain in print and are avidly read and studied. Often overlooked—or unknown—are the considerable Christian convictions this author held and displayed in his work.

God and Charles Dickens illuminates a fresh perspective on Dickens by examining Dickens the Christian and showing how Christian beliefs and practices permeate his work. Gary Colledge examines Dickens’s novels, letters, and other writings to explore his Christian thought and worldview. Chapters examine Dickens’s life and work topically, arguing that Christian faith was front and center in some of what he wrote (such as his children’s work The Life of Our Lord) and saliently implicit throughout various other characters and plots. This work, especially timely since 2012 is Dickens’s 200th birthday year, will appeal to students of literature. It brings to life the vital faith of an enduringly important and vastly popular writer.

E x c e r p t

When Joseph Gold described [Charles] Dickens as a radical moralist he meant that Dickens was both moralist and reformer at the same time. Developing this idea further and with greater clarity, Gold summarized: “The moralist as artist is someone who believes in and reveals to us our own possibilities for living more meaningfully. The reformer is someone who wants to see a different society appear by some means or other. . . . Dickens is not concerned with the philosophical question of whether such a world is possible. He makes it happen in his art.” For Dickens, this all emerges from his decidedly Christian worldview. To live more meaningfully for Dickens is to live according to God’s design and order within a world created by God and in which God is active. And doing that means nothing more, and nothing less, than committing to follow the example and teaching of Jesus; to imitate Jesus as we give our lives in service to others; to be forgiving, generous, and compassionate. Dickens was convinced that it was in just this way that society would be transformed. And he truly believed in that.

Union with ChristReframing Theology and Ministry for the Church

J. todd billings

“An important book on an important topic. Billings brings his expertise regarding Calvin to bear not only on misconceptions about the great Reformer but also on contemporary misconceptions of Christ and Christian ministry. Drawing on rich personal experiences, he offers an accessible and rewarding study, demonstrating that the centrality of union with Christ can solve many theological problems in a way that has direct practical significance for today.”—George Hunsinger, Princeton Theological Seminary

“If Reformed theology is going to make the comeback that many of us have been praying for, this marvelous book offers the kind of careful thinking that will make it happen. Billings illuminates concepts like adoption, divine incomprehensibility, and incarnation in a way that has profound implications for ministry in the twenty-first century.”—Richard J. Dictionary of Scripture and EthicsJoel B. Green, general editor; Jacqueline E. Lapsley, Rebekah Miles, and Allen Verhey, associate editors

“The relationship of biblical studies to moral theology has not been given the attention it merits by biblical scholars. This impressive volume has pulled together important articles on a wide range of topics that will certainly be of importance to systematic and moral theologians. The selection of topics is broadly ecumenical and should appeal to the widest possible audience.”—Gary A. Anderson, University of Notre Dame

“A book as ambitious as the Dictionary of Scripture and Ethics risks being too superficial to be helpful. I am happy to report that this is not the case for this imaginatively conceived and organized book. This book will quickly become an indispensable resource for Christian reflection on the moral life.”—Stanley Hauerwas, Duke Divinity School

“Renewed interest in the relationship between Scripture and ethics has created the need for an accessible and reliable guide to the issues and the literature. This is it.” —R. W. L. Moberly, Durham University

“Wide-ranging, thorough, and cautious, the Dictionary of Scripture and Ethics will be a helpful resource for both students and scholars. With its mix of different kinds of articles and its attention throughout to biblical materials, the dictionary meets a significant need and provides something for almost any reader.”—Gilbert Meilaender, Valparaiso University

Kicking at the DarknessBruce Cockburn and the Christian Imagination

brian J. walsh

“Brian Walsh has offered us an enthusiastic celebration of Bruce Cockburn as a postmodern psalmist. Walsh engages in sustained reflection on Cockburn’s sometimes dark and obscure lyrics and shows how they reflect a deep Christian sensibility that cherishes creation, groans along with the pain of a corrupted world, and yearns for the final revelation of beauty and justice. Longtime fans of Cockburn like me will find fresh shafts of light falling on familiar words; those who haven’t yet discovered Cockburn will find themselves beckoned to encounter a world-changing artistic vision.”—Richard B. Hays, Duke Divinity School

“At last, a robust engagement with Bruce Cockburn’s art that brings Canada’s prized poet-musician into sustained and creative dialogue with biblical faith. Walsh writes with obvious affection for his subject but also considerable lucidity as he ranges far and wide across the Cockburn canon. Good things happen when erudite theological reflection takes popular culture seriously.” —Michael Gilmour, Providence University College, Manitoba

