The Bulletin 3December 2014
This month’s cover named ‘Lovely Twins’ was created by Chung Li. He earned a
Gold Ribbon in the portrait category in May this year.
Chung tells us, “This newborn twins picture was taken at the home of my client in
Lafayette. I was very excited about their request for a portrait now that they have two
new additions. I really wanted to create something a little girly. I thought a pair of pink
bows would look really cute and sophisticated on them, so I purchased them online in
advance specifically for this shoot.
I positioned these two sleeping cuties on a chair with the window lighting and a
white reflector. The light was mostly coming from the soft light from the reflector. I
used a grey blanket for a more simple and clean look. The edge of the blanket was
folded to cover the diapers and to show some of the blanket texture. The gear I used
was the Canon 5D Mark III, f/24-70mm f/2.8 , with settings of ISO800, f/3.5, 1/60 sec,
handheld.”

The Bulletin 5December 2014
Well, the officers and the board members met for our final meeting for 2014 followed by the Vendor’s meeting at the Oakland Impact Hub on Nov 20th. Judy Hermann was the guest speaker. It was a wet and cold rainy night, but that didn’t deter the 100+
attendees from visiting with the vendors and socializing with us. Northern California Professional Photographers (NCPP), and American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) collaborated with us to jointly host this event. We had a nice selection of food, wine, beer and soda. Judy’s presentation was not only educational but informative on the way to look at your photography business in the 21st Century.
There were a lot of photographers that attended that were outside of the three organizations. The raffle and numerous prizes donated by the vendors were a big hit, yearly websites from Photo Shelter to an album from Philip Mauer, as an example. We had a people’s choice competition, with some creative printed displays from the members of the three organizations. The expansive Hub was the ideal place to showcase all our vendors. It was great to see our current and former PPGBA members there.
We also voted in our new president, Paul Salcido and new positions for our board members. I am happy to announce that we also voted and passed the revised membership dues for 2015, as an incentive for our regular members to renew on time, we also included a $99/year renewal pricing. The revised membership dues for the different categories of membership will be posted on our website as well as our bulletin.
My time as your president is ending this month. The goals for this year were mostly met. We have made great strides in reducing expenses, increasing revenue, creating more involvement of our members by offering better speakers and seminars. We also are more involved in social media, with our Facebook and meetup sites. The plan is on doing more in 2015. We continue to make PPGBA a respected and valued organization. Our busy webmaster, Wayne Miller is streamlining and improving our ppgba.org website.
In closing, I will still be active on the staff in 2015. Please give your new incoming president, Paul Salcido and board members, your full support by participating in our activities and by entering in our monthly image competitions. We also would like some of you to volunteer in helping our chairpersons on our on going events happening though out the next year. It is with great satisfaction that I was able to serve as your president of PPGBA this year!
Happy Holidays to you and your families!
Your President

Year-End CompetitionThe more entries you have, the more opportunity you have
to win! (Plus, you receive extra chances in our annual drawing for
a seminar scholarship for each entry you submit throughout the
year).
If you did not enter at all or much this year, please start
planning ahead for a successful 2015 and get involved in this great
process to refine your technique.
At our annual awards celebration early next year, several
talented members will receive year-end plaques for their
photography. You could be a winner, too! You may submit up to
five entries for the year-end competition. YOU MUST FORMALLY
SUBMIT YOUR 5 IMAGES TO THE PRINT COMPETITION DIRECTOR
FOR THEM TO BE INCLUDED in the year-end judging. These
submissions can be any image you entered since the beginning
of the year that scored at least a 74. You must be a current PPGBA
member as of December 15, 2014.
To enter, all you need to do is email ([email protected]) by
December 15 and list which five (titles, please and month entered
if you can recall that) that you’d like to enter. There will be no
re-edits of any submissions; we already have each file for all of
the digital entries. If the images you’d like to submit for the year-
end were physical prints then you’ll need to resubmit those same
prints (showing the PPGBA entry sticker on the back) either at the
November meeting or December social on or before December 15.
Here are the other rules for the year-end competition:
First, second and third place awards may be awarded in the
categories: Portraits, Weddings, Illustrative, and Commercial. The
top portrait image as selected by the judges will be awarded the
Ted Gurney trophy.
If you enter any individual category five or more times during
the year, your top scores will be totaled and the highest average
score wins the Top Photographer Award for that category. You do
NOT need to submit anything for the Top Photographer awards, the
scores will be tabulated from the monthly competition results. The
Album Maker of the Year is also calculated from top scores from the
monthly competitions.
The Photographer of the Year Award is open to any member
who submitted five or more entries during the year, and will go to
the highest average score. You do NOT need to submit anything for
the Photographer of the Year award, the scores will be tabulated
from the monthly competitions.

