Setup and Installation

The P65 UPS can be purchased separately or factory-installed in an IBMiSeries or pSeries rack.

NOTE If the UPS is pre-installed in an IBM rack, continue to “Installing the InternalBatteries” on page 22. If you are installing the UPS in an IBM iSeries (0550, 0551, or 0553type) or pSeries (7014 type) rack, continue to the following section, “Rack-Mount Setup.”

Rack-Mount Setup

The rail kit can be mounted in 19-inch panel racks from 24 to 30 inchesdeep.

NOTE Mounting rails are required for each individual cabinet. The UPS uses FC 6632 andthe EBM uses FC 6631.

NOTE If placing the P65 in a rack with existing equipment, the rack must be reconfiguredto install the heaviest item in the bottom of the rack. The UPS weighs 73 kg (161 lb) and theEBM weighs 77.1 kg (170 lb).

Each rail kit requires one (1) of each item in the following list (supplied):

The following steps explain how to install the rail kit(s):

NOTE If installing EBM(s), install the EBM rails (FC 6631) below the UPS rails (FC 6632).

NOTE All hardware referenced in Steps 2 through 4 are contained in the rail hardware kit.

1. Loosen the assembly wing nuts on both rail assemblies and adjustthe rail size for the depth of your rack (see Figure 1).

2. Select the proper holes in the rail for positioning the UPS and anyoptional cabinets in the rack.

Place the first rail at the bottom, using positions 1 and 6 for thefront hex-head screws. If you are installing additional rails, place thenext rail four holes above the last installed screw (see Figure 2).

3. Secure the rail to the front of the rack with two hex-head screws(see Figure 3).

4. Using two clip nuts and two hex-head screws, attach the rail to therear of the rack (see Figure 4 and Figure 5).

The bottom rail uses positions 2 and 4 for the rear hex-headscrews. If you are installing additional rails, place the next rail sevenholes above the last installed screw.

5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for each rail.

6. Tighten the assembly wing nuts on all rail assemblies.

7. Place the UPS on a flat, stable surface with the front of the UPSfacing toward you.

8. Align the mounting brackets with the screw holes on the side of theUPS and secure with the supplied #6-32×3/8” flat-head screws(see Figure 6).

9. If installing additional EBMs, repeat Steps 7 and 8 for each cabinet.

CAUTIONThe UPS and EBM are heavy. A minimum of two people are required to lift the UPS or EBMinto the rack.

10. Slide the UPS and any optional EBMs into the rack.

11. After installing the UPS chassis, secure the front of the UPS to therack using two hex-head screws in the top and bottom positions ofeach mounting bracket (see Figure 7). Repeat for each cabinet.

12. Slide the UPS rear hold-down bracket into the slot on the UPS rearpanel.

Be sure the rear hold-down bracket is fully seated and then tightenthe wing nuts. The UPS is now secured in the rack.

13. For each optional EBM, slide the EBM rear hold-down bracket intothe slots on the EBM rear panel.

Be sure the rear hold-down bracket is fully seated and then tightenthe wing nut. The EBM is now secured in the rack.

Installing the Internal Batteries

To install the battery trays into the UPS chassis:

1. Locate the cartons labeled “Battery Tray” (IBM PN 39J2536).

2. Verify that the battery circuit breaker on the UPS rear panel is in theOFF position (see Figure 13 on page 24).

3. Unscrew and set aside the battery retaining bracket (see Figure 10).

4. Slide the battery trays into the chassis (see Figure 11).

5. Secure the battery trays to the chassis with the battery retainingbracket and screws removed in Step 3.

EBM Installation

CAUTIONA small amount of arcing may occur when connecting an EBM to the UPS. This is normal andwill not harm personnel. Insert the EBM cable into the UPS battery connector quickly andfirmly.

If you are installing an optional EBM(s), use the following steps:

1. Verify that all battery circuit breakers are in the OFF position (seeFigure 13).

2. Plug the EBM cable into the UPS battery connector.

3. If additional EBMs are to be installed, plug the EBM cable of thesecond cabinet into the battery connector on the first EBM. Repeatfor each additional EBM. Up to four EBMs may be connected to theUPS.

