Question 1:In what ways does your media

product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions

of real media products?

Page 2: Powerpoint question 1

Genre• Our main character is the typical kind of character you would find in our type of

genre. • This is because she is young and seems like a normal everyday person.

Here she walks in and you are automatically aware of her young age because of the clothes she is wearing.

You can also tell that she is completely normal as she speaks to her mum just like anyone else who was entering their house.

• There are many typical events that take place in our film that are typical for the thriller genre.

This scene is where our protagonist hears the first spooky noise. These are footsteps, typical of horror and supernatural films. This follows the genre conventions.

This scene is where she hears a haunting sound coming from the fireplace, she then hears a crying sound coming from upstairs. These background noises that aren’t visible to the viewer are again typical of horror films, as they build the viewers suspicion and suspense.

This scene follows the conventions of a supernatural film, as the tap and extractor fan above the oven have turned on and there is nobody else there.

As you can see from these few video clips the dark lighting also plays a part in following the usual genre conventions. This adds to the dark an mysterious feeling of the general plot.

Narrative structure• Our opening sequence conforms and follows a classic

narrative pattern found commonly in horror films.• Beginning – everything seems fine, life is normal.• Middle – something seems wrong and we are picking

up on mysterious events. • End – we find out why these events are happening so

want to continue watching to find out how it happened.

• In our film we have an obvious victim – the girl who finds out she is dead. (protagonist)

• This then sets up the villain for the rest of the movie which will be a murderer.

Form• In a typical opening sequence you grasp the tone and genre of

the film almost straight away. This is identified by the music, lighting and overall atmosphere of the scene being played. Credits are often shown in an opening sequence, showing the names of the main actors, editors and directors.

• In our opening we followed the credits that the film ‘Seven’ showed in their opening sequence. We felt that this provided enough credits for the scenes in our opening sequence to be broken up to create suspense.

Style• Our film symbolises the general look and feel of a typical horror/mystery

film. • As mentioned before, our soundtrack uses many spooky noises associated

with horror movies. The music is slow but at some points offers a beat to increase tension and suspense. The slow music also does this.

• Also as mentioned before, there is not much dialogue. This leaves much to the imagination, and the audience has to work out themselves what is going on as there is no voice over and limited dialogue.

• The pace and rhythm are generally slow moving. This increases the anticipation of the mystery within the opening sequence.

• The lighting is dim and the kitchen scene shows a blue lighting which blends into the confusing and mysterious atmosphere.
