What is Ramnika Foundation Ramnika Foundation is a trust. It is a non profit,

non-political and a secular organisation. It was formed in 1995 and registered in 1997 at Hazari Bagh, Jharkhand. At present its work is carried out from its permanent administrative office at Delhi.

It is run by a Board/Committee comprising of 13 persons besides President.

The Board meets twice a year The major force behind the Foundation is the

founder member Mrs. Ramnika Gupta.

Background The rationale for forming the Ramnika

Foundtion The Foundation was formed to provide a platform to

the unheard voices of downtrodden sections of the society comprising of Tribals, Dalits, Women and religious minorities of India. The aim of the Foundation is to bring them into the national mainstream through social mobilization, literature, art and culture and strive to build a new social order based on social justice, logical thinking, pragmatism and scientific outlook.

Background Reason to focus on Dalits, Tribals and

Women It is well known that these communities form nearly

85% of India’s total population. Isolation of these communities from the national mainstream and the injustice meted out to them is a historical fact. The rational to focus on these communities is to bring these communities out of isolation, create leaders within them, engender self respect within them, empower them and to change the mindset of others towards them.

Objectives The Foundation has nine major objectives for

the targeted communities. Develop the Human Resources of the targeted

communities Develop the literature, art and sclupture of the

targeted communities. Work towards the removal of social evils and

discrimination practiced against the targeted communities

Popularize and develop Hindi language as link language in India

Objectives Raise the social status of women and children Assist the physically and mentally disabled children Educate the marginalized peoples especially

Schedule Cast and Schedule Tribes. Provide legal information and assistance to the

landless labourers, nomads, child labourers and the targeted communities to fight for their rights.

Get medical aid and relief measures implemented for the common man, women and children of marginalized communities.

WOMEN – Activities 1994 -1996 - Publication

ADHUNIK MAHILA LEKHAN – KAVITA: Compilation of poems written by more than 40 famous women poets all over the country.

ADHUNIK MAHILA LEKHAN – KAHANI: Compilation of short stories written by 15 famous women writers all over the country.

2003 – 2011 – Research The Foundation started research work on what

“Women’s Liberation” meant to women based on the experiences in their lives

WOMEN - Outcomes OUTCOME OF THE ABOVE ACTIVITIES

Published writings of 334 poetesses of 29 languages representing 25 states in the literary magazine “YUDHRATH AAM ADMI” on the issue of “Womens Liberation” (Stree Mukti)

A conference titled “Hashiye Ulanghti Stree Kavita” was held on March 26, 2011. It was organized jointly by the Foundation, Sahitya Academy and Yudhrath Aam Admi. Twenty four languages were covered and more than 200 writers and women activists attended.

DALITS - Activities Held a conference titled “Dalit Sahitya Lekhak

Sammelan” at Hazaribagh in 1997. It was organized jointly by the Foundation and Vinoba Bhave University of Hazaribagh ( now Jharkhand).

Debates on various topics held. Resolutions were passed.

DALITS - Outcomes OUTCOME OF CONFERENCE

Report of the conference was published in issue No. 41 and 42 of YUDHRATH AAM AADMI, a popular journal of the marginalized section.

Compilation of Dalit literature written by Dalits was published in the form of seven books in the Hindi language from 1997 to the present.

The President of the Foundation was approached by many Tribal writers and editors of Tribal magazines with the request that books on Tribal literature should also be published by the Foundation.

TRIBAL - Activities To contact Tribal, Dalit and women writers

individually and collectively the President of the Foundation extensively toured all over India from 2002 to 2005.

The Foundation, independently or in collaboration with other organizations and institutions, organized several conferences, meetings and workshops of Tribal writers all over India from 2002 to 2005

TRIBAL 2002

First conference of Tribal writers ever held at an all India level was organized by the Foundation in collaboration with Sahitya Academy, Delhi. It was attended by Tribals from 9 states.

Formation of All India Tribal Literary Forum’. (AITLF) as a result of the conference.

An eleven point programme formulated by the AITLF with a view to guide Tribal literary trend.

TRIBAL - Activities 2002 Conferences continued

Conference of De-notified and Nomadic Tribes. Conference and working committee meeting of

the AITLF - Tribals representing the Southern States and Madhya Pradesh attended.