4. Continue to the following section, “Power Cord Connections.”

NOTE After UPS installation, ensure maximum battery runtime by configuring the UPS forthe correct number of EBMs (see “Configuration” on page 38).

UPS Installation

NOTE Do not make unauthorized changes to the UPS; otherwise, damage may occur toyour equipment and void your warranty.

The following steps explain how to install the UPS:

1. If you are installing power management software, connect yourcomputer to the USB port, UPS communication port, or optionalX-Slott card (see Table 10 on page 43). For the communicationport, use only the serial cable supplied in the P65 accessory kit.

2. If your rack has conductors for grounding or bonding of ungroundedmetal parts, connect the ground cable (not included) to the groundbonding screw.

Remote Emergency Power-off Installation

The P65 includes a REPO port that allows power to be switched off atthe UPS output receptacles from a customer-supplied switch in aremote location.

The REPO feature shuts down the protected equipment immediatelyand does not follow the orderly shutdown procedure initiated by anypower management software. The UPS does not automatically restartwhen the REPO switch is reset; the UPS must be manually restarted.

Any devices that are operating on battery power are also shut downimmediately. When the REPO switch is reset, the equipment will notreturn to battery power until the UPS is manually restarted.

If the Off button is pressed after the REPO is activated, the UPSremains in Standby mode when restarted until the On button ispressed.

WARNINGThe REPO circuit is an IEC 60950 safety extra low voltage (SELV) circuit. This circuit must beseparated from any hazardous voltage circuits by reinforced insulation.

CAUTIONTo ensure the UPS stops supplying power to the load during any mode of operation, theinput power must be disconnected from the UPS when the emergency power-off function isactivated.

NOTE The REPO function activates when the REPO contacts close.

NOTE If the REPO function is not needed, the REPO connector must remain installed in theREPO port on the UPS rear panel.

NOTE For Europe, the emergency switch requirements are detailed in Harmonizeddocument HD-384-48 S1, “Electrical Installation of the Buildings, Part 4: Protection for Safety,Chapter 46: Isolation and Switching.”

Use the following procedure to install the REPO switch:

1. Verify that the UPS is off and unplugged.

2. Remove the REPO connector from the REPO port on the UPS rearpanel.

3. Connect isolated, normally-open, dry contacts (rated to handle60 Vdc maximum, 30 Vac RMS maximum, and 20 mA maximum)across the REPO device to Pin 1 and Pin 2 (see Figure 15).Use stranded, non-shielded wiring, size 18–22 AWG(0.75 mm2–0 mm2).

NOTE A separate contact must simultaneously cause UPS input AC power to be removed.

4. Reconnect the REPO connector to the REPO port.

5. Verify that the externally-connected REPO switch is not activated toenable power to the UPS output receptacles.

6. Plug in the UPS and start the UPS by pressing the On button forapproximately three seconds.

7. Activate the external REPO switch to test the REPO function.

1. If you are installing a UPS and non-redundant power to the device(s)is desired, plug the PDU power cord into the UPS output receptacle(see Figure 16) using the supplied power cord.

If you are installing a UPS and dual-redundant power to thedevice(s) is desired, two PDUs are required. Plug the first PDUpower cord into the UPS output receptacle (see Figure 17) usingthe supplied power cord. Then plug the second (redundant) PDUpower cord into a non-UPS protected output receptacle (mains) orinto a second UPS.

2. Plug the equipment to be protected into the appropriate UPS outputreceptacles (see page 34 for more information on load segments).

NOTE DO NOT protect laser printers with the UPS because of the exceptionally highpower requirements of the heating elements.

NOTE To prevent an overload alarm, verify that the total equipment ratings do not exceedthe UPS capacity.

