How effective is the medium of cinema? Quite effective but more
in the case of persons belonging to a particular age group. This
has been my experience. I am sure people of my age would definitely
agree with me.
--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->
elen was such a good cabaret dancer. Her dances were not at all
vulgar but graceful, said my friend. But when y children see films
of those times, they comment, How does uncle say Helens dance
movements were not lgar? Look how skimpily dressed she is. Why
Helen? Even the heroines of your times wore such tight fitting d
provocative dresses. You have no right to comment on the dances of
present movies.
--[if! supportEmptyParas]-->
es. When I see old movies, I do find that some of the dresses
that Waheeda Rehman or Sadhana or Asha Parekh Sharmila wore were
really very revealing, body fitting and provocative. Why did we not
find them vulgar those ys? Just because we were younger? May be.
And what about the lyrics? Some of the old Tamil film songs had
autiful lyrics and were well composed to lovely tunes. But only
when we sit and think of those lyrics today, do e realise that some
of the lines had double meaning. What is the difference? Why do we
feel or comment that ms and songs of yester years were wonderful
while the quality of films and lyrics is going down today?
--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->
an only think of one big difference. Romance of our times was
very indirect and suggestive. Body language as not vulgar. Romance
and sex were separate. The romance that Nutan or Waheeda Rehman or
Jaya Bhaduri pressed seemed very holy and pure. There were couples
on screens who had no physical contact all their lives t still
poured romance all over and kept haunting us for years. For
instance, the best character that I liked in the m Sholay was that
of Jaya Bhaduri, who appeared just in a few scenes. She hardly
spoke a few words but she mains in my heart till today. Then the
romance that Jaya Bhaduri and Amitabh played in Abhimaan is
forgettable. It was such a decent love story and so natural that it
could happen in anybodys life.
--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->
ut then, the people outside the reel life also led such lives.
We hardly saw couples physically even holding hands kissing in
public. We never saw our parents romancing in our presence. Love
marriages were rare and even in ch cases the couples never went
around in public. But today, the lifestyle has undergone drastic
changes and ungsters have become a lot more independent, bold and
confident. It is good to hear youngsters doing well in e fields
that they choose and selecting their life partners after a lot of
thinking and settling well in their lives. owever, there are a few
youngsters who have all their priorities wrong and end up as
failures in their fields and eir personal lives. But such cases
were existent even in our times.
--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->
e major change that we observe today is physical nearness
between the opposite sexes, which is not a big issue ese days. Love
is most often linked to sex. Love almost happens more out of
physical attraction between enagers and such teenagers end up in
trouble. Infatuation and love are mistaken as the same.
--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->
days cinema too exhibits this kind of lifestyle. One who watches
the commercial Bollywood movies must think at life is all about
mere love between teenagers; colleges are meant only for such
activities and these days even h screen parents happily encourage
and support their teenage children to win their love partners,
never mind if ey fail in their academics and do nothing but only
work in various ways to woo their partners!! What a wrong ay of
projecting something so holy! True love is never identified.
Children forsake parents who brought them for years, sacrificing
all their wants for their education, for some partners, who may
turn out to be big zeroes erely in a matter of two to three years.
Divorces are increasing. Love, which is born on account of physical
raction definitely vanishes soon and then the man and the woman can
see only the demerits of each other. The ord compromise is totally
being edged out of the dictionary. Each individual is becoming an
island.
--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->
between all these, it is nice to see movies also causing
positive ripples like the latest movie Lage Raho Munna hai, which
has awakened the feeling of Gandhism in the minds of the youth.
Such positive discussion and loud nking on good issues may really
increase the positive energy in the society. The director has
really been very novative in bringing out a very serious topic in a
very light manner, which has attracted the whole nation. Even the
ripples are short-lived, it will definitely create some permanent
impression on a few minds at least. The plosion in the media is
also helpful in discussing such interesting topics and keeping the
zest alive for some me. Hope more and more directors make use of
this medium to spread more and more positive messages rather an
highlighting the violence and sorrow in the society. Maybe that
will some day help the whole world to live in ace. Very unrealistic
dream but let us hope for this dream to come true!

