Presentation Notes
In real terms Beyond the topics discussed in the 12U course, here are some more training expectations and competencies we should “consider” for 12U players as they develop and prepare for 11v11.

The 12U Environment

Presentation Notes
A visual of a 12U match. Granted this is an AYSO club team who are well trained but this demonstrates the age group capability. Q. Do we challenge our players enough? Do we challenge them too much? Are regular core players capable of this? There needs to be a balance of creating a fun, safe and dynamic environment, yet with purpose and education. Can regular core players get to this stage of development without being over-trained or losing the enjoyment factor? Yes!
Page 9: PowerPoint Presentation - AYSO Corvallis Socceragainst; 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4. • If defending team successfully defend, or attacking team score, they get following points; 1v1 = 1

Formations• Goalkeeper, 3 Defenders, 3 MFs and 2 Strikers.

• Promotes passing and movement in possession and defensive shape across width of pitch when out of possession.

• Encourages players to dominate possession in middle of pitch with supporting attacking runs coming from advancing Full Backs. The L and R MFs may operate as Wingers to provide width and delivery to the 2 Forwards, or may play closer to the CMF to combine and allow the 2 full backs to provide width.

• Forwards should look to play across the width of the penalty area and be a goal scoring threat.

1-3-3-2

Page 10: PowerPoint Presentation - AYSO Corvallis Socceragainst; 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4. • If defending team successfully defend, or attacking team score, they get following points; 1v1 = 1

1-3-2-3

• Goalkeeper, 3 Defenders, 2 MFs and 3 Forwards.

• Promotes combination play and attacking overloads in possession, and compactness when out of possession.

• The 1-3-2-3 formation already includes a number of natural 'triangles' as the CMFs look to link play between the Defensive and Attacking units.

• Overloads can also be developed in wide areas with the Full Backs and Wide Forwards combining.

• Out of possession the Left and Right Forwards may be tasked to recover and defend, creating a 1-3-4-1 shape.

Page 11: PowerPoint Presentation - AYSO Corvallis Socceragainst; 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4. • If defending team successfully defend, or attacking team score, they get following points; 1v1 = 1

1-2-3-3

• Goalkeeper, 2 Defenders, 3 Midfielders and 3 Forwards.

• Encourages 1v1s and opportunities to combine in central areas and wide areas.

• Out of possession, this formation is set up to defend and press high up the pitch.

• This formation looks a very attacking formation, however when possession is lost, the team must work as a collective unit to press quickly and regain the ball to prevent being exposed in wide areas.

• If possession is secured by the opposition, the L and R Midfielders may drop into the back line as the L and R Forwards also recover into Midfield to form a 1-4-3-1 shape off the ball.

Page 12: PowerPoint Presentation - AYSO Corvallis Socceragainst; 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4. • If defending team successfully defend, or attacking team score, they get following points; 1v1 = 1

1-2-4-2

• Goalkeeper, 2 Defenders, 4 Midfielders (L, R, Defensive and Attacking) and 2 Forwards.

• Forms a ‘diamond’ in central areas with diagonal passing options provided to combine and maintain possession. Width may be provided by the L and R MFs; however, this should also be supported by the Defensive Midfielder behind ball to offer cover against counter attack and an option to switch play.

• Attacking Midfielder will attempt to combine with the 2 Forwards to create goals coring opportunities and stress the opposition back line.

• Out of possession, this formation is set up to defend compact and provide cover and support in the defensive half of the pitch, as the Defensive Midfielder screens or drops into the back line and the L and R Midfielders recover.

Page 13: PowerPoint Presentation - AYSO Corvallis Socceragainst; 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4. • If defending team successfully defend, or attacking team score, they get following points; 1v1 = 1

• Each team leaves 1 Defender in defensive half and 2 Attackers in attacking half at all times.

• When possession is lost and transition to defend occurs, players out of possession decide when, where and how to delay the opposition attack and attempt to regain possession.

• When possession is won, players attempt to attack as quickly as possible through their 2 teammates in attacking half.

• Key Coaching Points:• Decision Making: When to press and

when to drop off and delay• Where to channel opponents• Speed & lines of recovery when

negative transition occurs (to ball, space, man or recover)

• 4 Defenders starting position in line with large goal & 4 Attackers at small goals. Defenders decide how many Attackers they want to play against; 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4.

