What is Racism?

✤ Offensive or aggressive behaviour to members of another race stemming from such a belief.

Racism can be direct or indirect.

✤ Direct - when someone is treated less fairly than someone else because of their race. For example if a school will not hire a staff member because of his or her race or ethnicity.

✤ Indirect - when a policy or rule treats everyone in the same way, but has an unfair effect on people of a particular race. For example, a rule that says that students may not wear anything on their heads could result in discrimination against other students whose religions require headwear.

Facts on Racial Discrimination

✤ Last year, the United States sentencing commission released a report showing that African American men’s prison sentences were on average 20% longer than white men’s prison sentences when they were convicted of similar crimes.

✤ Black and White people use illegal drugs at almost identical rates. But black people are three times more likely to be arrested for drug possession.

Kara Walker

✤ Kara Walker is a contemporary African-American artist who explores race, gender, sexuality, violence and identity in her work.

✤ Her room-size silhouettes provoke strong feelings as she questions our assumptions about how skin colour defines anyone’s physical characteristics and behavior.

Ideas

We debated on changing famous racial situations, for example;

1. Black people at the front of the bus and white people at the back.

2. The enslavement of the black population (swapping the roles of race)

3. A white Martin Luther King in his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech.

4. Changing famous faces, for example, a white Barack Obama, a black Queen etc.

Whilst reviewing these ideas, we realised that these ideas may be hard to execute as we are limited to post production usage, for example, we would most likely need to use photoshop in order to have everyone on the bus in order of black and white.

IdeasFor our project, we have decided to look at Racism, here are some of the ideas that we have.

1. Using a white woman holding a black baby similar to the ‘United colours of Benetton’ campaign.

2. Using a projector to display words or images on the face of a model so that ethnicity is not visible.

3. Using everyday objects to symbolise diversity.

Ideas

✤ We then looked at portraying racism through the use of objects.

✤ This is a simple yet effective way to show racism and inequality through the use of colour which is engaging to the audience in order to express the issue.

✤ We would rather use colour than black and white as it would be more visually interesting.

Relating to Lectures✤ We are using colour and everyday objects to

represent race, the use of connotation shows the association to race rather than the literal appearance that we see.

✤ We believe that the use of colour will help show the inequality of race still creating a powerful impact.