GD 2: Effect of cinema on youth
Viral Vora (1) Motivational and Positive e.g., impact that Rang
De Basanti had on the youth voicing their opinion in Jesicca Lal
case or re-awakening to Ganghigiri after Munnabhai MBBS (2) On the
whole, very ephemeral impact. Because Bollywood churns out over 800
films a year coupled with the demanding life of toay's youth, they
watch movies mostly for entertainment and do not get affected
much.
Merup Kapadia (1) Censor board plays an important role
in determining correct and ethically right things to the people
as the cinema we watch in some way or the other directly impacts
us. (2) Not only the youth watching the cinema but also youth
involved in making the cinema are impacted. eg, if path breaking
films are not made, youth might never be able to do out-of-the box
thinking, for eg. films like Dor, Iqbal, 3 deewarein, being cyrus
(may not be commercially hit but critically acclaimed), do
encuorage young filmmakers to try and do something new. (3) Adding
to the point of Viral, films/cinema do actually generate positive
ideas in youth, for example, we have films like Yuva where in Ajay
Devgan forms his own political party for fighting against
injustice, so in real life there are political parties been formed
in states by youth eg.(Five IITians have formed a new political
party in India, named Paritrana & organizations like Youth for
Equality.)
Devanshi Vaishnav (1) 3.1 bn tickets sold everyday in India as
compared to 2.9bn in the US (2) Another direct impact is by the
virtue of employments. Bollywood e mploys 6 million people. (3)
When we say Bollywood, it covers movies produced in all languages
and the fact that only 20% of movies (of 1000 produced a year ) are
Hindi.

Biren Master sarrah (1) On the flip side, movies are one of the
channels/medium through which western culture has influenced
today's youth from fashion to relationships. (2) The increased
importance of glamour over substance in today's movies must also be
discouraged. (3) Noticeably, not many films these days address the
'traditional' social issues like poverty, dowry, plight of rural
women (except 'Dor'), domestic violence, casteism and others due to
which youth (atleast urban youth) are more or less ignorant of
these issues. (4) On the positive side, path breaking movies like
'Chak De India' have come to inspire sportsfans, 'Taare Zameen Par'
allowed people to understand and address the issue of 'special'
kids and the need for initiatives that need to be taken for them
for us to be truly called an evolved and civilised society.
Vikas Kappe (1) Cinema is a kind of digital media which has lot
of power in order to impact minds of millions of people and
specially youths in a short span of time. The impact can be
positive or negative. (2) Effect of cinema majorly(except some rare
cases) depends on how individual youth perceives it. e.g. from
adventurous film, one individual young person may go for
unnecessary adventure whereas other sensible individual can use
this adventurous impact on his mind in his work to bring himself to
upper level in his career/life. (3) Unfortunately many bollywood
films are more focused on comic part and style culture by
assumption of removing daily fatiguness in routine life. They avoid
to touch important social issues which can also attract a lot of
crowd like done by Madhur bhandarkar's films and Amir khan's recent
film "Tare zamin par" as mentioned by Biren. (4) If we expect a
positive effect of cinema on youth in India then many Indian film
makers have to bring orignality to the films instead of copying
some parts from hollywood films and
also try to make films enjoyable as well as a learning
experience for the youths.
Vikrant Bawkar I would also like to make a point here. (1) Today
we can see that the youth also got into the habit of smoking like
how Shahrukh or Sanjay Dutt does in their films. The youth found
themselves very proud to smoke like these superstars. (2) The other
example is, in films like Vaastav and Traffic Signal wherein the
Red Alert Areas were shown, todays youth is also getting attracted
towards Red Alert Areas and wants those ares to be visited often.
This is a very dangerous thing for the country like India which is
going to be the Powerful Democratic country in near future.

Manish SalianGD 2: Effect of cinema on youth (continued)