3. Verify that all load segment circuit breakers are in the ON position.

4. Remove the breaker tie from all battery circuit breakers.

5. Switch all battery circuit breakers to the ON position.

6. Plug the UPS power cord into a power outlet.

Theμ indicator flashes, indicating the UPS is in Standby modewith the equipment offline.

7. Press and hold the On button for approximately three seconds.

Theμ indicator stops flashing and the load level indicators displaythe percentage of load being applied to the UPS. The UPS is now inNormal mode and supplying power to your equipment.

If the alarm beeps or a UPS alarm indicator stays on, refer to“Troubleshooting” in the Powerware 5125 Rack-Mount UPS(5000/6000 VA) User’s Guide.

The UPS automatically sets the output voltage based on the inputvoltage. To change the output voltage, see “Configuration” onpage 38.

8. If optional EBMs are installed, see “Configuration” on page 38 tospecify the number of EBMs installed.

NOTE The batteries charge to 80% capacity in approximately 3 hours. However, it isrecommended that the batteries charge for 48 hours after installation or long-term storage.

Load Segments

Load segments are sets of receptacles that can be controlled by powermanagement software, providing an orderly shutdown and startup ofyour equipment. For example, during a power outage, you can keep keypieces of equipment running while you turn off other equipment. Thisfeature allows you to save battery power. See your power managementsoftware manual for details (refer to the Software Suite CD orwww.powerware.com for the latest information).

NOTE If the power management software is not used, the individual load segments cannotbe controlled.

NOTE The circuit breaker for Load Segment 1 does not include the corded receptacle.

The P65 has two load segments as shown in Figure 21.

Turning the UPS On

After the UPS is connected to utility power, it enters Standby mode. Toturn on the UPS, press and hold the On button for approximately threeseconds (shown in Figure 22 on page 36). Theμ indicator illuminatesand the load level indicators display the percentage of load being appliedto the UPS.

Starting the UPS on Battery

NOTE Before using this feature, the UPS must have been powered by utility power at leastonce.

To turn on the UPS without using utility power, press and hold theOn button for approximately three seconds. The UPS supplies powerto your equipment and goes into Battery mode.

Turning the UPS Off

To turn off the UPS:

1. Prepare your equipment for shutdown.

2. Press and hold the Off button for approximately three seconds.The UPS switches to Standby mode (if utility power is available) andremoves power from your equipment.

3. Unplug or remove utility power from the UPS; the UPS shuts downin five seconds. The load level and battery indicators flash brieflyprior to shutdown.

If you do not unplug or remove utility power from the UPS, itremains in Standby mode.

Normal Mode

During Normal mode, theμ indicator illuminates and the front paneldisplays the percentage of UPS load capacity being used by theprotected equipment (see Figure 23). The UPS monitors and charges thebatteries as needed and provides power protection to your equipment.

When all of the load level indicators and the indicator are illuminated,power requirements exceed UPS capacity; refer to “Troubleshooting” inthe Powerware 5125 Rack-Mount UPS (5000/6000 VA) User’s Guide formore information.

Battery Mode

When the UPS is operating during a power outage, the alarm beepsintermittently, the indicator illuminates, and theμ flashes. Whenthe utility power returns, the UPS switches to Normal mode operationwhile the battery recharges.

If battery capacity becomes low while in Battery mode, the indicatorstarts flashing and the alarm becomes continuous. Immediatelycomplete and save your work to prevent data loss and similar difficulties.

When utility power is restored after the UPS shuts down, the UPSautomatically restarts. The indicator flashes until the battery hasrecharged to an acceptable level.

Bypass Mode

In the event of a UPS overload or internal failure, the UPS transfers yourequipment to utility power. Battery mode is not available; however, theutility power continues to be passively filtered by the UPS. The alarmsounds and theμ indicator illuminates red. The UPS switches toBypass mode when:

S The UPS has an overtemperature condition.

S The UPS has an overload condition of 102 to 110% for 2 minutes.

S The UPS has an overload condition >110% for 12 cycles.

S The UPS detects a fault in the UPS electronics.