• If defending team successfully defend, or attacking team score, they get following points; 1v1 = 1 Point, 2v2 = 2 Points, 3v3 = 3 Points, 4v4 = 4 Points. Bonus point is awarded if possession is won by defending team and they score in small goals.

• Rotate teams, keep score! Score will then inform how many Defenders they send out depending on how many points a team need to win.

• Blue Team: Successfully defend, individually and as unit, to restrict opposition attacks & attempt to regain possession to score in small goals.

• Red Team: Attempt to score in large goal through dribbling, passing & combinations. If possession is lost, react to negative transition and win ball as quickly and as high up pitch as possible.

Key Coaching Points• Press Attacker as quickly as possible• Show Attackers away from goal• Supporting Defenders offer cover and

balance need to win.

Detail• Defenders apply pressure and attempt to

win ball back as soon as possible• Decisions and communication to determine

roles of Defenders - who presses? who supports? who provides cover and balance?

• Supporting Defenders to get in a position to provide cover for teammate

• Stop opposition playing forward• When to press and when to drop off and

Key Coaching Points…Defending• Create situations where players can defend individually and as a unit

• Coach the technical components, i.e., speed of approach, body position, how to win the ball back

• Coach players to recognize who should press the ball and what they should do if they don’t win the ball

• Provide players with reference points to adopt team shape based on position of the ball, space, position of opposition players & position of teammates

• Use games and activities where players have responsibilities for defending and reward defending

• Praise players for winning the ball back and encourage them to attack

Page 18: PowerPoint Presentation - AYSO Corvallis Socceragainst; 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4. • If defending team successfully defend, or attacking team score, they get following points; 1v1 = 1

Blues: Defend deep when out of possession and look for opportunities to regain ball and counter attack quickly through passing, dribbling, exploiting space and quick combinations.

Reds: Attempt to play quick, inventive passing in order to break down the opposition defense while all players need to be in attacking half to score. Be aware of the teams counter attacking threat.

Key Coaching Points:• Speed of the attacks to catch defense

unbalanced and disorganized• Options ahead of the ball• Movements to attack space & receive

Begin with 3 Red Defenders and GK staying in their designated 1/3 with 1 Red Defender in middle 1/3. Blues can move anywhere and always start with possession of the ball on the end line of the middle 1/3.

TaskBlues: Maintain possession and create opportunities to attack large goal through passing, dribbling, exploiting space and quick combinations.

Reds: Attempt to defend and force Attackers away from goal while remaining patient and looking for opportunities to regain ball and counter attack the two small goals if possession is won.

ProgressionDefenders make recovery runs & then progress to free play.Introduce offside line on edge of final third so that Defenders can adopt a high press and pose new problems for the Attackers to solve.

50x50 with large goal going to 2 small goals. Divide area in half to reference final and middle thirds on a 9v9 pitch. 4 Attackers (Blue) attempt to score in large goal against 5 x Defenders (4 Reds and 1 GK). If Reds regain possession they score in either of the two small goals as quickly as possible.

Key Coaching Points…Attacking• Encourage and teach players to play out of the back

• Encourage players to take opponents on 1v1

• Create situations where players can attack individually and as a unit

• Your session design should facilitate attacking overloads, combination play, counter attacking and switching the point of attack

• Give the players reference points on the pitch to develop the skills to exploit and create space in attack (when you remove the lines/markers the players will recognize where they may have to move to in relation to position of the ball so that they can attack successfully)

• Encourage improvisation and creativity and normalize errors. Keep encouraging players as they need to feel comfortable and confident enough to attempt new things

• Within any attacking activities, make sure there are goal scoring opportunities

Page 23: PowerPoint Presentation - AYSO Corvallis Socceragainst; 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4. • If defending team successfully defend, or attacking team score, they get following points; 1v1 = 1

Summary• Technical development is priority (polish skills and apply in game-like situations)

• Demonstrate where possible

• Let the game teach (decision-making and understanding)

• Teach Principles of Play

• Use guided questions to help players think and learn for themselves

• Teach players to recognize visual cues

• Encourage individual practice at home

• Emphasize process in addition to results (Development vs. Winning)

• Always with PIE!

• Fun but challenging!

• Inspire!
