WELCOME
welcome to the Pre Show Guide for POWeR-geN india & Central Asia 2011 and our two exciting launch events Renewable energy World india and HydroVision india.
with its population growing at a phenomenal rate (India is on track to overtake China as the world’s most populous country within the next 30 years) and continuing strong economic growth (its GDP is expected to grow at an annual rate of 8 per cent) India’s need for electricity has never been greater.
The country is now more than halfway through its 11th Five-Year Plan. Although the target of adding around 78 000 Mw of new capacity by 2012 is not expected to be met by the end of the current plan India will have added more capacity than in all previous Five-Year Plans combined.
The addition capacity target of the 12th Five-Year Plan has yet to be officially announced but the expectation is that it will be in the region of 100 Gw.
Undoubtedly challenges still exist for the Indian power sector, not least the gap between peak electricity demand and production, which currently stands at around 12 per cent, and the fact that approximately 400 million of its population still do not have access to electricity.
India relies heavily on fossil fuels, in particular coal, for its electricity production and will do so for the foreseeable future. however, the Government of India wants to encourage the replacement of old inefficient subcritical units with high efficiency supercritical ones, and is doing so with initiatives such as the Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPP).
India is also keen to diversify its generation mix, encouraging the greater development of low-carbon resources such as nuclear, hydropower and renewable energy.
India is ranked fifth in the world in terms of exploitable hydropower potential (150 000 Mw), but only 20 per cent of this potential has been developed to-date. The greater development of this sector is a key goal for the Government of India, and it has put policy incentives in place to support it. The aim is to increase hydropower’s share of national power production from 26 per cent to 40 per cent.
The government also has ambitious plans to place renewable energy at the heart of its new clean energy infrastructure. India’s Solar Mission, for example, aims to see solar power achieve grid parity with the cheapest coal-fired capacity by 2030, and plans to install at least 20 Gw of solar thermal and photovoltaic capacity by 2022.
It is also planning to double India’s installed wind capacity by 2022, and ensure this southeast nation emerges as an important manufacturing base for the global wind industry.
POWeR-geN india & Central Asia, together with its two new co-located events Renewable energy World india and HydroVision india, now truly reflects the changing face of one the world’s most exciting electric power markets, India.
If you want to find out about the latest technologies and product developments in the field of fossil fuels, nuclear, hydro or renewables, or to explore the many investment opportunities that exist, look no further than POWeR-geN india & Central Asia, Renewable energy World india and HydroVision india; this year’s must attend events.