Regional North East conference of the AITLF held at Guhwati. It was inaugurated by Speaker of Assam Legislative assembly.

TRIBAL - Activities 2003

AITLF Regional conference of all southern states was held in January 2003, at Hampi, Karnataka with the collaboration of Kannad University. Several issues were discussed.

2004 AITLF Regional conference of Eastern Zone held

in June 2004 at Ranchi (Participant States: Jharkhand, Bengal, Orissa and Bihar).

TRIBAL - Activities 2005

All India Adivasi Conference was held at Ranchi in April. The conference was organized by Sahitya Academy with the help of Ramnika Foundation and AITLF. Writers of 27 Tribal languages besides Hindi were represented in this conference.

Several issues effecting Tribal's were discussed Poems recited, readings of short stories and folktales held in

Tribal languages and translated into Hindi.

TRIBAL - Outcome OUTCOME OF CONFERENCES

Several Tribal writers voluntarily sent their writings to the Foundation.

Several essasy, poems, articles, plays, folk tales, folklores, myths, shaurya gathas etc. were collected at the conferences.

Volunteers researched and gathered and transcribed in the Tribal languages, the oral folk tales, poems, folklores, myths, shaurya gathas and oral history of the Tribal's and sent them to the Foundation.

TRIBAL - Outcomes

The Foundation complied and categorized all the written and oral literature it received and collected. The literature was written by Tribal writers in various Tribal and Scheduled languages as well as in English.

The above material was all got translated into Hindi by the Foundation

The compiled translated material was published by the Foundation from 2002 to the present in the form of eleven books.

Some of the material was also published in three issues of Yudhrath Aam Aadmi.

AWARDS To motivate writers from the targeted

communities the Foundation established four awards in 2000. They are to be awarded to writers for their contribution in the development of literature of their community.

On the recommendation of the AITLF another award was established in 2005 to be given to two Tribal writers.

These awards are given every 2 years.

AWARDS Birsa Munda Samman to a Dalit writer Savitri Bai Phule Samman to a Woman writer Safdar Hashmi Samman for communal harmony

and democratic writing Markham Samman to a non-Hindi writer for

writing in Hindi. In 2003 this award was changed to Raji Samman and was given for translation work from other languages to Hindi and vice versa.

have also been awarded by the Sahitya Academy and other Governmental bodies and institutions. They are:

OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS Some unintended achievements which Ramnika

Foundation is very proud of are: Some of the books published by Ramnika Foundation

are being used in University courses as reference materials on Tribal, Dalit and Women issues for M. Phil. and Ph.D. by students.

Many of the writers contributing to the Foundation have been praised and recognized for their work in the development of literature, languages and recording history of the targeted communities.

Publishers come to the Foundation for recommending talented writers.

OTHER ACTIVITIES Communal Harmony

The Foundation published a booklet on the Gujrat Riots.

Letters have been sent to progressive Muslim writers asking them to contribute their articles, stories and poems on the issue of communal harmony and against religious fundamentalism. The compilation will be then published by the Foundation

OTHER ACTIVITY Backward Community

Articles written by writers from the backward communities are being collected regarding their history, problems and struggles. These will be published in a book form by the Foundation.

Computer Training The Foundation was running a Computer Training

programme for the targeted community from 2001 to 2010 in Hazaribagh, Barkagoan and Ranchi,. These were closed due to lack of funding.

HOW WE ACCOMPLISHED EVERYTHING The foundation could not have achieved the

above without the dedication and selfless hard work of our countless volunteers, members of the trust, staff of the Foundation and the countless hours of work put in by Mrs. Ramnika Gupta herself.

The main funding source has been funds personally provided by Mrs. Ramnika Gupta collections and other donations given to the Foundation.

STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS STAFF:

Staff of the Foundation comprises of three permanent staff, three or four part time staff. Work also is done through outsourcing.

Founders and other members The Foundation was formed by its founder

members, Mrs Ramnika Gupta, Social Worker, Trade Unionist, Poet and Writer and Mr. K. K. Nag, VC of Vinoba Bhave University, Hazari Bagh, Bihar.

We have eleven other members who joined later on.
