10S: LUCA, the Last Universal Common Ancestor (Peterson, Sloboda)
Bio 11The Science of Life
Biology, like all of science, is a problem-solving endeavor. This course introduces students to a major problem in biology, and considers it from many different perspectives, viewpoints and biological levels of organization. Along the way, students are
exposed to many of the major concepts in biology, from molecules to ecosystems. Each offering will address a different major
problem.Open to all students. Dist: SCI.
Bio 11 is a required prerequisite for ALL Foundation Courses-no exceptions
Foundation Courses
Bio 12 Cell Structure & Function
Bio 13 Gene Expression & Inheritance
Bio 14 Physiology
Bio 15 Genetic Variation and Evolution
Bio 16 Ecology
Area of Concentration
In consultation with your Biology Advisor, construct your Area of Concentration
by selecting six additional courses that interest you
May count up to two advanced courses from other departments toward the Biology major that are appropriate for your area of
concentration

“Special” rules for ‘07, ‘08, and ‘09
For the classes of ’08 and ’09:If you have taken Bio 14 (Ecology), Bio 15 (Cell Biology), Bio 16 (Genetics), Bio 2 (Human Biology), Bio 4 (Genes and Society), or Bio 6 (Dinosaurs) by the end of Spring 06 you do not need to take Bio11 as a prerequisite for foundation courses or to graduate with the new major. If you have not taken any course in the Biology Department by the Spring 06, you need to begin with Bio11. To graduate a Biology major, you must take ten courses, thus if you do not take Bio 11, you must substitute a Foundation or Advanced Course.
For the class of ’07:You are exempt from the Bio11 requirement as a prerequisite for foundation courses or for the new major, but you must take ten courses.
If you have any questions, please ask your Biology faculty advisor.
What about Research Opportunities?
Formal Opportunities:•WISP (1st year women)•Howard Hughes Fellowship Program (sophomores)•http://www.dartmouth.edu/~hhmi/index.html
•Presidential Scholars (juniors)•Independent Study (juniors, seniors)•Honors Research (seniors)
Less formal Opportunities:•Work-study•Paid research intern•Volunteer
How do I find out about research labs?
Biology department website: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~biology/
Med School departments: http://dms.dartmouth.edu/research/basic.shtml
•Biochemistry•Genetics•Microbiology and Immunology•Pharmacology and Toxicology•Physiology
If you read about something that sounds interesting to you, contact the professor by blitz to find out more and inquire about
undergraduate research opportunities
Most faculty LOVE to talk about their research!
Independent Study / Honorsfor Biology Majors
Bio 95-97 research in Med School labs is possible(but requires a Biology Faculty sponsor)
Bio 95 - Independent StudyBio 96 - Independent StudyBio 97 - Honors Research
Frequently Asked Questions
What do I get for AP credit in Biology?Unspecified Course Credit (Bio 000)
No credit toward Biology major or minor
If I want to take a Biology course this Fall, what are my options?
Bio 1110: Life Through Compound Eyes (Berger, Ayres)
10A: Cooperation & Conflict in Biological Systems (Bickel, Calsbeek)(counts toward Biology major, prerequisite for all Foundation Courses)
Bio 211: Human Biology (Witters)
does NOT count toward Biology major or as prerequisite for Foundation Courses
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to take the Foundation Courses in a specific order? No
Bio 12-16 may be taken in ANY order
Do I need to take ALL three Foundation Courses BEFORE
starting the courses for my area of concentration? No
However, when planning your schedule,be aware that each intermediate course requires at least one Foundation Course as a prerequisite
Advanced Courses require at least one one intermediate course as a prerequisite
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I learn about pre-med courses and requirements?www.dartmouth.edu/~nss, (Nathan Smith Society)
