Powering a sustainable world A look at how Cavotec enables industry to operate more cleanly, without compromising efficiency.
Powering a sustainable worldA look at how Cavotec enables industryto operate more cleanly, without compromisingefficiency.
Ensuring a sustainable future
How do we reconcile human development with protecting the natural environment? At Cavotec, we believe the two are inseparable. Indeed, they drive one another.
Working closely with customers, industry bodies and government authorities, Cavotec develops innovative power, control and distribution systems that enable the Ports & Maritime, Airports, Mining & Tunnelling and General Industry sectors to operate efficiently and sustainably.
This booklet shows how Cavotec is supporting industry to improve productivity and to reduce environmental impact at diverse applications all around the world. We believe that innovative technologies and an open exchange of ideas will create a sustainable future for all.
Our objective:
A sustainable world
Ottonel Popesco, CEOCavotec SA
A word from the CEO
“ When people ask me what Cavotec is doing for the environment today, I refer them to our origins four decades ago. Then, as now, we focused on innovative technologies that reduce the environmental impact of industry. We do not claim to have all the answers, but we do provide solutions that make a difference – today and for the future.”
Our defining elementThe defining element of all our activities across thediverse sectors in which we operate is our approachto engineering: always looking ahead, constantlystriving to make industry safer, more efficient and moreenvironmentally sustainable for the long-term.

Ports & Maritime
Safe, efficient portsOur products in the Ports & Maritime sector include shore-to-ship power, automated
mooring, Panzerbelt cable protection, radio remote controls (RRCs), motorised cable
reels, cable chains and sliprings for Azipod ship propulsion systems
Our Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) systems enable vessels to switch off their
engines while docked and connect to shore side electricity. Services such as lighting,
heating, food preparation and cargo handling can be run directly from the port.
This reduces fuel consumption and improves air quality in ports and surrounding
communities. See the detailed breakdown to the left for an emissions comparison
between ships running their engines in port and using shore side electricity.
Ports across northern Europe, the US and Canada use our AMP systems. The first
such system was adopted in 1984 at the Port of Gothenburg on the west coast of
Sweden. Other major operators include the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long
Beach in the US.

Automated mooring – a step-change in port operations Our automated mooring technology, MoorMaster™, brings a vessel to port in seconds compared to up to an hour for conventional mooring techniques. This innovative solution completely eliminates the need for mooring ropes – making the whole operation safer and quicker.
MoorMaster™ uses hydraulics and vacuum pads to hold vessels in place more securely than mooring ropes. This means that ships and cranes do not have to reposition along the berth, thus reducing emissions and fuel costs while increasing port efficiency.
MoorMaster™ has performed more than 40,000 mooring operations to date, at container, Ro/Ro, bulk handling and lock applications around the world.
Docking ships with MoorMaster™ takes on

12 seconds

“ The time saved in mooring and releasing vessels using MoorMaster™ and its ability to maintain continuous safe loading operations has improved vessel turn around efficiency in Port Hedland by up to 2.5 hours.”
– Port Hedland Port Authority and Pinc Group WA Engineering Excellence Awards submission
Airports
Clean, functional airports
Our GSE systems save an average of
300 litres of jet fuel per hour
Working closely with airports, airlines and industry authorities, we help airports improve operational efficiency and minimise environmental impact. Many of our systems enable aircraft to switch off their engines sooner at the gate. This cuts fuel costs and reduces emissions.
Our comprehensive range of Ground Support Equipment (GSE) quickly and easily supplies aircraft with fuel, water, power and pre-conditioned air. Emerging from pit and tunnel systems embedded under the apron or in hangars, our systems reduce traffic around aircraft and reduce the use of diesel-driven equipment.
Cavotec’s PCAir system supplies pre-conditioned air to aircraft without using polluting diesel generators. Our Airports unit also manufactures aircraft connectors and tow bars, cable coilers and caddies.

“ Airlines, together with manufacturers and governments, must step up their investments in new technology. It has been the main driver of progress so far and it has the greatest potential for future progress.”
– Philippe Rochat, former Director Aviation EnvironmentInternational Air Transport Association (IATA)
Mining & Tunnelling
Powering the mining and tunnelling sectorsWhile our ultimate goal may be to reduce reliance on non-renewable resources, we can, in the meantime, extract these materials in ways that are efficient and that minimise environmental impact.
Cavotec’s specially designed hose reels perform key functions in the mining and tunnelling industries. We supply major manufacturers, such as Atlas Copco and Sandvik, with a broad range of motorised cable reels and hoses.
Cavotec also supplies the Mining & Tunnelling sector with motorised and spring driven cable reels, power cables, connectors and radio remote control units.

“ Through its commitment to just-in-time delivery, Cavotec enables us to streamline our supply chain management and maximise our operational efficiencies.”
– Hans Rimmerfors, Vice President Purchasing Atlas Copco Underground Excavation
General Industry
Productivity gains for diverse applicationsCavotec’s products and services for the General Industry sector are enormously diverse, but they all share a common characteristic: technology that enables industry to operate more efficiently and more sustainably.
Around the globe, in a wide variety of applications, we support our customers increase the efficiency with which electrical power, minerals and fluids are managed and transported.
We continue to pioneer the use of cable reels, cable chains, slipring columns, power connectors and radio remote controls in industries as diverse as manufacturing, transport and even cultural institutions, such as theatres and concert halls.
