As a student, I wish I would have known not be short-sighted when considering options. What is right for you may not be right for anyone else. Ask as many questions as possible about any potential position and don’t be afraid to go after that one position or one career move you feel you won’t get or be able to achieve—you will very often surprise yourself with the results.

I wish I would have known how important a residency is—although I was fortunate enough to learn about the benefits of residency training during a 4th year rotation and was accepted to a residency program following graduation; I believe the importance is not stressed enough during school.

Although a residency is hard work and an additional year before entering the workforce, it has been very rewarding. The experience I have gained has made me feel exponentially more confident in treating and managing ocular disease independently.

The first job you find after graduating may not be your dream job. It’s important to start working and get experience and over time you will eventually be able to find the job you dreamed of.

Be inquisitive. Be a self-directed learner; if not for yourself, for your patients. Do not shy away from opportunity. Never close doors as you might need one in the future. You will experience a plethora of satisfaction whether from patients, student education, or both.
