Strategies we use to teach the children• Sounding out!
The children are more likely to read alien words correctly if they say
each digraph.
• th and f/ph
Ensure you can see your child’s tongue when they read th and teeth
when they read f / ph
• Consonant clusters
Consonants that are grouped together get lost when they are blended.
• Split digraphs
The children need to recognise words that have a split digraph
(magic e) and that do not.
• Try digraphs with two sounds both ways and make a sensible
decision. Alien words can use ow ‘cow’ or ow ‘blow’.

Ways to help your child at home
• When practising, encourage your child to sound out each
of the sounds.
• ai makes the sound in r - ai - n not r - a - i - n
• Do not let mistake go unnoticed. Talk about the error.
Sound the word out and ask your child to repeat.
• Ask if you are unsure of a word or sound.
• Discuss the meaning of words outside their vocabulary.
• Read as much as possible.
• Play phonics games such as buried treasure.