ABOUT THE SEMINARSome call the sun the only light you’ll ever need. The best part about it - it’s there every day and it doesn’t need batteries or cords. But to make it look good, that takes practice.
Before we step into the realm of light modifiers, times of day and camera orientation, we’ll start the workshop by noticing light. We’ll look at faces, what light looks good, what light looks

bad, and why. Then, we’ll discuss how to find that good light, how to put your subject in it, and then most importantly, how to repeat it.A portrait photographer for over 20 years, Bob got his start photographing adventure travel around the world. Everything he had at his disposal was in a bag on his back. As he went on to
photograph people for advertising, corporate and editorial clients, he used all sorts of artificial light but always finds himself looking for ambient light.“It’s a different way of scouting. You start with light, and then look for background, graphics, and other elements, but it all starts with light.” Whether you are an established
veteran pro or even an emerging professional photographer, you’ll want to attend this hands-on workshop to learn how to improve and enhance your available light portraiture.Following a morning lecture in the studio, there will be a few outdoor demonstrations from the topics covered, and then a lunch break.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORRobert Houser is a San Francisco based commercial photographer who shoots for advertising, healthcare, corporate and editorial clients throughout North America. More than 20 years ago Bob began photographing people, real people - connecting with them and telling their stories.Born and raised in New England, Bob discovered a love of photography during his senior year at Brown while taking classes at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He began his career shooting adventure sports, traveling to more than 20 countries over a five year span. Landing in Silicon Valley during the dotcom era, Bob became a go-to photographer for publications like Business Week, The Industry Standard and Red Herring, among othersFast forward a decade (or two), and
Bob can be found shooting advertising images for BioMarin, Sanofi, PG&E and TitleNine, editorial work for the Forbes, Fortunes and WebMDs of the world, and annual report images for Visa, Safeway and BioRad. His work has been recognized multiple times by Communications Arts as well as the Folio Ozzie and Davey Awards. His personal projects, including Facing Chemo and Fatherhood, have earned him kudos from media, industry professionals and even Gloria Steinem, who wrote the foreword for one of his books.A chameleon at heart, Bob can move from a construction site to an executive suite with the ability to put anyone he is shooting at ease - making a connection with them, in their setting (he just needs to change his shoes first).
Bob feeds his inspiration at home on his ranch in the Oakland Hills where he lives with his wife, two kids, a dog, six chickens, four koi, a box full of bees, and three goats, and definitely too many gophers. The ranch is also home to a large, newly renovated studio, built out in the old red barn, which he shares with the goats; though they have to stay in their wing of the building and aren’t be allowed to play with the Hasselblads. Powered by solar panels, the studio has maintained certified Bay Area Green status for five years. It’s surrounded by acres of location space, a corral (actually a 50x120 ft outdoor studio), lots of fences, and enough parking for his daughter’s entire soccer team, his location Sprinter van, a cute little electric car and, on occasion, the UPS truck.
After lunch, a quick review will be followed by a segment on light shaping instrumentsBob has numerous lighting tools set up at his indoor and outdoor studio spaces, including everything from 12x12 silks on high rollers, to simple hand-held reflectors. We will delve deeper into the examples and demonstrations from his lecture and everyone will get up and move around to see the light and how it changes. You’ll learn how to light with a silver
van, a piece of paper, even a white shirt on a passerby. We’ll all then set out to shoot actual portraits - to see and find good light. We’ll have at least one assistant on hand to act as a model subject, but we’ll also ask participants to pair up and photograph each other. With the workshop taking place on Bob’s ranch in the beautiful Oakland hills, attendees will have a few acres to explore and practice and learn.
After the shooting period, we will reconvene in the studio where Bob will download some attendee images and we’ll critique the application of the lessons learned. Following this will be a short lecture on dealing with available light in post production - making adjustments in Lightroom that will enhance the images and sometimes make the portrait appear to have been lit using artificial lights. What to bring: (will be sent with the confirmation/location info)

Holiday party at Twitter for homeless families needs photographers Hello,
Compass Family Services ( compass-sf.org ) will be holding our annual holiday party for client families on December 18th from 4pm to 7pm.
The event will be hosted by Twitter at their headquarters on Market. There will be an estimated 400 people in attendance.
If you’re not familiar with Compass…We help homeless families and families at imminent risk for homelessness to achieve housing stability,
family well-being and self-sufficiency.We just celebrated our 100 year anniversary and now assist approximately 5,000 children and parents
annually. Learn more about our program work.I am looking for a group of professional photographers to volunteer time and talent for our photos with
Santa. We’re hoping to have an all-inclusive photo experience this year with photos taken, printed and handed out before they leave the event.
The holiday party includes a dinner, crafts and activities tables, a student band will perform two, 15-minutes sets and the photo with Santa is the biggest and most loved activity. The Santa photo session will most likely run continuously the entire 3 hours. More than 15 companies and organizations volunteer their time and services to hosting, catering, entertainment, activities & crafts and the photography. Because I have a background in photography and working with (and for) professional photographers, I wanted to invite the professionals to help this year.
Because the event is at Twitter, we will have a higher security situation regarding staff, volunteers and client families regarding registration before the event and entrance. Once inside, it’s a very impressive facility.
I was thinking this might also be a great opportunity for some of your students in Golden Gate School. Please let me know your questions and suggestions. We all very much appreciate your consideration.
Thank you,Stacy Webb
