THE CITY
After the ’Velvet Revolution’ in 1989, Prague has been an internationalmetropolis with all the usualtrappings—but it has also managedsuccessfully to retain its unspoiled localcharacter. The Czech capital is small andcompact, with hospody (beerhouses) thatoffer the world’s best beers stationed onevery street corner. The most importantareas are the central districts of the city:Staré Město (Old Town), Josefov, NovéMěsto (New Town), and Malá Strana(Lesser Town). These are best explored onfoot. In recent years, the district ofVinohrady (Vineyards) has establisheditself as the district favoured by Pražani(the Prague inhabitants), and therestaurants and cafés lie closely packed. When you visit Prague, it is worthremembering that not only does the cityboast an impressive history, whichstretches back many hundreds of years, but it has also fostered exciting architects, artists, and designers of the 20thcentury. Prague was once the centre ofCentral European modernism, a fact whichtoday, after a long period of dictatorship, has almost faded into oblivion. Duringrecent years, modernist Czecharchitecture and interior design haveexperienced a recovery, and there isnearly always a good exhibition to see.
