The Singapore Youth Flying Club (SYFC) was honoured to host a visit by the Commander of the Royal Brunei Air Force, COL (U) Wardi Bin Haji Abdul Latip on 16 May 13. His visit to SYFC accompanied by

MG Hoo Cher Mou, Chief of Air Force RSAF, provided him a good understanding of how we recruit and nurture our youths to have a strong interest in aviation and fl ying. He also toured the Club’s facilities and got a close look at our aircraft trainer, DA 40.

The Club is pleased to graduate another batch of 39 Junior College and Polytechnic students who have obtained the coveted Private Pilot Licence Wings on 11 May 13. Congratulations to the student graduands and the prize winners who won the Best in Ground School and Best in Flying trophies. I also extend my congratulations to our CCA students who achieved 3rd position in the F-2F racing event during the Western Australian National Aeromodelling Championship held in Perth, Australia.

As part of our eff orts to publicize our programmes to youths, the SYFC is pleased to partner the Singapore Discovery Centre in the launch of the 3D Air Racer Show successfully. We hope to interest and attract many more youths into aviation and fl ying through such partnership.

11 May 2013 – SYFC PPL Wings and Aviation Awards Presentation Ceremony.

SYFC honoured 39 Private Pilots from various Junior Colleges and Polytechnics at the Club’s

annual PPL Wings and Aviation Awards Presentation Ceremony on 11 May 13. Mr Chan

Chun Sing, Acting Minister for Social & Family Development and Senior Minister of State for

Defence graced the occasion and presented the “Wings” and trophies to the prize winners. Four

teachers were also recognised for their invaluable contributions to the SYFC’s CCA programme.

PARTNERSHIP WITHSINGAPORE DISCOVERY CENTRE

Singapore Youth Flying Club partnered the Singapore Discovery Centre in the launch of 3D Air Racer Show. The Club set up 4 fl ight simulation stations to provide fl ight experience to visitors. Youths were encouraged to participate in a contest that will win them joyrides onboard our DA40

aircraft. Below are some of their experiences and remarks after the fl ight.

“I was nervous before the fl ight. However after the plane took off, I calmed down with the small island right below my feet,” Qu Zilin

“I could see terrifi c scenery when I was fl ying, my fi rst time in a light aircraft,” Tan Yee Ann

“It is more thrilling and fun than fl ying in a simulator,” Chua Yi Xuan.

“The 45 minutes joyride turned out to be awesome. I survived and my legs did not tremble,” Danial Isyraf Bin Iszeraj.

FIRST SOLO STUDENTS

Being alone in the aircraft was the greatest moment of my life yet. Never did I think it

was possible that I would be fl ying a plane by myself. It was diffi cult to comprehend the

heavy responsiblitiy but once you are in the skies, there is no turning back. You just

have to put everything the instructor has taught to good use.

To be able to sit in the cockpit of an aircraft and control it just by yourself is really awesome.

Though it was just for a short 10minutes, it meant hours of fl ight training and confi dence

to be able to control the aircraft from take-off to landing. The 1st solo experience will

always remain in my head and I am already looking forward to my next solo fl ight!

As the wheels of the aircraft gently lifted off the ground, I was effectively on my fi rst

solo fl ight- no one else in the plane but me. The feeling was like

no other other-mixed between nervousness and excitement.

With the help of all the instructors contributing to my training, I was

able to complete a full circuit and land without a problem. The feeling

of accomplishment was immense and my jubilation was hyped even

more with my successful admission into the PPL course. This 10mins

of solo fl ight made all those weeks of preperation worthwhile, a one true

experience of a lifetime not to be forgotten.

SYFC gave me the prestigious opportunity to expand and deepen my interests

to be in the RSAF. Though it was an arduous journey, the experience

I had throughout the entire year makes it all worthwhile. Providing me with the

once-in-a-life time chance to learn how to fl y for free and earn my wings.

I am extremely elated to have passed the SYFC fl ying training course and to have

obtained my Private Pilot’s Licence. It has been almost exactly a year since my very

fi rst fl ight till today, the day I passed my Final Handling Test. It has been a wonderful

thrilling ride, with its ups and downs and good and diffi cult times. This has really been

an eye opener and I cannot wait to start a brand new journey of fl ying in the Air Force.

I climbed into the cockpit of the F16. Within a short while,

the canopy came down and I was all fi red up to go.

The pilot, ‘Hokum’, did his checks before taxiing to

the runway.

During the takeoff run, I can feel the tremendous thrust

coming from the engine. Right after we took off, we did

a steep turn to the left. While we were fl ying towards the

training area, the other F16, where Wan KS was in pulled

up behind us on our left. It was very close.