War and the American DifferenceTheological Reflections on Violence and National Identity

stanley hauerwas

“Disenthralling Americans from war will require an authentic realism that displaces the illusions commonly passing for realism. In this luminous volume, Stanley Hauerwas continues the vital work of planting the signposts that show us the way.”—Andrew J. Bacevich, Boston University; author of Washington Rules: America’s Path to Permanent War

“Hauerwas defends a Christian pacifism that allows no compromises with war, including that most common form of compromise—just war theory. Christians will be powerfully challenged by his claim that nonviolence is a necessary condition of a church that is a living witness to Christ. Secular readers will be forced to rethink the ground of their own commitment to a politics built on violent sacrifice. Hauerwas demands of all of us that we think through the character of our faith and the sources of ultimate meaning in our lives.” —Paul W. Kahn, Yale Law School

Hans Urs von Balthasar is widely recognized as perhaps the greatest Catholic theologian of the twentieth century. Yet students and nonspecialist readers often find Balthasar daunting. This volume is the ideal introduction to his work and captures the essence of what Balthasar wished to say.

E n d o r s e m e n t

“Combining profundity of thought with lucidity of expression, Aidan Nichols offers a penetrating discussion of Balthasar’s participation metaphysic. The fruit of decades of reading the German theologian, this little gem captures the unity of his massive trilogy on beauty, goodness, and truth by way of devotional exposition, thereby reminding us of theology’s basis in prayer and purpose of holiness. Few theological books are as pertinent, both culturally and doxologically, as this exercise in epistemological optimism!”—Hans Boersma, Regent College

Broken HallelujahsWhy Popular Music Matters to Those Seeking God

christian scharen

“The realm of popular music, like much in pop culture, is often written off as bleak and godless. Scharen pleads that this is the result of a ‘constricted imagination,’ and rightly so. This very readable book will provoke discussions that are much needed in the church and beyond.”—Jeremy Begbie, Duke University

“Christian Scharen’s theological meditation on popular music shows why Christians and popular artists have serious spiritual concerns in common. He argues that pop musicians are already literate about the creative character of surrender in their lives and work, and that Christian theology too finds its center in graceful surrender to God with and for others. Fans of music and students of spirituality will and should be drawn in by the work of this discerning, inquisitive theological thinker and unapologetic—but not uncritical—music fan.” —Tom Beaudoin, Fordham University

Be Not AfraidFacing Fear with Faith

samuel wells

“Sam Wells has given us good medicine in this book that both diagnoses the fears of our times and offers the remedy of the gospel. In these engaging and wise essays, Wells addresses not only our fear of death but also our fear of life in all its messy complexity. With a deft mix of storytelling, biblical interpretation, and theological reflection, Wells assiduously tells us the truth about the world—a truth we can face because the way beyond fear is not through denial but through patience, hope, and courage. This is a timely and much-needed book for a church tempted to make self-protection more important than discipleship.”—Scott Bader-Saye, Seminary of the Southwest

“Wells makes profound theological insight and artful language seem effortless. Each essay is a gem, the product of deep thought and the wordsmith’s craft.”—Thomas G. Long, Candler School of Theology, Emory University

A New EusebiusDocuments Illustrating the History of the Church to AD 337

J. stevenson and w. h. c. frend, editors

“For half a century, A New Eusebius has been the means by which many of us first heard the voices of the early Christians in their own recording. Chronologically ordered and topically selected, this anthology still provides the most noteworthy witnesses to the Church’s formation in its sufferings, doctrinal disputes, and professions of faith.”—D. H. Williams, Baylor University

“J. Stevenson’s classic two-volume compilation, A New Eusebius and Creeds, Councils and Controversies, assembles snippets from a wide range of hard-to-find materials. The final result is a brilliant mosaic of early Christianity.”—William Harmless, author of Augustine in His Own Words

Creeds, Councils and ControversiesDocuments Illustrating the History of the Church, AD 337–461

J. stevenson and w. h. c. frend, editors

“Professors of early Christianity will enthusiastically welcome the reprint of these two extremely well-selected and unsurpassed collection of documents [A New Eusebius and Creeds, Councils and Controversies]. These two textbooks have long set the standard for collections of original documents illustrating the practices and thought of early Christians. It is extremely useful for those who teach this period to have these texts back in print.”—Kevin Madigan, The Divinity School, Harvard University

“This collection of documents from the world of early Christianity not only is handy, but it also enlightens. Here, in the antique, one may find something rare, something lovely, something new.”—D. Jeffrey Bingham, Dallas Theological Seminary