Saurabh P (1) Effect of cinema on youth is, according to me,
wide and varied. We could have an optimistic view and say how
movies like "Rang De basanti" and "yuva" have positively influenced
the society. While there are several movies which have just added
to the negative influence on society. (2) Considering a country
like India where cricketers and movie-stars are considered to be
demi-gods, movies play a crucial role in shaping the mindset of the
youth of the country who are the most influenced. The success of
the products endorsed by the movie-stars like Shahrukh Khan,
Hrithik Roshan, Amitabh Bacchan, etc are classic examples to support
the case. (3) In such a case, movie-makers and filmstars become a
set of leaders whose ideas are followed by the young generation. It
is therefore necessary for the filmmakers to be responsible towards
the society and set a good precedent in front of the youth. (4)
Having said this, we as the educated youth of India should also act
responsibly and not blindly follow the ideas depicted by
cinema.
Here, self-censorship comes into picture and plays a very
important role as cinema is a feedback-oriented industry. (5)
Unfortunately, in our country, the censor board is treated like a
puppet and has no teeth. The state of affairs in the cine-industry
could get much better if the censor board becomes more powerful.
(6) Apart from this, Indian cinema, of late has been greatly
influenced by the western culture. Though the positives drawn could
be that the Indian mentality is slowly becoming liberal and
open-minded, its very important to understand that the traditional
Indian culture should not be compromised upon.
Alok Thakkar (1) Every coin has 2 sides there r also some ve
impact on people & childrens Such as Krish movie which
influence the childrens vely .As there were many cases eg. That
kids jumped from the bulding thinking that they can fly like Krish
which took place in many cities in India. In India bollywood stars
r like a living God for the Youth , the bollywood stars are much
involves in the ads for colas, fast foods like pizzas, chips, lays
& alchohal which is not good for the youth to get addicted to
it & to consume it , but they do it as their favourites star
are involve in it eg. Saif ali khan involves in ad of alchohal .
Movies like Nishabd & chenikum are not accepted in Indian
culture & it was a big shame that the star of the millennium
MR.A.B was involve in this movies. Movies like Girlfriend &
Ajnabi are inspiring the youth wrongly . (2) On the other side
movies like Corporate, Page3, Traffic signal & Chandni bar r
showing the dark side of the life which is not known by the comman
people.
Shraddha Kamat (1) Inspite of the fact that most films that are
made are 'flops', the fact remains that they are still produced.
Isn't there a huge risk factor involved on the investment? Is there
no entrepreneurial aspect to this (2)An awaking call. Films like
'Tingya' being accepted and appreciated after the world has given
various rewards to it (3) Censor board is now only remnants of what
it was. Films portray what they want to portray - the good the bad
and the ugly
Karishma Savla (1) The impact depends upon two things the kind
of cinema we are talking about and the receptors state of mind. (2)
At a very young and vulnerable age , movies which depict violence,
vulgarity, horror, sex and meaningless entertainment create a
negative impact. (3) The latest six pack ab makeover by Shahrukh
Khan and Kareena's Extreme weightloss regime for certain character
in her film, created such a negative impact, that youngsters
already obsessed to achive great looks and physique resorted to
means like taking weight loss pills(drugs)and extreme starvation to
emulate their role models creating serious health concerns. (4)
Looking at the flip side, just as music and aroma therapy there is
something called as film therapy, founded in a research centre in
Moscow. Film therapy uses , health films (like health foods) to
cure patients suffering from mental depressions, frustration,
mood-swings,fatigue, disorintation, stress etc. The health films
are nothing but comedy films which use simple and accidental humor
that induce laughter which helps in reducing the mental strain and
stress and helps release healthy hormones in the system.

Cinema impact on society
PROJEKT iVIEW | Talking-Points | July 28, 2008 at 9:53 am

iView Author: Zia (Lakshadweep, India) EMAIL: ialak [at] gmail
[dot] com Title: Cinema impact on society The history of all
hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles. The
communist manifesto (1848) argued that capitalism will produce
internal tensions which will lead to society distruction. Many
agreed initially but was absolutely vanished off the picture later
though still prevails in some countries. He argued for a sytemic
understanding of socio economic change. The communist manifesto
past all the records then. It was an inpiration. Many
adapted/followed/believed to the content of the book. They praised
Karl marx. Many worshipped. Now let us come to a cram of the
influence made by movies. How far can a change happen based on
cinema? And if happened, how long would it last? Like i said above,
when a single book can make huge impact on generations why not
cinema cant? Despite its advantage over any other media cinema has
always failed to convince the audience in large. Admitting
influential movies happened, i noticed, there always was some kind
of mataphor missing out there. Having watched many credible movies,
some honestly touched me. But why there is no movie which would end
result as communist manifesto did? Most influential movies were
replica of books. Consequently were thought provoking to some
extent. For instance, story Othello was made to various languages.
I have seen the othello remakes in malayalam and hindi as well.
Admittedly, these movies are crafted splendid. But bottom line is
that they had to copy from a book to make it! Arguably we have well
known directors and script writters who had changed and have the
calibre to change the whole metaphor of cinema influence. There
have been several Patriotic movies. But the feeling never lasted
for long. Rather onlooker would overturn to his favourite cricket
in short time! Completely forgetting about the cinema he saw.
Unfortunately, this is a sad phenomenon happening in the movie
industry.
There has to be cinema whcich could change people lifestyle,
their approach towards life. Mani ratnam is one director who like
his movies become accustomed in people. We need directors like him
who should come up with experimental and true story based cinema
which can touch life od many. I wish to watch evident movies rather
than flamboyant. May be this is the reason prompted me to write
this. There always had been credible movies all over the world.
Many failed to convince but some did. i always wondered why not a
cinema make an impact on a society. In my society cinema is not
prevalent. In socities where cinema is prominent, many just give it
a watch. They dont go indepth or research the raison d'tre of a
cinema. My question to you is can a cinema make ( in future
atleast) a huge impact on society? Can there be a cinema which
could change thoughts of people? Your suggestions are welcome.VN:F

