Summary & Future Development
“he LORD said, "Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. 7"Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another's speech." 8So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.…”(Genesis 11:7)
This project investigates the use of multilingual signs in three culturally diverse areas in South Manchester. We chose those three areas as each is particularly representative for a multilingual community with at least more than 50% residents stating to have an ethnical background other than British for each ward. We focus on local shops and private businesses as our aim was to look into the local's perspective on the importance/relevance of multilingual signs. Particularly interesting for us is the message, in other words the meaning which lies in the decision to put up the sign and the languages that were chosen. In order to find an answer for these questions, we developed both a qualitative and quantitative approach which will be further explained in the methodology.
We decided to only look at signs that were permanent, which excluded adverts and announcements. We also excluded the menus that were put in the restaurants, as XXX.

Informal and poor English Logic Flow?
Manchester, the world’s first industrial city, has been embracing ethnic diversity since the 19th century. Together with New York, London and Paris, Manchester offers a vision of a globalised multilingual mosaic, vividly displaying the language and culture of over 200 communities (Census 2012).
Manchester is without any doubt a very diverse city – a key reception to migrants around the globe. In Manchester, new arrivals may be first greeted with English signs and traditions, they will be able to find local businesses literally around every corner which provide them with food and products that remind them of home. These shops do not solely supply their customers with commodities – they also provide them with emotional benefits. The aim of our coursework is to find out, how exactly this emotional aspect is carried out through the use of multilingual signs.