The view was magnifi cent because I have never seen

anything like this before. Once we reached our training

area, we started the air exercises without delay. Hokum did

several turns to test how much Gs I can take. He then

began various aerobatics like Clover Leaf, Split S and etc.

I experienced at least 4Gs while doing the aerobatics.

The G-suit would infl ate and squeeze my legs and abdomen

whenever Gs were pulled. I was given the chance to fl y

the F16 and it was absolutely awesome. It’s fast and

highly manoeuvrable. The control stick was really sensitive

and diffi cult for me to control. Finally, we did a dogfi ght.

It was really thrilling during the dogfi ght because everything

was fast paced.

Overall, I am thankful for the opportunity given to me.

It was defi nitely the most memorable ride of my life.

When I found out I was one of the two selected to go on the F16 Familiarisation fl ight, I was ecstatic and also very thankful as this is a once in a lifetime

opportunity. The fl ight I had was probably the most amazing and adrenalin-pumping experience I had in my life thus far.

As soon as I sat down in the backseat of the jet, the feeling I had was indescribable. I can’t wait to be up in the skies. The pilot who fl ew with me guided me throughout the fl ight and ensured that I had enjoyed myself.

During the takeoff, I can feel a surge of energy propelling the jet forward due to the afterburner. I was thrown into a left turn and experienced about 2-3Gs. The speed and the rate of climb was tremendous. I was already at South China Sea.

We then started doing some air exercises and aerobatic manoeuvres like Loops, Split-S and Cloverleaf. I experienced constant G-forces in the vicinity of 5-6Gs and it was really thrilling. I can literally feel the Gs that were exerted on me with the G-suit infl ating and putting pressure on my lower body and abdomen.

Soon after, I was given control of the aircraft and I did 3 loops by myself. Before we recovered back to base, we were dogfi ghting with the other F16 where Craig Lee was in. It was really an awesome experience.

While we were returning back to base, I was handed the controls again. It was diffi cult to control the aircraft as the control stick was really very sensitive. A slight movement on the stick would cause it to deviate easily.

In conclusion, the F16 joyride was an amazing and thrilling experience. I am really glad and thankful to be given the opportunity to have the ride of my life.

29 TO 31 MAR 13Langkawi Land Langkawi Land Expedition 2013Expedition 2013

On the 29 Mar 13, a group of 22 SYFC CCA students from the various School

YFCs and three Trainers embarked on a 3-day land trekking exercise in Langkawi.

Besides displaying resilience, navigation planning and teamwork in moving

through meandering tracks on the island, students also had the opportunity to observe

the Langkawi Airshow aerial displays. Jonathan Wong Jian from Evergreen Secondary

School commented “it was a memorable experience observing the various aircraft

fl ying low level. Students also had the opportunity to improve on leadership and

organisational skills, bonding with students from the other secondary schools during

the land trekking”. Joshua Ang Qi Wei from St. Andrew’s Secondary School commented

“the trip was very enlightening as I improved my aviation knowledge not only on aircraft

recognition but also on the airfi eld environment. I loved the fresh air, sound of aircraft

landing and taking off and observing chickens and water buffaloes during our trekking!

I will go back and pass my experience to my juniors and am looking forward to sign up for

the SYFC fl ying course”.

AEROMODELLING COMPETITION 2013

SYFC hosted 3 Australian aeromodellers from Perth, Australia to participate in the Singapore National Aeromodelling Competition 2013, organised by the Aeromodelling Federation of Singapore.

We were fortunate that the haze cleared up on 22 June and facilitated the control line aeromodelling competition for the gas-powered racing event. The results for the events conducted by SYFC were :

Trevor Letchford (who had started aeromodelling at the young age of 8 and had represented Australia in the World Control Line Aeromodelling Championships since 2006) commented “We are all very happy that the haze cleared up for us to do some intense fl ying and compete with the young Singaporeans in the hot and humid weather. We were very impressed with the enthusiasm and fi ghting spirit displayed by the young Singaporeans. I am certainly looking forward to meeting up and compete with them in Australia next year”.

Paul Liew commented “I am very happy to have won in the events and must thank my mechanic, Sebert for his fast pit-stops for fast refueling and restarting of engines. Sebert and myself are looking forward to work hard and hope we could represent Singapore in the 2014 World Control Line Aeromodelling Championships in Poland.”

AEROMODELLING COMPETITION 2013

A delegation of 2 staff and 4 YFC students participated in the Western Australian

National Aeromodelling Competition 2013 held in Perth, Australia from

30 May to 4 Jun 13. Our team, Paul Liew (pilot) from Singapore Polytechnic

and Richard Ong (mechanic) came in third in the F2F team

racing event.