I would add names of Raj kumar Hirani and Rakeysh Omprakash
Mehra to the list. In recent times, movies by both these directors
brought the youth of our society to a very common ground in their
vision and the way to express it (namely Gandhigiri and RDBstyled
rallies in support of their common cause).UN:F [1.8.0_1031] Rating:

tejas, thanks for your response. i was talking about a long-term
influential movie which could really help change society. Arguably,
gandhigiri and RDB was phenomenal. But somewhere it failed to last
in ones mind. Isnt it? A day after watching this movies one is
behind another concept forgetting so called RDB or gandhigiri.
Rakeysh Omprakash should be counted in this list though i dont
agree fully with Raj kumar hiraniUN:F [1.8.0_1031]

Zia, the basic reason why the movies you want to see dont leave
a l;asting impression is because of the fact that the communist
manifesto itself is flawed and a fraud. If you look through the
history of indian cinema plenty of them have been madethey just
fade away. Only humanist and universal themes survive the ages and
resonate through time. The communist manifesto, just like any other
messianic credo is built on flimsy premise and the power of
suggestion that the messiah figure has. propaganda is propaganda,
in the ultimate analysis it does not have the power to linger (even
if for some time it may exert a strong influence). The one
exception to this may be religion but that is an indoctrination
that begins at a very young age and therefore requires a slightly
deeper introspection to negate in ones mind.UN:F [1.8.0_1031]

only handful of people read Das Capital when it was written..
then these people interpreted and misinterpreted the lofty ideals
of the book to the rest of their fellow countrymen.. whereas there
is no scope of this kind of propaganda in movies.. moreover a book
provides you the opportunity to visualise the facts and fictions in
your own ideal way whereas the cinema restricts you to the visuals
thought by some another person along with Karl Marx i will add
Vivekanands name. his lectures from colombo to almora moved a
generation of indian youth to start revolution against the colonial
rule of British.. and most of them were underground. And i dont
believe Munnabhai and RDB were path breaking movies in terms of
content.. i see them as good films but hypocrisies exercised by our
generation to show some credibillity.. Gandhi is not just
non-resistance and youth is not just about rebelling..UN:F

There is a primary difference between movie and books ,while the
former has an entertainment quotient ,books are primarily meant to
be a source of knowledge. not to mention the fact that movies
require a medium ,projector ,dvd ,cd ,while books can be written
and read anywhere ,even when in jail. moreover it is very easy to
convey ideas through a book rather than through a movie ,the
limitations of the medium restrict what we can convey hence the
limited impact ,which is why even a 100 godfathers(the movie) cant
match the impact of one single Fountainhead .UN:F [1.8.0_1031]

Gandhi is not just non-resistance and youth is not just about
rebelling.. But can you imagine a holistic picture of Gandhi
without non-resistance and youth without rebellion? Also, as Vineet
said, movies have an entertainment quotient. I dont believe today,
when information is abundant, any book or movie or cultural
movement for that matter stays much longer on the minds of the
audience.

@Zia: Thanks for bringing this discussion on this platform, at
times i am also confused with the same Q ? Can cinema change the
society? To be frank , my life has some serious impacts of CINEMA .
Quite a few movies are indespensible for me , which at one moment
or other definetly helps me. A few are quoted below 1. Anand by
Hrishikesh Mukherjee 2. Thoda sa Roomani ho jaayein ( Amol Palekar)
3. Guide ( Vijay Anaand) 4. Ijaazat ( Gulzar saab) 5. Anubahv (
Basu da, i personally believe this is the most touching story on
Husband wife relationship) etc above flicks have definetly left
some postive impact on my psyche and i go back to them to seek
support. and yes, i do agree with you , RDB was pathbreaking,
inspirational but lage raho munnabhai..i hv doubts. if we go by the
definition, Cinema is basically a mode of entertainment , therefore
whatever story we screen through the movies it should entertain the
audience and in the process if a message is conveyed .. wow !! thts
icing on the cake. my 2 cents, -Ajay
