The Great DebatersThe Great Debaters

THE GREAT DEBATERS is inspired by the amazing story of Wiley College’s winning debate team of the early 1930s. Set against the backdrop of the Jim Crow South, THE GREAT DEBATERS chronicles the journey of the Wiley College debate team—coached by the passionate professor Melvin B. Tolson. It was Tolson’s recognition that the power of knowledge is the greatest advantage of all, which brought these students from underdogs to victors in a time when more than the odds were against them.!

I met Miss Dina Scrub one day, I give her such a buss [kiss]; And then she turn and slap my face, and make a mighty fuss. The other girls are going to fight, I told them wait a bit; I'd have them all, just one by one, as I thought fit. I whip the lion of the west, I eat the alligator; I put more water in my mouth, then boil ten loads of potatoes. The way they bake the hoe cake, Virginia never tire; They put the dough upon the foot, and stick them in the fire

◦ xThe Supreme Court began to overturn Jim Crow laws on lawful grounds in the Late 20th century.

◦ In one court case Buchanan vs. Warley(1917), the court held that a Kentucky law could not mandate a residential segregation. The Supreme Court in 1946, in case Irene Morgan vs. Virginia ruled segregation in public transportation to be non constitutional

◦ In a request of the commerce* clause of the Constitution. It was not until 1954 in Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka that the court held that separate facilities were naturally unequal in the area of public schools

◦ These overturned Jim Crow in other areas of society as well. These Decisions slowly dismantled the state-sponsored segregation forced by Jim Crow laws
