Curriculum (ELA- English/Language Arts)

Reader’s Workshop:

◦ Daily reading mini-lesson teaching skills and strategies

◦ Guided Reading – students read to self and/or partner, participate in literature groups, and/or conference with teacher

◦ Reflection

◦ RTI/Journey Time – students practice differentiated reading interventions/strategies in small groups

Writer’s Workshop:

◦ Daily writing mini-lesson teaching skills and strategies

◦ Composing / Conference

◦ Reflection

◦ Weekend News– students will record their weekend activities each Monday morning as “Morning Work”. This will help them to find ideas from their lives to write about. They will also work on sentence length, fluency, spelling, conventions, and creating a timeline as an organizer for their thoughts.

Words Their Way – working with words:

◦ Students examine, manipulate, compare, and categorize words to make discoveries about how words work. This is a developmental approach to phonics, vocabulary, and spelling instruction.

Curriculum Continued

Math Workshop:

◦ Daily math mini–lesson on math practices

◦ Games/small groups/ independent work time

Note: Within our math series (EnVisions) – students will be introduced to a variety of addition and subtraction strategies. Part of each student’s nightly homework is to practice using the strategies to build fact fluency to 20. While we encourage students to practice their math facts using flash cards as a tool; our focus is to move away from simply using flash cards for rote memorization of facts.

Science: hands-on discovery and experiments

Social Studies: project based learning activities including research.

Grading It is a second grade expectation that students reach the end-of-year target score of 3.0 by May. It is not uncommon to see 1.0-2.0 on a child’s first and second quarter report cards.

To earn a score of 4.0, students must demonstrate their knowledge of second grade skills, show their understanding consistently, and be able to apply their knowledge to new situations.

Page 11: Prairie Point Second Grade Team Pam Carver – Room 203 Rita Lawson – Room 204 Becky Ford – Room 202 Sarah Mustoe – Room 201.

Homework◦ Second grade teachers use an assignment book as a two-way

home/school communication tool. Students are expected to have their parents review their assignment book nightly, sign it, and return the book to school the next school day.

◦ As nightly homework, students are expected to read a book at their reading level for 20 minutes, practice their word work for 5 minutes, as well as practice their math strategies for 5 minutes nightly.

Homework should take a student no longer than 30 minutes to complete nightly.

Testing Fountas & Pinnell:

◦ Student reading, comprehension, and vocabulary will be assessed using a

Benchmark Assessment System. They will also be given a spelling inventory to

determine their spelling development state and place them in a Words Their Way

learning group.

STAR Reading/Math and Acuity:◦ STAR tests will be taken monthly during a class computer lab session.◦ Acuity will be taken three times this year (Fall, Winter, Spring).

Writing:◦ Students will learn three forms of writing. The second grade expectation is students use proper

writing format as well as quality handwriting. Your child will publish a narrative, informative, and opinion piece of writing. Students will also learn about the different types of poetry and try composing some of their own pieces.

Terra Nova: ◦ Will be taken over three mornings in April/May. More information about this will be sent home

closer to testing time.

Discipline SOAR slips

◦ Children will be awarded SOAR slips when proper behavior, following directions, etc. is observed both within the classroom as well as outside.

BIST (Behavior Intervention Support Team)◦ This is a model of intervention for students who are having inappropriate behavior or continue to

repeat a behavior. Set steps are in place so students understand teacher/school expectations.◦ The steps include moving to a safe seat, buddy room, recovery room, and office referral. Parents will

be notified when a student moves to a step beyond a buddy room. ◦ Your child may also move into a SOARing Stars program if they would benefit by having additional

structure added to their day.

Recovery Room ◦ This is a safe place for students to recover from any undesired behaviors and refocus to become

ready to re-enter their classroom. A parent will always be contacted when a student moves from the buddy room to the recovery room where they will process through their undesired behavior with Mrs. Sickman.

SOARing Stars ◦ A positive behavior support where students set goals as well as check in and out with an adult.

Class Dojo◦ An additional behavior support system to help bridge our home/school relationship and give you

additional information on your child’s day.

Olweus Bully Prevention

Olweus is the most researched and best-known bullying prevention program available today. Even with our best efforts, students may still experience bullying at some point in their lifetime. To stop bullying, it must be addressed. The goal of this program is to change the norms around bullying behavior and to restructure the school setting so that bullying is less likely to occur or be rewarded. This is a long-term effort of change that has been implemented across all grade levels.

At Prairie Point, our staff is committed to addressing our school’s peer culture and how kids treat one another.

Treats must be store bought and ALL THE SAME. (If you bring one white cupcake…they are ALL white cupcakes.) New this year ~ all birthday’s will be celebrated in the cafeteria. They will sing “Happy Birthday” and serve treats.

Conferences: Oct. 28 and 29. A “Sign-up Genius” will be sent via email for all parents to schedule their conference. It is my expectation that I speak with each and every family so you may know your child’s level of achievement. We will also set individual learning goals for each student to work towards as our year continues.

Newsletters: Weekly newsletters will be sent home via email. Please read them carefully for important dates, etc. and let your child’s teacher know if you do not receive a newsletter.