Alena Rae Ong (from CHIJ Toa Payoh), the youngest female

participant at 13 years old, commented that ‘we all gained useful

exposure on the need to work together and have the fi ghting spirit

to have resilience and a never give up attitude. We managed to make

a lot of friends and discussed on aeromodelling in general.”

Emmanuel Kwan from Chung Cheng High (Main) commented

“it was a very good experience fl ying in a foreign country and was

an eye-opener as I learnt a lot from the Aussie adult aeromodellers,

who were willing to show us the fi ner parts on aeromodelling.

I am appreciative of their eagerness to give a helping hand before

the competitions. I am looking forward to participate in more

aeromodelling competitions.”

A total of 220 students from 15 school YFCs

and the Open Unit participated in the annual

Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition

2013, organised jointly by DSO and Singapore

Science Centre from 19 to 23 Mar 13. SYFC students

participated mainly in designing and building a small

unpowered glider of limited wingspan to be propelled

from a launcher to achieve the longest range event

and designing and building a small remote-controlled

air platform capable of completing a series of

exciting tasks event. NUS(High), Hillgrove, Hwa Chong

Institution, St. Andrew’s, Westwood and Northbrooks

Secondary Schools did very well and won several

prizes in the competitions. NUS (High) and St.

Andrew’s Secondary School came in winners

and runner-ups in the Unpowered Glider Event

respectively.

Seah Shao-Xuan from Hwa Chong Institution, whose

team “Team Altitude” won the Presentation Gold

Award in the Unpowered Glider Category commented

that his team members worked very hard doing

research and working on the model plane and are

looking forward to win the Championship Award

next year.

For months the members of Hillgrove Secondary School’s Youth Flying Club (YFC) had been preparing and training for

the Speech Day Night Flying Demonstrations. Planes had to be built and re-built after crashes. A formation had to be choreographed and practiced to a new tune. Then there was also the challenge of fl ying at night for the fi rst time, and in front of esteemed guests.

With perseverance and under the much appreciated guidance of teachers and dedicated alumni members, members were fi nally ready to showcase their talents.

On 19 Apr 13, Hillgrove’s YFC performed during a segment of the school’s Speech Day. Senior members of the club welcomed Director General of Education, Ms. Ho Peng, to give her a brief introduction to the club and its activities, before leading her to the best part of the evening.

Three planes rose gently to the dulcet tune of a fl ute before going full force in a spectacular show of aerobatics. The planes rose to the full height of the school building before dramatically losing momentum and then picking it up again to continue fl ight. The night sky came alive with the electric red and blue of the planes’ LED lights. Parents, teachers, students and the esteemed guests appeared thoroughly intrigued and entertained by the show.

A big thanks to all who have helped to make the fi rst night fl ying performance a roaring success!

The ACS (Barker)’s Parent Support Group visited SYFC to better understand the Club’s operations so that they may encourage their children to participate

in the SYFC training programme.

Clemen Liu, Benny Goh, Colin Yeo, Fan Shun and Justin Foo emerged as the “Top Guns” of ACS (Barker) in the fl ight simulation competition.

Both parents and their children have a great bonding session and an enjoyable morning at the Club. Chairperson, Lee Na hopes to see many of the boys taking up fl ight training

with SYFC in the near future.

BREITLING JET TEAMWOWED AUDIENCES IN SOUTH EAST ASIAE

arlier this year, the world’s largest civilian aerobatic jet team made its maiden tour in South East Asia from end of February to March.

The Breitling Jet Team fl ew their L-39C Albatros and clocked over 40 fl ight hours to bring their unique display to thousands of spectators in the region. Each display lasts about 20 minutes in formation with synchronised rolls, loops and crossovers at speeds of up to 750km/h and 8G force.

First stop in the Philippines saw the jets performed as part of the 18th Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, followed by Jogjakarta in Indonesia. For the third leg in Singapore, the jet team performed off the waters of Siloso Beach, Sentosa. Finally, round up the fourth and fi fth leg in Malaysia and Thailand respectively. Visual masterpieces of the jet team fl ying over iconic and scenic locations in Malaysia and Thailand were also captured by renowned aviation photographer, Katsu Tokunaga.

Recently, the Breitling Jet Team performed for crowds in South Korea and Japan as part of the Breitling Asian Tour. The pilots will embark on tours to showcase the essence of precision, speed and audacity to new audiences in the rest of Asia and Middle East in later part of the year.