Standby Mode

When the UPS is turned off and remains plugged into a power outlet,the UPS is in Standby mode. Theμ indicator flashes and the load levelindicators are off, indicating that power is not available to yourequipment. The battery recharges when necessary.

Configuration Mode

When the UPS is in Configuration mode, the front panel LEDs representthe configuration options. Use the control buttons (On button,Off button, and button) to modify the UPS configuration.Figure 24 shows the indicators and Table 9 explains the correspondingoptions.

1. Press the On button and the button simultaneously for threeseconds. The UPS switches to Configuration mode.

The indicators flash briefly and then display the enabled options.

NOTE If the indicators start cycling automatically from left to right, repeat Step 1 and besure to press both buttons.

2. Press the On button to scroll through the options. Each time youpress the button, the UPS beeps. The indicator for the selectedoption indicates the current setting; flashing represents disabledoptions (see Figure 24 and Table 9).

If you press the On button and nothing happens, the UPS is still inOperation mode. Repeat Step 1 to enter Configuration mode, andthen perform Step 2.

3. Press the Off button ONCE to select the option.

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for each option. Scrolling past the lastindicator returns to the first configuration option.

NOTE The UPS exits Configuration mode automatically after two minutes of inactivity.

4. Press the button to confirm the selection and exit Configurationmode. If you do not press the button, the UPS defaults to theoriginal settings.

i5 Interface Overview

To connect the UPS to an i5 you need:

S An Eaton-supplied Relay Interface Card and AS/400® interface cable(labeled 05142494), located in the FC 2936 carton labeled “Cable Kitfor IBM iSeries”

S An IBM-supplied UPS interface cable (labeled 1827), included withthe server

Follow the instructions included with the Relay Interface Card and CableKit to install the card and set UPS monitoring functions in i5/OSt.Installation may include removal of an existing X-Slot card from the UPS.

Connect the cables as shown in Figure 25.

iSeries or AS/400 Interface Overview

To connect the UPS to an iSeries or AS/400 you need:

To connect the UPS to an i5, iSeries, or AS/400 and a serial server youneed:

S An Eaton-supplied Relay-Serial Card, an AS/400 interface cable(labeled 124902074-030), and a serial interface cable (labeled124102022-003), located in the FC 2939 carton labeled “Cable Kit forIBM iSeries and Windows or AIX/Linux Servers”

S For the i5 only: An IBM-supplied UPS interface cable (labeled 1827),included with the server

Serial (TTY) Interface Overview

To serially (TTY) connect the UPS to a p5, pSeries, RS/6000®,OpenPower or other system you need:

S An Eaton-supplied serial interface cable (labeled 152601412-001 or124102022-006), located in the P65 accessory kit

S Powerware LanSafe Power Management Software from theSoftware Suite CD, located in the P65 accessory kit

For p5 installations, you also need:

S An IBM-supplied 2-port Asynchronous EIA adapter (FC 5723) installedon a p5 server (the pSeries does not require an EIA adapter)

S An IBM-supplied maintenance package 5200-05 for AIX 5.2L V5.2(APAR IY66260); or the maintenance package 5300-01 for AIX 5.3LV5.3 (APAR IY62267)

Follow the software installation instructions contained on the SoftwareSuite CD to install the Powerware LanSafe software. Connect the serialcable as shown in Figure 29.

To connect the UPS to a p5 or pSeries with LPARs you need:

S An Eaton-supplied ConnectUPS-X Web/SNMP Card, located in theFC 2934 carton labeled “ConnectUPS-X Web/SNMP Card Kit”

S NetWatch software from the Software Suite CD, located in the P65accessory kit

S A customer-supplied Ethernet cable

S An available Ethernet port on the server

Follow the instructions included with the ConnectUPS-X Web/SNMPCard Kit to install the card and set UPS monitoring functions. Installationmay include removal of an existing X-Slot card from the UPS.

Follow the software installation instructions contained on the SoftwareSuite CD to install the NetWatch software onto each LPAR.

Connect the Ethernet cable as shown in Figure 30.
